Interdependence

It is important to be independent. It is also important to understand the ways in which we are all connected.

Two women laying in the sand head to head with crystals between them

You have probably heard the phrase, “no man is an island”. This phrase comes from poet and clergyman John Donne. He spoke these words in a sermon in 1642. All these year later, this phrase still feels important.

No one can exist all alone. No matter how self-sufficient a person is, we all need each other. We rely on farmers to grow our food. We rely on doctors to help us stay healthy. We rely on friends and family to help us in countless ways.

It can be hard to ask for help when we need it. It can be equally hard to know how to help someone who is obviously in need. Sometimes we feel shame when we need to ask for help. Sometimes we feel resentful when others need our precious time and energy.

Whether professionally or personally, we all help each other. We all need each other.

Our interdependence is woven throughout friendships, family units, communities, nations, and worldwide.

When we can appreciate the number of hands it took to allow us to eat a meal, or make a phone call, we understand the web of which we are a part.

On a more personal level, there can be joy in assisting those in need, and joy in working together to achieve common goals.

It is important to be independent. It is also important to understand and celebrate our interdependence.

We are happy to announce that Mark Horn, author of Tarot and the Gates of Light: A Kabbalistic Path to Liberation, will be a presenter at StaarCon 2023.

Mark Horn may be the only person who has taught at both the Jewish Theological Seminary and the Readers’ Studio International Tarot Conference.

Mark has been a life-long activist in the post-Stonewall LGBTQ movement. At Congregation B’nai Jeshurun he created a liturgy for an LGBTQ Pride ritual dinner, the Stonewall Seder. This liturgy has been used and adapted by congregations in the U.S., Europe, and Australia.

Mark has studied Kabbalah with academic, religious, and practical teachers of Kabbalah in organizations ranging from the highly respected to the highly unorthodox.

I met Mark for the first time last summer at The Maters of Tarot conference at Omega Institute. Having already read his book, I immediately asked him to present at StaarCon 2023. I am so glad he agreed to share his wisdom with us.

StaarCon 2023 will be January 20-22. Mark your calendar now! Tickets will be available soon.

Two Cards to Understand a Relationship

There are many times we struggle with a relationship, be that a family member, a friend, or a co-worker. Yet, we may also believe that this person is in our life for a reason. We may be interconnected, practically or spiritually, with a need to help one another.

You can use a simple two-card spread to help understand the current purpose of such a relationship. One you understand the purpose, you might find ways to work with the person more easily.

You can also do this reading for another person who is struggling with a relationship.

Let the first card show you the purpose for person A to be in person B’s life.

Let the second card show you the purpose for person B to be in person A’s life.

Guidance on the Journey

The tarot card that is most often associated with sharing and helping is the Six of Pentacles. In this card we see a person who is prudently sharing their wealth with those who are less fortunate.

We associate this card with generosity and charity. We also associate this card with success, and the way success allows us to help others.

When we think about the wealth that is being shared in this card, we might consider that time and energy are also resources that can be shared. A gift of money is helpful, but so is a gift of time, or a gift of shared knowledge.

Hopes and Fears

Perhaps hopes and fears work together to help us achieve our goals.

A Monarch butterfly visiting a flower

Many traditional and modern tarot spreads have a position called ‘Hopes and Fears’. It is not one card for hopes and another for fears. Rather, it is a single card drawn at random to describe both hopes and fears at the same time.

For years I thought this was odd. How could hopes and fears occupy the same space?

Recently, the truth came to me. In a very real way, our hopes and fears are the same.

We hope that what we fear will not come to pass. We fear that what we hope will not come to pass.

We know that we cannot live life dictated by fear. Nor can we hang on to false hope. Yet, hope is often what gives us the courage to take next steps to fulfill our goals. Fear is also a motivator. Fear can hold us back, but fear can also move us forward. Sometimes our fear of losing spurs us on toward the win.

Perhaps hopes and fears are perfect partners, designed to give us every motivation to live the life we desire.

For StaarCon 2023, we are scheduling our Friday sessions a bit differently than we have done before. On Friday we will offer four intensive sessions, two in the morning and two in the afternoon. Attendees will choose one intensive to attend in the morning, and one to attend in the afternoon. Recordings for all sessions will be available during the AfterGlow.

Just prior to the opening ceremony we will have a sound bath with Jenny Stafford of Resonant Sound Healing. Jenny has studied, practiced, and taught multiple healing modalities for the last twenty-five years. She is also a passionate tarotist.

Jenny will guide us in using the healing frequencies of the sound bath in conjunction with specific tarot cards to set our intentions for our time at StaarCon.

After the sound bath we will have a short opening ceremony. The official events of the day will end with a Tarot Improv session led by Mitchell Osborn.

The tiki bar will be open for evening festivities for in-person attendees. Online attendees can gather in the Accelevents lounge for some after-hours social time before the four tracks of session begin Saturday morning.

Tickets will be available soon. You will be able to purchase tickets for single days, two days, or all three days of StaarCon 2023.

Interpreting Hopes and Fears

In my eleven-card Celtic Cross, Hopes and Fears is the penultimate card in the spread, Card 10. You may use a different sort of Celtic Cross, or a different sort of spread, that also has a Hopes and Fears position. You may also want to try a single-card reading for Hopes and Fears.

The question is, how do you interpret a card that is pulled to talk about both hopes and fears?

The key is entirely in the context of the card that is drawn.

Look at the card. What does it represent? Does it speak to something you have, something you want, something you actually hope for, or something you actually fear?

Think about your feelings about the card, and your relationship to those feelings. How does this speak to what is going on in your life?

When you look at a card from the perspective of hopes and fears, it can give a great deal of advice. A card drawn this way can help you understand your goals and reach them. A card drawn this way can help you mitigate your problems. A card drawn this way can help you acknowledge and verbalize your worries.

