Why Friendship Matters

Some people think they don't have time for friends or that there are no like-minded people nearby. But potential friends are all around us.

Three friends jump with umbrellas on a cloudy day.

As children, we were expected to make friends with our peers. Some of us formed friendships that lasted a lifetime or that have been rekindled on social media. Some of us did better socially when, as we grew, we could find friends outside of the limitations of age and geography.

At some point in our development, the focus of friendship shifted from playmates to commodities. We learned that who we know and associate with could determine our career success. We learned that we needed to search for the life partner who would become our most important chosen family member.

Networking and romance are positive things that can enhance our well-being and happiness. My concern is that in adult life, networking, dating, and raising a family can become a replacement for friendship. Because time, money, and energy are sometimes in short supply, we sometimes evaluate people around us based only on how our proximity to them can help us.

I think it is important for us to make sure we have people who are our friends simply because we have fun around them. In May of 2023, the United States Surgeon General declared that the United States was in a loneliness epidemic. It turns out that not having friends is terrible for our health.

Making friends in adulthood comes naturally to some people, while others may find it more challenging. The emotional atmosphere of our childhood home can often be a determining factor in this. If you felt heard, seen, and prioritized as you were growing up, and people treated one another respectfully, you are likely to be able to maintain positive friendships. A household where adults are berating, neglectful, or dishonest does not teach good social skills.

If we are lucky enough to have a busy life otherwise, it can be easy to think that friends are an unnecessary distraction. If we have had only untrustworthy friends, we might conclude that friendship is more trouble than it is worth.

When we acknowledge and release past hurts, finding friends who are likely to be more helpful than hurtful becomes easier.

There is joy, healing, and happiness in choosing suitable people to be around and having those people choose us. Friendship matters because friends make our lives better. Good friends enhance each other’s lives.

It is a blessing when our family members are also our best friends. Yet, the friendships we find, choose, and maintain over time bring us valuable depth, support, humor, and growth.

The StaarCorner

One of the things I am most proud of as I watch StaarCon grow is the community of friends that grows along with it.

The first time I went to a tarot conference, I was amazed by the unique feeling of being in a room of mystical beings like me. Finding people who share my passions was exciting, healing, and enlightening.

StaarCon 2024 will be extra special because, for the first time and for no extra cost, our AfterGlow is extended for a full year. This means that we will have a special place to gather online with our StaarCon friends to continue to learn and grow for all of 2024.

Whether you join us for a single day, all weekend, online, or in person, your ticket will grant you access to the Accelevents lounges, where we will have regularly scheduled live classes and discussions all year.

Make your plan now to be part of our community and to enjoy your new divination friends.

Finding Community

Many people have confided in me that they feel isolated as mystical practitioners in their local community. Very often, it turns out that others in the same town or area share their interests.

Whenever people tell me that there is not anyone around them interested in tarot, I like to share a story.

A small library in a rural Florida town had hired me to teach a free class on tarot. As I drove to the library, I became concerned. Amid the farms, draped in Spanish moss, were many small ramshackle churches with hand-painted signs warning of hellfire and offering salvation. This did not feel like a tarot-friendly place at all. I was afraid of what might await me at the library.

I arrived early to set up and was greeted by at least twenty people, each clutching their tarot deck, anxious for connection.

These people were neighbors, and none of them knew each other. Everyone came to the library that night expecting to be my only student.

My takeaway from this experience is that we are likely never truly alone. There is always an opportunity for connection and community around us. We only have to believe it, look for it, and find it.

I enjoyed Nancy Hendrickson’s Oct. 17 blog post very much. I was also happy to see that her Ancestral Magick Divination Kit won a WDA award.

Creation and Divination

There are many ways that tarot and divination can help us make friends and have fun with our friends. According to Meetup.com, there are currently 323 tarot meetups in the United States. Countless other tarot clubs, circles, and regular classes meet in shops, homes, churches, and restaurants. Finding or founding a tarot group is a great way to develop your skills and make new friends.

Tarot conferences like StaarCon are another way to meet new people and develop great friendships.

Especially at this time of year, tarot is often a great addition to parties and gatherings. There are many ways to use your creativity and include tarot in group activities. This can include tarot costuming!

Cosplay is popular year-round, not only at Halloween. Tarot provides us with great costuming ideas. A tarot party where everyone must dress as a tarot character can be a lot of fun. Asking your guests to interact with each other as their tarot characters can bring our friendships and our tarot understanding to a whole new level.

Tarot costumes can be elaborate or subtle. Dressing as a tarot card or character is a way of embodying the energy of that card.

It can be an exciting exercise with friends or on your own to incorporate tarot symbols into your outfit and see how that affects or changes your energy for the day. For example, what happens if you wear a sunflower image to embody the Queen of Wands or the Sun?

How We Hear Spirit

Many people believe that spirit, or the universe, is always speaking to us and guiding us. This week we talk about how to listen.

A woman walks the shoreline surrounded by birds.

