The Power of Great Need
Training in spiritual practices and traditions is helpful and good. Yet, in a time of great need, our love, hope, and desires are powerful tools.
I had a conversation with a friend this week which got me thinking about the power of prayer and energy work in a specific context I hadn’t before considered.
Many of my friends and colleagues are, like me, energy workers, diviners, and clergy. That is, we are people who have been trained, and who have studied, to work effectively with spiritual energy. We have proven and verifiable results. Many of us have made it our life’s work, and our career, to share and teach this knowledge, and these techniques.
The question that came up in the conversation with my friend is this. Can we assume that the prayers and healing energy of trained mystics are more effective than the prayers and energy of those who are not as trained and experienced?
At first glance, the answer is a resounding yes. As with all things, training and practice makes a difference. This is why it is valuable to study and learn specific techniques and traditions of energy healing, divination, and manifestation.
Yet, there is another factor we must consider, and that the power that is conferred by great need and great love.
What energy is more powerful than a child praying for the well-being of their parents, or parents praying for the protection of their children?
What training can equal the weight of need that comes from a person in a dire situation?
Haven’t we all had at least one desperate experience where we needed an important prayer answered, a bit of luck, a miracle to save us from a great difficulty?
Very often, help comes at the last minute. Very often, that help is sped along to us on the wings of prayer, hope and visualization.
The same is true of the information that comes from divination. I have often seen tarot and other tools give amazing help to beginning students. These seekers were able to tap into helpful information in a time of need, without the benefit of much training or experience.
Training, study, and practice are helpful, and necessary. Seeking help from trained professionals is wise.
Yet, never doubt the miracles that can be available to each one of us in the times of our greatest need. And never doubt that the greater the need is, the greater the power we have to create those miracles.

Cards for Your Consideration
One tarot card that often conveys a sense of great need is the Five of Pentacles. Very often this card can indicate a sense of poverty, or a fear of poverty. I often see it as the card of the “missed opportunity”.
Typically, the Five of Pentacles is a card that people prefer would not appear in their readings.
Over the years, though, I have noticed that when it appears, its message is usually not as dismal as one might think.
We often miss opportunities because we don’t see them, or look for them, or recognize them as such.
When I see the Five of Pentacles, it often appears for a client who thinks they have missed the boat. Yet, the reading confirms that there are many opportunities still available to them, if they will only look.
Sometimes they see the opportunities but are afraid to pursue them.
American businessman Henry J. Kaiser famously said that “trouble is only opportunity in work clothes”.
The next time you see the Five of Pentacles, rather than feeling dismay or worry, see it as the possibility of opportunities coming your way. These opportunities may not be easy to see or to pursue, but are likely to be worthwhile in the end.

Activate an Omen
We all look for signs from the Universe. Here is a way to make sure we receive them.
Most of us look for omens around us, either consciously or unconsciously. It might be a song on the radio, or a wild animal that catches our attention. We find messages from the Universe in these omens. We see them as signs of confirmation and validation, warnings, or messages from angels and loved ones in spirit.
I was speaking with a friend recently who told me how she makes a deal with the Universe in order to receive a particular message. I thought this was a brilliant idea, so I wanted to share it with you.
In the cartomancy world, we ‘activate’ specific cards to mean certain things. What my friend does is to activate a symbol to serve as a positive omen regarding a specific aspect of her life.
Here’s how you can do this.
If you are working toward, or waiting for, a specific thing to happen in your life, like a great job or a great relationship, find an item in nature that is not plentiful, but that could possibly appear in the world around you. For example, you might choose a green feather, or a blue butterfly. Tell the Universe that when you are about to find, or have found, the thing you are waiting for in your life, it must show you this symbol in a way that is unmistakable.
I have named this process ‘activating an omen’.
I think this process is helpful for three reasons. First, when you activate the omen, you are also affirming to yourself and to the Universe that you are seeking, and expecting, something wonderful in your life. The very act of doing this will bring you closer to your goal.
The second reason this is helpful is that it keeps you focused on achieving your goal.
The third reason is that, when you do achieve your goal and receive your omen, you will move forward in confidence. You will be confident that you are on the right path, and confident that the Universe is working with you as a co-creator in helping you reach your goals. You will know that the Universe listens to you, and is communicating directly with you.

Activate a Tarot Card
To activate a tarot card is to create an agreement between yourself, the Universe, and your cards that a specific card will have a specific meaning beyond its usual meaning.
You might activate a card for one certain reading only. Or, you might activate a card to symbolize something special and specific over time.
Sometimes it seems that a card will activate itself by appearing in readings to mean a specific non-traditional thing time and time again.
For example, when I was living in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania and wanting to move to Florida, the Sun would come up in ways that made me think of this goal. It felt like this card was being activated to symbolize my move to Florida. Even to this day, when I see the Sun come up in a reading for someone, it will sometimes discuss a Florida vacation or relocation.
If you are performing a reading about a specific topic, you might choose a card cognitively, and activate that card to give a positive answer to your question, should it appear in the reading. For example, you might say that if the Three of Pentacles appears in this reading, that will be a sure sign that I should take this job offer.

Cards for Your Consideration
When I think about working directly with Universal energies to achieve goals and to receive omens, the card I think of first is Major Arcana 1, the Magician. This is for a number of reasons.
First, it’s in the name. The Magician does magic! The Magician harnesses the power of earth and heaven to help him on his journey.
Keywords for the Magician include tools, skills and abilities. This card affirms that we have what we need to manifest what we want, in mundane ways as well as magical ones.
The Magician is an initiate. He is beginning his journey and learning to wield his power. He asks us to do the same.

