The Power of Prediction

Everyone makes predictions, not just tarot readers! This week, we discuss the value of prognostication.

Concept illustration of a crystal ball.

Most people believe that tarot reading and psychic work are always about predicting the future, and they are surprised to learn that not every reader and not every reading is predictive.

Looking toward the future is something we naturally do. Everyone makes future predictions at some point, in some way. Doctors predict our health. Meteorologists help us plan our activities. Economic forecasters help us plan our finances. Trend spotters help us curate our wardrobes for the next fashion season.

Clearly, predictions are not always mystical.

We look to the future for hope, planning, and preparation. Yet quantum physics tells us that the minute we look at something, we change it.

Does divining the future change the future?

I think it does, but only in the most positive ways.

I recently led workshops on prediction in divination in my StaarCon 2024 AfterGlow Lounge, and we have had some very interesting conversations.

We discussed the questions we ask tarot that feel predictive but are not. These questions we ask about our future are within our control.

Here’s the difference.

“Will my house sell soon?” is about something out of our control. When we ask that question, we assume everything we can do to help the house sell has already been done, and we want to know what potential buyers will do.

By contrast, “Will I finish my project by the deadline?” is something that is within our control. When we ask a question like this, we are looking for guidance to help us succeed.

One thing tarot readers quickly learn is how much of the future is within our control.

Yet, there is also much that we don’t control.

I believe that wise predictions, even when they don’t offer what we had hoped for, can help us create the best future possible. Knowledge is power. If we are aware of something, we can prepare, mitigate, and perhaps take steps to avoid it.

Predictions can make us feel hopeless. Or, when we use them correctly, predictions can always give us the power to meet the future with hope, no matter what.

It’s easy to fear the future, with or without forecasting. Yet, when we trust ourselves to handle whatever happens, we can also trust that our future is worth planning for.  Then, we can have faith that good things are always on their way.

Three Ways to Make Predictions with Tarot

Not every tarot reader makes future predictions. If you want to use tarot to forecast the future for yourself or someone else, you can do it in a few ways.

You can use a tarot spread that has predictive positions. Any spread with a position for ‘future’ or ‘final outcome’ will have a prediction built in. Interpret the cards that fall into those positions as possibilities for the future.

You can think about a question for the future and pull cards to answer that question. While some readers are uncomfortable with yes/no questions, many of us use techniques to answer binary predictive questions effectively.

A third way to predict the future with tarot is to ask what might happen and pull a few cards. Interpret the cards you pull to inform you about possible future events.

Obviously, never use the cards to scare anyone. If difficult cards appear to describe future events, ask questions and pull more cards to help you understand and mitigate any upcoming problems.

Liz Worth shared some timeless wisdom about predictive tarot readings a few years ago.

Making Magic

The goal of magic is often to influence future events. The worry when we do this is that our magic might have unintended consequences. For example, imagine performing magic to bring quick money and having that money come as compensation for a devastating accident.

The late great Donald Michael Kraig often suggested that we should do a divination about our magical intention to make sure our plan is wise.

We feel called to influence future events when we are trying to avoid a problem or when we are trying to achieve a goal. We might use magic to help along a positive prediction or mitigate a negative one.

Whatever tools we use in magic, the most important tool is our visualization of the future we want to create. The more clearly we can hold that vision, the more likely we are to be successful.

This is one of the reasons that I love tarot magic. Because tarot is visual, it helps us create and successfully hold our vision.

Golden Moments

This week, we discuss the special moments that bring us healing, inspiration, and joy.

A happy woman with colorful balloons.

We are often urged to consciously make memories with friends and family by traveling and planning special events. So often, it feels like the measure of the success of these events is how good the resulting pictures look on Instagram rather than how much fun we had.

At the same time, we all have special memories of spontaneous moments with loved ones that were neither orchestrated nor expensive.

When times are hard, we might experience momentary respites when we find humor, fun, or inspiration that surprises us.

Whether planned or unplanned, we all treasure the moments that leave us with good feelings and good memories. We sometimes forget how important and healing these moments are and how often they can pop up, even amid difficulty.

