Happy Accidents

I often use the term ‘happy accident’ to describe the unintended positive happenings that sometimes emerge, even from difficult situations. I recently learned that the artist Bob Ross coined this term, or at least popularized it, in his show The Joy of Painting.

I will admit that I never watched that show. But I deeply understand the concept of a happy accident in creativity and in life. So often, the unexpected brings disappointment and fear. It is wonderful to remember that unanticipated good things also happen.

We often discuss things like this in the divination world; we frequently say there are no coincidences, only synchronicities. I disagree. I think some things are coincidental, and we are wise to dismiss them as such. Yet, those synchronicities are real and sometimes fortuitous. The challenge is to know when to pay attention to what we see as synchronicities and when to dismiss them as mere coincidence. For example, dating someone who shares your birthday is not enough of a synchronicity to assume this will be your lifelong partner.

The word ‘accident’ is almost always associated with something unpleasant or dangerous. The idea of a ‘happy accident’ is limited to mishaps where no one gets hurt, of course. Yet, we are so often hard on ourselves for even the most inconsequential mistakes. Let’s remember that sometimes, a mistake can turn into something extraordinary. As humans, we are destined for any number of accidents. It’s good to know that some of them will be happy ones.

Trends in a Tarot Reading

All of tarot reading can seem like a happy accident because the cards so often come up with surprising accuracy and synchronicity.

In a tarot reading, we can often spot trends of cards that give us extra information or help us find the overarching theme. When reading a group of tarot cards, please pay special attention to consecutive numbers within suits and see the stories they tell. Pay attention when a number or rank repeats; allow that to give you information. Look for similarities between cards in terms of image, theme, and even colors, and let that inform your reading as well.

The way the cards work together is never only a happy accident. Rather, these are ways to find information that will make your tarot reading rich and nuanced.

Communities

Communities rarely form by accident, but friendships often do. Generally, we need to be intentional about seeking community. Yet, once in a gathering, we often find one or two who will also become true friends.

The digital age gives us so many opportunities to seek out communities of people with whom we share interests. It is easy to check Meetup, Facebook events, and Eventbrite to see opportunities for us to gather with others. It is impressive to see the range of interests and the number of free and low-cost events.