Spirit speaks to us in many ways. Some people are born with special abilities that allow them to see and hear spirit clearly. Others work to develop these skills. We all can hear the voice of spirit if we know how to listen.

Tools of divination such as tarot, Lenormand, oracle cards, runes, I Ching, and pendulum help us hear our own wisdom and messages from the spirit world.

We can often interpret the dreams we have when we sleep as powerful messages from spirit—likewise, the thoughts and visions we have in meditation and while daydreaming. Sometimes, the random memories and ideas that pop into our minds can be spiritually inspired, as can our creative works.

As we move through our day, we see numbers, animals, words, and images. Sometimes, these things have meaning for us. We sometimes hear music that delivers a message that feels profound.

At this time of year, many people believe it is easier for us to hear the voices of our loved ones in spirit and wisdom of our ancestors. During the World Divination Association conference this past weekend, a few presenters said things that reminded me to listen and watch for spirit speaking and moving in my life at this time of year and always.

I love that teachers from different traditions come to many of the same conclusions. While the nature of spirit and spirit communication remains intensely personal and mysterious, the commonality of our experiences gives even greater meaning to our practices.

When we say we are communicating with spirit, with whom do we believe we are talking?

Our culture and belief system often determines our perception of that. I believe that whatever is true about spirit is big enough to accommodate our personal experience and understanding.

Many of my friends and colleagues often say that the universe is always talking to us; we just need to know how to listen. This makes sense. Listening requires paying attention to what we experience. We must listen past the noise of our thoughts and the distractions around us to hear the truths that reside deeply within us and the connection in which spirit enfolds us.

Divination Mediumship

Many beautiful decks and tools are designed to help us as we attempt to communicate with those in spirit. The more we can experiment with these tools, the more we can explore our ability to connect with spirit.

However, it is important to know that any divination tool can be used to communicate with spirit. Think about it this way. When you make a phone call, who answers? That depends on who you call. It makes sense that it might be easier to ‘call’ certain spirits with specific tools. On the other hand, you can set your intention that a particular loved one in spirit, or a particular angel or deity, hear your question and answer through your divination, regardless of the tool you use.

You can experiment with this and see if some entities prefer to speak through particular decks or if you experience that spirit will answer when you ask, regardless of the tool. Simply address your energy and question to a specific entity and pull a card or group of cards. Interpret the card or cards from the context of your question. Very often, you will get a message that feels very appropriate. Sometimes, you may feel, hear, see, or even smell something that makes you feel the presence of spirit with you as you conduct the divination.

Are you interested in learning more about mediumship? Here is a beginner’s complete guide.

A woman sits outside reading tarot.

Creation and Divination

This past weekend, I enjoyed presenting at WDAVE Big Bang. My presentation was about difficult questions at the tarot table and the techniques we use to answer them. That workshop inspired me to share an essential creative technique you can use in your divination. This technique will work whether you use it with tarot or other oracles and whether you do it for others or yourself.

This technique is based on the idea that most questions you might want to answer with divination have numerous questions surrounding them. You will get your best answer if you divine on all the questions rather than only on the question that feels overarching.

Begin by writing your question at the top of a piece of paper. Now, under that question, list every question inspired by your original question.

For example, if your question is, “Should I put my house up for sale?” The list of questions would include your current feelings about your home to help you explore this potential change. The list would include predictive questions about the possible sale itself. The list would include decision-making questions about what your next home would be.

From this list of questions, create a spread and perform it.

This creative method of divination is potent because the energy you put into crafting the spread will infuse your reading with inspiration and intuition.

Seasons and Celebrations

How do you celebrate the autumn harvest season? Is divination a part of that? If not, maybe it is time for a new tradition!

October is one of my favorite months, especially since moving to a warmer climate. I love Halloween, the harvest season, Scorpio season, and the prelude to the winter holidays.

I never liked winter, even as a child. While October weather up north can be beautiful, the knowledge of what would come next quelled my autumn joy. Moving to a warmer climate has increased my enjoyment of all the seasonal holidays.

As a child, I loved costumes and candy. As a young adult, I loved going out in costume. When my kids were little, it was so much fun to help them dress up and take them trick or treating. When I discovered the spiritual aspect of the holiday, I worked to reconcile the fun and playful Halloween I had grown to love with the solemn holiday that honors our dearly departed. There is meaning and truth in all aspects of the season.

It can be easy to dismiss another person’s seasonal observation as fluffy and frivolous or pompous and pretentious. What works for one person will not appeal to another. What we, ourselves, enjoy can change over time as well.

This year, I intend to honor and acknowledge all the different traditions of the season, even if some aren’t compelling to me. The more we can appreciate our choices and the richness of our various traditions, the better our seasonal celebrations will be.

We are so pleased to welcome Tess to StaarCon and to offer this fantastic experience at our conference.

Seasonal Divination

Mediumship readings and readings that seek guidance from our ancestors are appropriate and effective at any time of year. Likewise, any divination tool can be used to communicate directly with those in spirit. Yet, it is delightful that there are so many tarot, Lenormand, and oracle decks explicitly designed for Halloween and spirit communication.