When we are young, we envision our grown-up lives full of joy, productivity, and inspiration. What we discover is that adulting can contain a lot of drudgery, some misery, boredom, and fear.

It is often not until we have been adulting for a while that we understand the power and meaning of those joyful moments. Perhaps their fleeting nature is part of what makes them so powerful.

When we realize that even in the deepest darkness, we can find moments of light, we learn to look for those opportunities. We find they appear more often when we look for them.

Adulting isn’t easy, and life is challenging by nature. Yet, for all of us, those golden moments of fun, joy, and connection allow us hope, happiness, and gratitude.

Finding Joy with Tarot

The Ace of Cups is my favorite card for heart-healing. I sometimes hold this card to my heart chakra and breathe its energy into my heart center. This sort of tarot magic can be quick and helpful.

In readings, we can ask questions that help us process the things that hurt and worry us. This allows us space to find the joy available to us.

When we spend time with our tarot friends, we find the joy of connecting with those who speak our language.

From Around the Web

In honor of the late Rachel Pollack’s birthday, Mary Ellen Collins did a reading using Rachel’s Shining Tribe tarot deck and shared it on her blog. Very insightful!

The Guardian shared this interesting article about the problems we tarot readers face with online impersonators, and a possible solution.

We knew this was true. Yet, it is interesting to see a press release confirming the rise of tarot accessibility and acceptability.

A woman meditates, focusing on her heart chakra.

Making Magic

Last week, we discussed the grounding and healing that can come from working with the first three chakras.

This week, let’s focus on the heart chakra.

When we breathe into our hearts, we make room for our feelings.

When we exhale from our hearts, we release our pain.

When we focus on expanding our heart center, we make room for the joy that is healing and motivating.

Green stones, rose quartz and rose oil can support the heart chakra. Lavender is also supportive of heart healing.

When we work on healing our hearts, we make ourselves available for joyful moments.

People-Pleasing Isn’t Pleasant

Many of us are people-pleasers. This week we talk about what people-pleasing is, and how to heal.

A man overwhelmed by demands.

We often describe people-pleasers as those who prioritize the needs of others over their own to their own detriment.

I do not think this is an accurate description of people-pleasing because there are many times when it is appropriate to make the needs of others more important than our own, even when that incurs risk. Parents, soldiers, and first responders regularly sacrifice themselves for others because it is part of the job.

People-pleasers will often think of themselves as kind and generous and may indeed be so. Yet, people-pleasing is not helpful to anyone in the long run.

I believe that people-pleasing is very often borne of trauma. People who need to do for others constantly may be driven to prove their worth to themselves and others. People-pleasers may not have felt unconditionally loved as children, so they must do whatever it takes to get love and approval. People-pleasers may not have learned to have boundaries and say no, and thus are always at the mercy of the whims of others.

It is uncomfortable for people-pleasers to change their habits, but it is also very healing.

The first important step is to understand that when we do for others in a people-pleasing way, we aren’t being genuine and authentic. We often resent and wish we were not compelled to do all we are doing. When we go overboard doing for others, we are not trying to please anyone; we are trying to fill an empty place within ourselves or trying to avoid our own responsibility to heal by helping others instead.

When we do too much for others, we place an unfair burden on those we think we are pleasing. The only people who will be pleased by our ministrations are those who are empty inside and hoping to be filled by our attention.

We often try to please others because we feel guilty when we focus on our own needs.

It is easy to see how these behaviors and thought patterns might develop in certain family systems. When we look past the behaviors and find the wounds from which they spring, we have the opportunity to heal and to create healthy and mutually beneficial relationships.

A Two-Card Relationship Spread

Here is a simple two-card spread to help see whether we can help each other appropriately and whether a relationship is balanced.

Focus on any relationship. The first question is, “What does this person need from me right now?”

When you pull the card and interpret it, give some thought to whether this need feels reasonable and whether you want to be available to fill this need.

The second question is, “What do I need from this person?” When you pull and interpret this card, consider what you know about the history of the relationship and this person’s proven ability to fill this need.

