The Language of Dreams

Our dreams contain a great deal of wisdom that can help us heal, help us plan, and help us solve problems.

Mystical door in the clouds

The word ‘dream’ can have two different meanings either as a noun or a verb. A dream can be what happens in our mind when we sleep. A dream can also be a cherished aspiration.

The dreams I want to discuss are the ones that happen when we sleep.

Humans spend a third of their lives asleep. it makes sense that what happens in our sleep has great value, not just for our bodies, but for the mind and spirit.

We have different types of dreams. Some are pleasant, and some can be unpleasant. Some dreams may obviously be created by something we are experiencing physically. Some dreams seem to be a way of processing the day’s events. Some dreams are recurring and may hold a key to healing long-term trauma, worries, or upsets. Some dreams offer solutions to problems. Some dreams are predictive. Some dreams may include communication from loved ones in spirit.

People who do not remember their dreams can try techniques to allow their dreams into their waking memory. Sometimes this can be as simple as setting that intention before going to sleep.

Setting an intention for your dreams can be a helpful technique in general. If you have a particular problem, you might set your intention to dream your solution. If you want a message from a loved one in spirit you can ask them to enter your dreams.

Another helpful dreamwork practice is to remember your dreams and interpret them. In our dreams, our subconscious mind and conscious mind can work with our higher self and our spiritual guides to send us the signs and symbols we need to see.

Sometimes the symbols of our dreams are universal. This means that we all dream of similar things. Some of the symbols of our dreams are unique to individuals, and deeply personal.

This is why dream interpretation must move beyond simply looking up universal symbols in a book.

The language of dreams is vast, and the wisdom that can be found in our dreams is significant.

The process of dream interpretation can be psychological, intuitive, or divinatory. We each must find a way to decipher the language of our dreams to find the wisdom our dreams may hold for us.

Tarot and Dreams

There are a few ways you can incorporate tarot into your dreamwork. One of the most interesting ways is to sleep with your deck in its pouch under your pillow for a few nights. The cards will influence your dreams!

Of course, there are many techniques for using tarot to interpret dreams.

Sometimes specific cards in tarot readings will tell us to pay attention to our dreams. A few of these cards are the Moon, the High Priestess, the Nine of Swords, and the Seven of Cups.

Occasionally you might dream of a tarot card. When that happens you can consider why that card was shown to you in your dream, and what it means to you.

Guidance on the Journey

A dream journal, or a simple notebook and pen on your bedside table, can be the best tool for dreamwork.

Before you go to sleep write down your intention to remember your dreams.

If you need guidance on a specific issue, write your question. This way, your dreams become a type of divination.

If you want to hear from someone in spirit, write a note to them.

When you awaken, write down everything you can remember about your dreams. Do not worry if they make sense while you are writing them down. Do try to write down every detail, including  colors, feelings, and environment.

Later, come back to what you have written and try to find the wisdom in your dreams.

Was Your Intuition Wrong?

Your intuition is never wrong. Yet, you might confuse other thoughts and feelings with the spiritual direction of intuition.

A graphic of a woman's face.

I had an interesting conversation recently. My friend had experienced a strong feeling that something specific was going to happen, but that thing did not happen. “My intuition was wrong,” she said.

That struck me.

We always tell people to listen to your intuition. We say that your intuition will never let you down. We say that you should always trust your intuition. Is it possible that your intuition could be wrong?

After a few moments of thought, I concluded something I think is an important truth.

“Your intuition was not wrong,” I said to my friend. “You failed to correctly identify the voice of intuition.”

This is the thing we metaphysical teachers so often fail to teach and forget to emphasize.

If the voice of intuition is an important guide, what does that voice sound like? How can we distinguish the voice of intuition from the voice of desire or the voice of fear?

Intuition is not the logical voice, nor the anxious voice, nor the hopeful voice. Intuition cannot be used for bias confirmation. Intuition does not care about cultural context.

Usually, when we speak casually of intuition, it is because of a specific type of experience we all have. It goes like this. You have a strong feeling about something but dismiss it as silly, or unimportant. Then, your feeling turns out to be correct. You kick yourself because you should have listened to that feeling. That conversation always ends with the admonition that you should always listen to your intuition. That conversation does not usually dive in to ask the important questions.

When we have a feeling that was confirmed to be a fact, we need to ask ourselves a few things.

What were the specific sensations that accompanied that feeling? What else was going on when we had that feeling?

Just as we go to school to become intellectually strong and we go to the gym to become physically strong, we need to exercise our intuition. We do that by figuring out what the truth feels like, and what the voice of our intuition sounds like.