What We Loved as Kids
We live most authentically when we remember what we loved when we were young.
Our childhood experiences, both good and bad, influence our adult lives in so many ways. I often say that most of us spend most of our lives recovering from the first twenty years.
Yet, regardless of the real toll that childhood trauma takes, most of us are lucky enough to have at least a few pleasant childhood memories.
At different times in our adult lives, we find ourselves at a crossroad, wondering what we should do, or what we should choose. Sometimes the question is career direction. Sometimes the question is about engaging in a new hobby. Sometimes it’s about starting a new chapter in life.
One good way to figure out the best way to work, heal, have fun, or nurture growth is to consider something that we loved to do as a child.
If you are looking for a change, or wondering what your next step should be, ask yourself these questions.
What is a favorite childhood memory?
What did I enjoy doing as a child?
What did I feel most proud of when I was young?
When I was young, what did I want to be as an adult?
Where was I happiest when I was a child?
Very often, this sort of questioning, and a journey down memory lane, can help remind us who we are, at core. Divination and meditation can be important tools in this process.
When we remember who we were as children, we discover forgotten parts of who we are now.
The things that made us happy when we were young are still things that can make us happy now, no matter how old we have become.
The closer our adult selves can be to our childhood selves, the more we can be authentic in our adult lives.

Tarot for the Inner Child
Tarot is such a good tool for connecting with, and healing, your inner child. Try shuffling your cards and asking, “What does my inner child want to tell me?”
Pull a single card, or maybe even a few cards.
Then, try asking a question like, “What does my inner child want me to do?” Pull a card, or a few, and see what thoughts or actions the cards inspire.
If your inner child is feeling wounded, you can ask, “What can I do to heal or nurture my inner child?”
You will find that all parts of yourself, from your higher self to your mundane self to your inner critic, inner artist, and inner child can speak through your cards. You can even let the different parts of yourself speak to each other, by asking questions like, “What does my higher self want to say to my inner child?”

Cards for Your Consideration
There are three tarot cards that often remind me of nurturing the inner child and connecting with our childhood joys. The first and most obvious is the Fool. Often in a reading the Fool will remind us to be playful, to nurture the inner child, and to approach the world with child-like wonder.
The Sun is also a card that can convey a sense of child-like confidence and happiness.
In the Minor Arcana, the Six of Cups is associated with a return to childhood, happy memories and reminiscence.
When you see these cards in a reading it may be a sign to connect with your inner child, and to seek out the things that brought you joy when you were young.

Waiter! There is a Problem with My Order!
Life doesn't always serve us what we want, but it always serves us.
We spiritual folk often reference the Law of Attraction and the power of prayer as a way that we can speak what we want into being. There is real truth in the idea that we can state our needs and desires and become co-creators with the Universe in achieving them.
Some people even call it ‘putting in an order with the Universe.’ Yet, the Universe isn’t Santa, or a genie, or even Amazon Prime. My mother used to say that God answers all prayers, but sometimes the answer is ‘no’.
When we clearly visualize, ask for, and work for our goals, they become easier to attain. There is no doubting this spiritual truth. Sometimes, though, it can feel that we are at the restaurant of life, and all our friends have gotten their orders, and our plate is still empty. Other times it feels that we ordered a fine French meal and ended up with a greasy burger.
Why is that that we sometimes feel that what we received is not what we ordered, or that everyone else has received something that we have yet to attain?
No matter how positive and prayerful we are, sometimes things don’t go the way we want.
Some people are quick to think that they are being punished by Higher Power or paying off some karmic debt from an evil prior life. I think the likely truth is far less nefarious.
Creative visualization, prayer and the Law of Attraction help us to create possibilities and achieve goals. Yet, there are other powers at play. Sometimes we just need to be patient. Our order will come in the right time, not in the time we specify. Sometimes the Universe seems to have a different lesson for us, or another way for us to serve a greater purpose.
Prayer, visualization and the Law of Attraction are only pieces of the energy that creates our lives.
There is no way to get the kitchen in the restaurant of life to bring us our order more quickly. If we don’t like what we get, we can’t send it back and order something else.
Life requires us to be patience, proactive and prayerful, all at the same time.
We must be patient to wait for the opportunities we are working to manifest.
We must be patient with the things in life that are beyond our control.
We must be proactive in doing the best we can with what we have.
We must be proactive in working to create what we want, even if we have been disappointed in the past.
We must be prayerful, even when are prayers are not fully answered.
And, even when our prayers are not answered, we must look to find the gifts in whatever the Universe has brought to our table. In time, we can always discover those gifts if we are willing to see them.

Tarot for the Lemons of Life
We all know the expression ‘when life gives you lemons, make lemonade’. Tarot is a great tool to help us figure out how to do that.
Tarot can also warn us when things might not go with way we had hoped.
The way to deal with an unfortunate prediction is the same as the way to deal with an unfortunate situation. We simply ask questions to help us prepare, learn, process and mitigate.
What sort of questions help us handle disappointment and difficulty? Here are some ideas.
What can I learn from this?
How do I prepare for this?
What gift will come out of this?
How can I help others get through this?
What can I do to heal from this?
What can I do to make this better?

Cards for Your Consideration
The Four of Cups is the perfect card to describe that feeling of having to make do with something which is different from what you wanted or expected.
Very often in a reading this card can speak of limited options, ambivalence, or boredom.
We can also see an attitude reflected in this card. It may be that the options being offered are adequate, and the character in the card is behaving like a spoiled child, wishing for strawberry ice cream when all that is available is vanilla.
When this card appears, it may suggest taking advantage of the best option possible. It may suggest that it is time to wait for something better. It may also tell you to check your attitude.
This card can serve as a reminder that we need to stay positive in order to make the best of whatever the situation happens to be. At the same time, it may be appropriate to hold space and create healing for disappointment.
