Reframing Guilt

A lawyer with a gavel at her desk, looking unsure.

In criminal law, a person can be found guilty or innocent of crimes. In our own minds, we are constantly trying ourselves for crimes, real and imagined, and always finding ourselves guilty.

I learned to believe that guilt is a necessary emotion that provides guardrails to keep people from doing bad things.

As I deconstruct many of the things I learned in childhood, I now believe that guilt outside the courtroom is useless, irrelevant, and harmful. We do not avoid doing bad things because we fear guilt. We avoid doing bad things because we generally don’t want to do bad things.

As children, we were trained to feel guilty when we did something different than the adults wanted. Guilt became a weapon that others could use to control us and that we used to justify feeling bad about ourselves.

The truth is this. People who do bad things never feel guilty, and people who feel guilty usually haven’t done bad things.

We all make mistakes, and sometimes those mistakes hurt others. When that happens, we feel a great deal of regret, and we work to make amends. But guilt and regret are not the same thing.

When we do not have the energy, time, or ability to help someone in need, we may experience feelings of guilt. What we are truly feeling is, once again, regret. We regret that we are unable to help.

When we reframe guilt as regret, we can relieve ourselves of negative feelings and do what is needed to help others in difficult times. When we refuse to allow others to use guilt to control us, we heal from unhealthy relationships.

Cards for Guilt and Closure

Which tarot cards can indicate feelings of guilt? The High Priestess reversed is the first that comes to my mind, quickly followed by the Seven of Swords. The Three of Swords, Eight of Swords, and Nine of Swords could all indicate the self-torment of guilty feelings.

For me, the card that most clearly speaks of closure and the healing that comes from it is Judgement.

When you see these cards in a reading, you might discover you are dealing with feelings of guilt.

From Around the Web

Marion Kirk will be presenting a three-part intensive at StaarCon 5. She also just presented at the Tarot Association of the British Isles (TABI) Summer Conference. Here is her blog post about that.

StaarCon 2024 headliner Benebell Wen is an interesting blogger because she goes deep but is also culturally current. You can see this clearly in her most recent blog post comparing trad wives and girl bosses with the Eight and Nine of Swords as she draws her Ettiella deck.

Making Magic

When we need to reframe our feelings, water magic can work wonders.

We can wash away feelings of guilt in the shower and when we wash our hands.

A visit to the beach can become a cleansing ritual.

In its simplest form, water magic requires us to focus on what we wish to be rid of and visualize the water washing it away.

We can enhance this with special soaps, candles, incense, and prayers.