We can only trust our intuition when we learn to identify intuition, and separate intuition from all the other thoughts and feelings swirling around in the mind and heart.

Three Ways to Use Intuition in a Tarot Reading

Intuition is involved in every aspect of tarot reading, from the deck you choose to the number of times you shuffle, to the questions you ask.

When interpreting cards, intuition can work hand in hand with your interpretation skills to provide an accurate and insightful reading. Try these three techniques to help integrate intuition into an interpretative reading.

Every tarot card has multiple classic keywords and interpretations. Use your intuition to discover which keywords and interpretations are most appropriate in the reading.

A tarot reading is not simply a series of card descriptions, keywords, and interpretations. Use your intuition to extrapolate information that specifically relates to the situation at hand.

When you look at a tarot spread, intuit which cards feel most important. Think about why this card might be important to the story. When you look at a tarot card, see if your eyes are drawn to a particular aspect of the scene. What might that particular image have to say to you?

Guidance on the Journey

There are two specific Major Arcana cards in tarot that are most often associated with intuition. Those two cards are the High Priestess and the Moon. Here is how we see intuition in each of them.

The High Priestess travels into the subconscious, and beyond the veil into other worlds. Her spiritual journeying allows her to see what others cannot. The High Priestess asks us to look within and beyond, as she does, to find our truth.

The Moon reminds us that in the moonlight things look different than they do in daylight. We must use our intuition to avoid missteps and pitfalls as we make our way through the dark.

When either or both cards appear in a reading, they may be a signal to look deeper, and to find the truths that are hidden. They may tell you to develop your psychic senses, and to trust your intuition.

Yet, both cards may, in a reading, offer more mundane information as well. The High Priestess can be about secrecy, silence, or perfection. The High Priestess may speak specifically of a woman, or attitudes regarding a woman, or women. The Moon may warn you of the treachery of a hidden enemy.

Sometimes readers memorize a particular meaning of a card and look no further when that card appears. For both the Moon and the High Priestess, that obvious meaning is often about intuition. While that may be a perfect interpretation in some readings, in others, you will need to use your own intuition to look deeper to find a more specific and helpful meaning.

Opportunities for Joy

We need to be present for all our feelings. Even in difficult times, there are always opportunities for moments of joy. Those moments bring balance and perspective.

Smiling woman outside with open arms.

As a tarot professional I am present for people’s feelings. One of the great benefits of having a good tarot reading is that it offers an opportunity to examine feelings, and to find strategies to cope, and to heal.

The cards will reflect all the conflicting, overwhelming, and underlying emotions. A good reader will present that tangle of feelings in a way that is easy to accept and understand.

I believe in the power of positive thinking. I also believe in the importance of holding space for every feeling without shame. Life can be full of grief, disappointment, and fear, just as it can be full of happiness, satisfaction, and courage.

One thing that I have noticed is that joy can be present anywhere, and at any time. Even in grief, there can be single moments of delight.

While we are coping with difficulty, those moments of joy are essential. Those moments of joy give us balance and hope. As we heal, we begin to experience moments of grief interspersed in our ongoing happiness. When we are deeply in grief, we have moments of joy interspersed in our ongoing sadness.

Those moments of joy make a good day better. Moments of joy make a hard day tolerable. Moments of joy remind us that things may not be as dark as they appear.

Opportunities for joy are common. A pleasant day, a well-loved song, a funny joke, a conversation with a friend, or a smile from a stranger are but a few of the opportunities for joy that might appear in any given day.

I see this as an example of how the mundane and the spiritual are part of the same whole. Something as mundane as a funny meme or a tree in bloom might give me a moment of spiritual delight. The joy I feel in that moment gives me perspective and strength.

When we are open to opportunities for joy, we find moments that give us balance, and foster our healing and spiritual connection.

Tarot Questions to Cultivate Joy

What questions can we ask of the cards to help us find our joy? Here are some ideas.

How can I find creative inspiration?

What is something I must release to feel more joy?

What is something I must remember about myself that will help me feel more joyful?

What is something I am grateful for?

What is an activity I could do that would help me feel joyful?

What joyful message does Spirit have for me?

From Around the Web

This week I would like to highlight some of my favorite helpful books and authors. These are books I often recommend to people on their search for personal healing and joy.

Mark Wolynn wrote a fascinating book on inherited family trauma called It Didn’t Start With You.