The Hopes and Fears card is truly a card of healing and attainment.

Guidance on the Journey

“I need you to tell me that my worst fears will never come to pass in my lifetime”.

That is a request that a tarot reading cannot always fulfill.

Sometimes the cards can be very reassuring. In those cases, we can be very comfortable relieving our clients, or ourselves, of those dire worries.

Sometimes, though, the cards cannot confirm that the things we fear will not happen.

Divinatory tarot is powerful. Divinatory tarot has the power to help in every circumstance.

When tarot cannot assure us that we will not have to meet a challenge that we fear, tarot can do something even better.

Tarot has the power to help us find our strength, and our courage. Whatever life may bring us, tarot has the ability to help us meet each challenge, and each joy, the best way possible.

The key is in the questions we ask of the cards. Sometimes the best question is not, “Will this feared thing happen?” Sometimes the best question is, “If this thing should happen, what can help me handle it?”

By helping us know we will be able to handle any challenge, tarot can turn our fears into hope.

The Awkward Number Five

It is impossible to achieve success without take a leap of faith and courage.

A woman climbing through a picture frame

This week our newsletter is Volume 5, Issue 25. I thought it would be fun to discuss the energy of the number 5 in honor of that milestone.

Five, in tarot, is an awkward number. To make friends with the Five cards we need a lot of nuanced thinking, and a lot of faith and courage.

When Five is your personality number, you might be social and fun-loving, but you could also be very changeable.

The number Five is associated with Mercury, so we can see the importance of communication and social connections, but also the possibility for tricky behavior.

If you are seeing multiple Fives around you, interpret this as a head-up for changes that can lead you to success. Look for opportunities around you.

When we look at the numbered cards in the Minor Arcana of tarot, we can see that Four cards can indicate stability, while the Six cards can indicate success. Here we see the way that Five cards, and the number Five in general, can be troublesome.

To get to the place of success, we must leave the comfort zone of Four. Five is where we are on our way to success but have not quite made it. We are no longer in the comfort zone, and not yet successful.

In that place of Five we must be comfortable with being uncomfortable, knowing that our success is coming, and is worth our hard work and sacrifice. We must believe in ourselves, and in our journey. We must see the future, and work toward it, without the structure we have known in the past.

It is probably impossible to become successful without passing through that awkward phase. Whatever your goal is, know that you must sometimes leave comfort behind, and live in a space that feels unstable, on your way to success.

What the Court Cards Want You to Know

This is because these cards are very versatile. They can reference the people around you. They can also reference parts of yourself. They can behave like any other tarot card and offer advice, comment, and prediction.

In this two-hour class you will learn easy ways to understand and work with these sixteen cards.

The Hierophant tarot card with candles and crystals

Guidance on the Journey

Major Arcana 5, the Hierophant, teaches us some important lessons about nuance and critical thinking. These lessons are necessary when we are going through ‘5 phases.’ That is, when we are going through a time of discomfort on our way to eventual success.

The Hierophant represents spiritual leadership, doctrine, and dogma. We know that spiritual study and mentorship are important. But we also know that dogma can be limiting, and mentors can become abusive.

It is so tempting to try to make something either fully good, or fully bad, fully helpful, or fully unhelpful.

Nuanced thinking requires us to be able to hold space for the idea that something, or someone, can offer things that are positive and necessary along with things that are difficult and troublesome.

As humans, we all have that mix within us, but have little patience and understanding for that mix outside of ourselves.

One of the lessons of the number 5, and the 5 cards in tarot, is to find the blessings in the difficulties, and tolerate the difficulties in the blessings. We also need to know when the difficulties should not be tolerated, even if that means sacrificing the blessings.

Reaching for the Stars

There is a difference between reaching for the stars, and wishing on a star.

Woman on a ladder reaching for the stars

We have all heard the expression, ‘reach for the stars.’ We know this to be an expression of encouragement and hope. What I did not know until recently is that this expression has a literal epic origin.

The Aeneid is an epic Latin poem written by Virgil between 29 and 19 BC. This lengthy poem is regarded as Virgil’s masterpiece, and is considered one of the greatest works of Latin literature. It is within that poem that the expression ‘reach for the stars’ made its first appearance.

Millenia later, we use this expression often in songs and stories, and in our own lives.

To reach for the stars is to try for the very best thing that could happen.

To reach for the stars is to have hope, even when things may look dismal.

There is also within our culture the concept of wishing on a star. I have been thinking about the difference between reaching and wishing. Both are about hope. Yet, there is an energetic and practical difference.

When we wish, we express a desire. When we reach, we actively try to achieve that desire. Reaching requires hope and ambition. Reaching requires a willingness to try and fail, or to try and succeed magnificently. Reaching requires a certain kind of confidence. When we reach for the stars, we are confident that we will either succeed, or survive the failure.

When we teach our children to reach for the stars, we teach them that we believe in them, and that their dreams and desires are valid. When we reach for the stars, we do the same for ourselves.

The Star tarot card

Guidance on the Journey

Major Arcana 17, the Star, is a card that we associate with hope, with healing, and with satisfaction. Although the image typically includes water, the Star is associated with Aquarius, which is an Air sign. Confusingly, the symbol of Aquarius is the Water-Bearer, which is the inspiration behind the Star image.

What is the Water-Bearer pouring and bathing in, if not water?

What we see as liquid in the images and symbols is starlight. That is, heaven’s healing light is poured upon the earth.

When I think about reaching for the stars, I think of that abundant light which brings healing, and offers hope. To me, this is what I see in Major Arcana 17. That the Star references both hope and healing reminds me that healing brings hope, and we can always be hopeful about our ability to heal.