Some, like US Games, Inc.’s Halloween Tarot, depict Halloween's funny and cute traditions. Others, like Nancy Hendrickson’s Ancestral Magick Divination Kit, offer us a deep exploration of the wisdom of spirit.

Many people believe that the time leading up to Halloween, and shortly after, is when it is easier for us to communicate with the other side. When we combine the opportunity of this sacred time with the tools designed to honor the season and facilitate communication with spirit, our ability to make connections and find truth is extraordinary.

Many people have unique divination traditions at Halloween. You might use a specific deck or a specific spread. Your tradition might be because everyone loves readings at Halloween. Or, your tradition might be a deep honoring of your loved ones in spirit and a sincere effort to hear their wisdom.

No matter how seriously or lightheartedly you approach divination at this time of year, you will be surprised by the powerful truth you receive.

Creation and Divination

Whether decorating for a secular Halloween party, a Samhain gathering, or simply thinking ahead toward your winter festivities, tarot and divination can add energy and pizazz to your holiday celebrations.

An obvious way to add divination to your event is to engage a tarot reader to entertain your guests. You can also set small tables with oracle cards and let guests try their hands at reading them.

Classic tarot imagery is familiar and evocative. You can use tarot images to decorate your home, your dining table, or your food.

Prophecy Wines are affordable wines with a tarot image on each bottle, perfect for your adult celebrations.

Tarot cards can be a great tool to create fun and interactive party games, even if the guests are not familiar with tarot. You can implement a simple activity by handing out a tarot card to each guest upon arrival. The aim of the game is to have guests introduce themselves to each other by describing and guessing the meaning of their card images. This activity can serve as a great icebreaker and can help people get to know each other better.

If you prefer a more reflective celebration, a special holiday-themed divination can bring clarity, insight, and reverence to your observations.

There are so many ways to include tarot in your celebrations, whether spiritual or secular. Use your creativity and enjoy!

What Is Strength?

People think that strength is denying our emotions. This week, we are exploring the truth about strength.

A woman meditating.

Many people tell me that they want to be strong, or that they need to be strong. Sometimes, I ask them to clarify what strength means to them in that context. The answers vary widely.

Linguistically, strength often discusses physical ability or the capacity to withstand pressure.

In practice, many people define strength as showing no emotion. To me, that feels like the opposite of strength.

We also use the concept of strength to describe something outstanding or remarkable. Once, at a job where my physical appearance mattered, a boss told me my hair was ‘strong.’ While I was indeed having a good hair day, my inner jokester kept visualizing my red curls attempting to lift barbells.

I love this reference to strength in Max Ehrmann’s Desiderata. “Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.” To me, strength of spirit gives us the ability for resilience. Yet, strength is not synonymous with resilience.

Linguistically, emotionally, and spiritually, strength combines two attributes. One is the force needed for accomplishment. The other is the resilience necessary for longevity.

We nurture physical strength through exercise. Our emotional strength is not measured in the ability to hide our feelings. Our emotional strength lies in our ability to navigate through tough times while holding space for both joy and grief.

Fostering Strong Tarot Skills

The past few years have brought us many great new tarot decks and books as tarot continues to rise in popularity. This means more people than ever want and need to develop strong tarot reading skills.

Here are three concepts to consider. Embracing these concepts helps tarot students develop their strength as readers.

1. Each tarot card has a core concept, traditional associations, archetypes, spiritual lessons, and classic keywords.  Each tarot card can mean a wide range of things within a reading. Those meanings can be spiritual or mundane, contemplative, or predictive. There is much to learn about each card, but there is no limit on how the cards can behave in a reading.

2. Tarot reading is inherently intuitive, metaphoric, and contextual. There is no manual to tell you what a specific card will mean in a particular situation. You must let the cards speak to you in a fresh way in each reading.

3. The more you work with your cards, the more you will learn how the cards speak to you. Practice as often as you can. Keep track of the readings you do. Especially look for the outcomes. This will help you understand how tarot does and does not make predictions. Do not wait to be good at reading to get started; practice is the only way to build strong skills.

Creation and Divination

In the Waite Tarot, and in all Waite-inspired tarot decks, Major Arcana Key 8 is Strength. Strength is usually pictured as a woman and a lion. To me, this juxtaposition of gentleness and fierceness, and the tension therein, is the essence of what it is to develop and maintain strength of character and strength of spirit.

Here is a poem I wrote about Strength from my 78 Poems Project. It is one of my favorites. I hope you like it, too!

Strength

As water with patience carves into stone
So do hearts carve one on the other.
And when nature battles civility
New friends are drawn together.

Each has more reason to fear than to love
The dangers beckon, not understated.
This war is waged not with bullets but blooms
And fine compassion, communicated.

The gentle maiden must be of mind fierce.
She has enraptured a fierce jungle king.
The beast submits not by violence but choice
To a union of forces opposing.

Strength then is found not in warfare or blood
Nor in doctrine nor laws to rely on.
True strength is found in faith and control
With your hand in the mouth of a lion.
