Family Lore

A grandfather shares a story with his grandkids.

The other day I saw a nice new Buick in a parking lot that sent me down memory lane. My grandmother owned a Buick when I was quite young. I have many memories of the back seat of that car. Then, one day, she sold it. I was too young to know or understand why she sold it, but here is what I do remember.

For years after, no car she owned or drove was as good as that Buick. “I never should have sold the Buick” became part of our family lore. My mother and I would laugh at this privately. My grandmother never saw the humor.

Now I am older than my grandmother was when she sold that car. To this day, I think of Buicks as cars that should be kept and never sold nor traded in. This is not because I myself own a Buick (I never have) or possess significant knowledge of automobiles. It is simply because I grew up hearing how much my grandmother regretted letting that car go.

Her Buick, and her feelings about it, became part of our family lore, and that became a part of my subconscious programming.

My illogical feelings about a particular auto brand have not proven damaging to me or my family. Yet, so many of us heard our elders repeating things much more noxious than my grandmother’s sellers’ regret.

Family lore often includes stories, jokes, superstitions, and other fun things. I have at least one legitimate ghost story in my family history. Perhaps you do, too!

The stories we tell of our families help us understand our identity and keep our ancestors close. Yet, there is a difference between stories and unsubstantiated beliefs. Both are passed from generation to generation. The stories are valuable. The beliefs can be harmful to individuals, the families they form, and the societies they inhabit.

If we remain entrenched in the beliefs of past generations, how can we move forward to an authentic future?

Our families are our storytellers and lore-keepers, and that is a sacred thing. Yet, families often unconsciously perpetuate some ideas and beliefs that are based in falsehood. As adults, we have the responsibility to keep those stories and to examine those beliefs.

How Tarot Keeps Our Lore

Tarot is a storytelling device in many ways. Even better, tarot can help us question the stories we tell ourselves that may not be true.

Tarot is the story of the Fool, an Everyman character who represents each one of us on our journey through life. The Fool’s Journey is our journey. When we study tarot, we are compelled to think about our own history in a new way. This helps us understand our lore and tell it to ourselves and others in a way that supports our growth.

When we go through life events, we remember the cards that were often present in our readings during those times. Those cards become part of that story. As time passes, whenever we see those specific cards, we will receive a personal reminder of our journey.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. We can use the cards to understand and tell our stories in ways that can be healing, rather than hurtful.

Have you ever tried to get your pet to choose tarot cards? This is a fun article from an obviously questionable source, but still worth reading for the cuteness factor alone.

Many writers use tarot for storytelling. If you are working on a writing project, try The Storyteller’s Tarot Spread.

Communities

Did you know that storytelling is a craft that people study, and around which people gather? There are storytelling associations, festivals, and communities.

Storytellers share cultural wisdom and family lore, which inform, entertain, and build community.