When I was nineteen years old my grandmother sent me a book that was formative for me. The book is called The Gentle Art of Verbal Self-Defense. The author, Suzette Haden Elgin, has since created new books that supplement the original work which I found so helpful in my youth and continue to utilize.

It is very likely that you have heard of The Four Agreements. Visit the website of the author, don Miguel Ruiz, for some great wisdom on your journey to personal freedom.

Two women reading tarot cards.

Guidance on the Journey

One of the reasons some people fear getting tarot readings, and some talented tarot students fear giving readings, is the worry that the cards might reveal disturbing news, or unwelcome answers.

Sometimes people fear reading for themselves for the same reason.

Whether you are a perspective client, reader, or simply a seeker with some questions and a deck of cards, my guidance to you is the same.

The cards can help us see truth, and truth is always helpful. However, truth is not always welcome. When the reading is over, we want to walk away with less dread and more joy. There are many techniques to help that happen. Yet, there is one simple thing for every reader, querent, and practitioner to consider. This one simple thing can help each tarot reading bring joy rather than disappointment, even when the cards reveal outcomes that are not what was expected or desired.

In my opinion, tarot becomes much less helpful when we use it only to answer a simple burning question, rather than to perform a full reading.

There are settings, such as classes, galleries, and livestream performances, where a simple burning question is all that time will allow. Tarotists and tarot clients need to know that answering a single question is only the beginning of what we can do with tarot. Answering a simple question should not be confused with an actual tarot reading.

In an in-depth reading we can answer many questions. When the answer to a question is disappointing, we can ask further questions to bring clarity, healing, and a new focus.

When we approach a tarot reading in this way, we will always leave the tarot table with some hope, joy, and direction, even if we did not get the answers we wanted.

Spring Cleaning

As we plan seeds for spring, we take time to remove what no longer serves us.

Hands holding blossoms on water

This is the first week of Spring! No matter your favorite season or your geographical locale, the arrival of spring brings excitement and renewal for all.

We associate spring with new projects, new ideas, fertility, and growth. Spring is the time that the earth is renewed, and with that we find personal renewal as well.

It struck me that the tradition of spring cleaning seems different than the energy of planting, sprouting, and hatching which we often associate with springtime.

I did some research to find out where the tradition of spring cleaning originated. It turns out that spring cleaning is thousands of years old, and originated independently in several cultures around the world, including Iranian, Chinese, and Jewish.

In these cultural traditions, the cleaning of the house in springtime is spiritual and energetic as well as physical. Spring is the time to remove any bad luck or negative energy that has accumulated over the year.

This made me think of the gardening task of pruning. There are many plants that should not be pruned in spring. Yet, there are some that indeed thrive when pruned early in the year. In spring, some things need to be cut away to make room for new growth.

Perhaps the process of spring cleaning helps us ensure that the seeds we plant will blossom.

It makes sense, too, that as the earth is renewed, we would want our physical space to reflect that renewal.

Sometimes the cleaning we most need to do is not physical at all. Along with the concept of removing negative energy from our space is the concept of removing unhelpful things from our life. This is a sort of personal pruning where we cut away what no longer serves us. Perhaps it is time to break a bad habit, or to change the way we speak to ourselves. Perhaps we need to stop honoring outmoded beliefs that are keeping us from our success.

Now that spring is here, think about what you might want to prune away from your life in order to assure the success of the seeds you are planting. Let your personal spring cleaning support your new projects and ultimate success this year!

Tarot cards, crystals and sage

Guidance on the Journey

People often ask me to share ways of cleaning a tarot deck.

If the deck is physically dirty, you can wipe the cards with a slightly damp cloth.

The energetic cleansing of a tarot deck is something that needs to happen quite often. Nicely, many of the things we naturally do regularly with our cards serve to dispel any energy that has stuck to them from previous readings.

Some of these things are shuffling, striking the deck on the table, and sorting the cards in numeric order.

After a particularly difficult reading, or perhaps monthly, you might want to do a more intense cleansing. For this, there are a few things you can do.

Leave your deck on an inside windowsill during the night of a full moon.

Use incense or burning herbs to cleanse your deck with smoke. You can do this card by card, or with the whole deck.

Place quartz crystals on your deck overnight.

Use a selenite wand or a kyanite comb to remove the energy from the deck by waving the stone around the edges of the deck.

How do you know your deck needs deep cleansing? You might find that your readings feel flat or uninspired. You might find that you do not feel that you are enjoying your deck as much as usual. Generally, after you cleanse your deck your connection with the cards should return to normal very quickly.
