This is the penultimate weekly newsletter of 2024. As the year draws to a close, we reflect on all that happened in 2024; the things that were difficult, and the things for which we are grateful.

One of the things I am most grateful for is you. Thank you for supporting the work I do.

I often joke that the reason I love reading for people is that I long to know what is going on in people’s lives. I am intensely curious, but I am not a malicious gossip. I want to know what is going on because I want good things for everyone. The process of working with tarot can provide a lot of information that leads us to good things. And the relationships we develop with our tarot friends, students, teachers, readers, and clients are so valuable.

In preparing for Christmas, I happened to hear the old song, “Silver and Gold,” from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. That made me think of a Girl Scout song, that also mentions silver and gold. The lyrics are simple. “Make new friends but keep the old. One is silver and the other gold.”

That ties into the theme of that Christmas song by the same name. The people we care about are the most precious gifts in our lives.

Sometimes we need to set boundaries, and that can be difficult. Sometimes we lose loved ones and that can be devastating. Our long-term friends and family members are our story-keepers. When we lose them, we lose a part of ourselves. Yet the value they bring into our lives makes the risk of difficulty and loss acceptable.

Often during the holidays we focus on the recipes, the gifts, the wardrobe, and the decorations. All those things can be marvelous. Yet, the thing that makes this time of year so special is that we take time to gather with one another, and to let our loved ones know how much we value them.

For those who are lonely or dealing with loss, this season can be a painful reminder of happier times or unfulfilled wishes. That is why I love the line from the Girl Scout song that reminds us to make new friends. Wonderful new people can come into our lives at any time, in any season, and at any age. They are always a gift when they do!

My family and I wish you and your family the happiest of holiday seasons, and a wonderful new year. This newsletter will continue throughout the holidays, and through StaarCon. The “Making Magic” column has now ended. After StaarCon, we will begin a new weekly column. What topic would you like to see us explore in 2025?

Your Seventy-Eight Friends

Many new tarot students are overwhelmed with the idea of learning seventy-eight cards. When they realize that each card can have many different meanings, they become even more discouraged. Here is what I tell them to make it easier.

Learning tarot is like making seventy-eight new friends. You won’t learn everything about them all at once. At first, you learn their names and what they look like. Then, over time, you get to know them. Each time you see them, you learn more about them. You create relationships with them over time.

If you allow your relationship with each tarot card to develop the same way friendships do, you will have much less frustration, and a lot more fun!

What we forget is the importance of friendship.   Social media has helped us stay in touch with so many people. Sometimes we are able to reacquaint ourselves with old friends. The comfort of breathing life into old friendships, and of making new friends, cannot be understated.   At the same time, it is important to have face time with the people we care about – to share a meal, to dance, to enjoy each other.   Friends help each other through hard times. Friends celebrate our good times with us. Friends help us understand ourselves. Friends remind us of why we are loveable.   Friends are the family we choose.   Midsummer Psychic Gallery It’s been a busy week! In addition to my readings by phone and Skype I was happy to give a Psychic Gallery at Pearl Rauberts’ in Loxahatchee. I really appreciate it when people take the time to attend my events, whether on line or in person. Time is a limited resource. It means a lot when you share that resource with me. A Friendship Tarot Reading Here is a simple two-card reading to help you understand a friendship. You can use tarot or any other card oracle. Simply pull one card that will represent you, and another to represent your friend. Lay them side by side. First, does each card picture a person? If so, are they looking at each other, looking in the same direction or looking away from each other? This will tell you about how you and your friend are relating to each other right now. Is one card stronger or more significant than the other? This might show you that one person is dominating the relationship. Do the cards complement each other in terms of colors and images? This many suggest how the two of you are similar, or how you bring out each other’s best qualities. You can interpret each card to show what each of you are bringing to the friendship. You could also look at the cards to indicate what each of you need from the friendship or how each of you feel about the friendship. This kind of relationship reading can be very helpful in strengthening our understanding and appreciation of each other. The Week in Review This week Christiana commented on the Paula Deen controversy on her Dark Forest Blog. On her personal blog, Tarot Trends, Christiana explored what it takes to be a great spiritual leader in Leadership, Service and Ego. On the Tarot Topics Community Blog, Christiana shared some marketing tips for metaphysical professionals. Also on the community blog, our own Joanne Matthew shared a poem about Litha, the Summer Solstice. Joanne is well-known for her spiritual poetry. We are so happy she shares her creativity with us on the Tarot Topics Community Blog. Our webinar was “The Four Elements and the Minor Arcana.” If missed it, or want to see it again, you can view it in archive. From Around the Web Eight times a year the Tarot Blog Hop members agree to write on the same topic and link their blogs together. This past week, for the summer solstice, the topic was "Circle Celebrations and Faery Fun." Sadly, Christiana’s busy schedule this week kept her from participating, but you can still see what twenty-three well-known tarotists had to say on the topic. Visit the Master List to find your first link, and continue on from there! Divining for Friends Long before I was a professional reader I loved gathering with a group of friends for an evening of divination. We would share food and read the cards and the I Ching for each other. I’ve been happy to learn that many people enjoy this same activity. Cards, tea leaves and pendulums are often a part of a great friends’ night in. Sharing the energy of spiritual exploration with people you enjoy is a marvelous thing. The discovery that comes from divination is made more exciting when surrounded by the people that matter to you. There are some things to consider when you divine with friends. It is good to use a number of different tools. This is an opportunity to compare and contrast different oracles and see which ones really resonate for you. It is best to keep things lighthearted, and to focus on growth and options rather than doom-and-gloom predictions. As with all readings, pay attention to the questions you ask. Proactive questions, such as “What do I need to do to get a new job?” are better than predictive questions such as “Will I get a new job?” Spiritual questions, such as “What does the Universe want me to know?” will open you to the greatest wisdom. If you are serious about learning to divine, reading for friends offers you a striking opportunity to really see how your tools work for you. You know your friends, so you will see how their personalities reflect in divination.  You will be around to see how your predictions manifest. Many people tell me that they use oracles such as tarot, but “just for fun.” They say it in an embarrassed way, like a confession. They are often surprised by my answer. “Great!” I tell them. “It’s supposed to be fun!” What’s up at the Psychic Café? Christiana’s Psychic Café is a weekly webcast on the Para Encounters Network. Traditionally this is a card that can predict or describe a love relationship. It can also refer to a great partnership in business. When it comes to romantic love, we know we can never find a perfect person. But we can find a perfect match. The Two of Cups is the card of perfect love and perfect partnership. The Two of Cups can refer to a wonderful friendship. That this card was drawn at random for our friendship-themed newsletter is evidence of tarot’s genius. When you see the Two of Cups it may be time to remember the healing power of love in all its forms. You may be directed to pay special attention to the partnerships in your life. You may be making a wonderful new partnership. The Two of Cups also reminds you to be a great partner to yourself, and to seek emotional balance in all ways.