Look at the two cards and see how they work together. How does that reflect the energy of this relationship?

The seven chakras are shown on a woman at the beach.

Making Magic

People-pleasing is essentially a self-esteem and self-worth issue.

There are many magical ways to help bolster our self-esteem and understand our value. One of the simplest is to work with the first three chakras.

The first chakra, often called the root or base chakra, deals with our most essential connection to earth. This is where we recognize our right to be where we are and that we deserve and can find the resources we need.

The second chakra, or sacral chakra, is where we are connected to family. It is generally our family that inadvertently trains us to become people-pleasers. Here, we can understand and heal family traumas and learn to feel safe with trusted people.

The third chakra, or solar plexus, is the seat of our will. When we are constantly motivated by the will of others, it is hard for us to know our own will. When we can acknowledge our goals and desires and feel confident to pursue them, we act from a place of self-esteem and self-worth.

There are many ways to support, heal, and strengthen the chakras. A simple daily meditation to bring energy and awareness to your first three chakras will help you quell people-pleasing tendencies and encourage your personal strength and determination.

Not Like the Other Kids

Feeling like we don't fit in is familiar and unpleasant. What does it mean, and what can we do? That's what we are talking about this week.

There are many seedlings, but only one is blooming.

On most Saturdays, I do a free readings live stream on my YouTube channel, “The Saturday Psychic Sampler.” I invite subscribers and members to ask specific questions so I can read for them.

It often happens that people in the chat discover a common thread. It can feel like we are all going through similar things simultaneously.

This past Saturday, the theme was the feeling of not fitting in.

This is probably a core trauma for many of us because the first time we experienced the feeling of being an outsider was in elementary school.

Sometimes, we are outsiders because we are obviously different from the people around us. Sometimes, we are outsiders even if we look like those around us because we think and act differently.

Sometimes, we feel ill at ease even when people welcome us kindly.

Usually, actively trying to fit into a group will fail miserably. If we need to hide parts of ourselves to fit in, we must evaluate how much we are willing to sacrifice to be part of that particular group.

I am very used to feeling like the strangest person in the room. You might think that comes from being a full-time tarot professional. The truth is, being a well-known tarot reader is what has allowed me to find my place in every group.

I was always a weird kid and not entirely like the other children. A lot of people can relate to this feeling. Do you remember wanting to fit in, be invisible, or stand out? I think I wanted a bit of all three, which made me even more awkward.

It was not until I, as an adult, let myself be fully myself that I found true community and that most communities would welcome me for who I am.

For me, the easiest way to fit in was not to try to fit in.

When I think of my young self, I feel a sense of pride in my individuality—something I never felt back then.

It feels good to be part of a group. Yet, if the group asks us to conform too much, we will lose ourselves in the process.

It’s okay to be different from the other kids. Maybe it’s even a good thing. And when we embrace our differences, very often, others will, too.

Tarot Spread for Fitting into a Group

Whether you make friends easily or are more often on your own, there will always be times when you need to integrate into a group where you feel you don’t fit in.

Here is a tarot spread to help you assess the situation, understand what is true, and show up in the best possible way for yourself and others.

The top three cards are what you need to know about the people, community or group with whom you are interacting.

The second row of three cards are things you are thinking and feeling about being part of this community.

The final row of four cards is as follows:

Card 7 is something true about you integrating into this community.

Card 8 is something you fear but is not true about this situation.

Card 9 is how you can show up best for this group of which you are a part.

Card 10 is how you can show up best for yourself when interacting with this group.

Doing the Magic

Are there ways to use energy to attract like-minded people and find community? Of course, there are!

Tarot magic is quick and easy.  My favorite cards for friends and community are the Three of Cups and the Four of Wands. If you are looking for friends with whom to do specific activities, you can find cards that relate to those interests. For example, a travel group or a card club would be the Chariot. You might use the Knight of Swords to find a writer’s group. Justice might help you find those you can unite to work for social change.

Place the cards overnight in a special place in your home, along with some flowers or sweet-smelling incense to attract sweet friends.
