The Only Constant

This week, we are talking about the inevitability of change.

The life cycle of a butterfly.

The life cycle of a butterfly.

Years ago, I worked for a radio station. I knew something big had happened when, upon walking in one morning, I saw that an inspirational poster had been hung in a prominent spot. It read, “The Only Constant is Change”. I discovered there had been a huge personnel change overnight. At that moment, I thought the poster was a cheesy attempt to motivate us during a difficult time. In retrospect, I must admit that I have used that phrase to motivate myself countless times over the years after first seeing it that day.

We spiritual people talk about change all the time. We want to shift, transform, transmute, and evolve. We want personal change and social change. We want metamorphosis. We know that when we say that change is the only constant, we are also saying that a refusal to change leaves us stuck.

Change comes in two forms: the changes we choose and the changes that are forced upon us.

Sometimes, we forget that change, though necessary, is always hard. Even when we choose a carefully thought-out evolution, there may be grief, fear, guilt, and regret.

When change comes against our will, it can be even worse. Then, we must either accept or resist. Often, we resist at first and then slowly accept the inevitable.

Everything in nature is designed to change, including we humans. Yet, we get comfortable in what we know, even when what we know isn’t what we want.

To embrace change, we must embrace discomfort. We must also embrace the fact that resisting change will bring even more discomfort in the long run.

Closeup of the Wheel of Fortune tarot card.

Two Cards of Change

One of the first things we learn as beginning tarot students is not to fear Major Arcana 13, “The Death Card.” We are taught that while the lesson of Death is to accept all the cycles of nature, when Death appears in divination, it is likely discussing a change, such as a new job, marriage, or pregnancy, rather than a tragedy.

Death may appear to invite us to explore the feelings we have about our mortality and that of our loved ones.

Another card that speaks of change is the Wheel of Fortune. The Wheel of Fortune speaks to us of luck, fate, patterns, and karma. Yet, Major Arcana 10, the Wheel of Fortune, can also talk about the turn of the wheel that creates a change in your fortune. When upright, the change is desired. When reversed or ill-dignified, it may be a change you wouldn’t have asked for.

When we see the Wheel of Fortune as a card of change, we see the change as very likely unavoidable and likely caused by something outside of our influence. Death, too, will often speak of the changes we cannot avoid and did not create.

Which cards, then, speak of the changes we choose?

I think many of the Swords cards speak of our choices, as do a few Cups cards.

I have heard that some people see the Major Arcana, in general, as things that can’t be changed and the Minor Arcana as things over which we have influence. I bristle against this sweeping limitation. Yet, it is true that when we speak about change, the Major Arcana cards that address the energy of change do seem to talk about external influences, while the Minor Arcana cards do seem to indicate that we can make choices about the changes happening.

Making Magic

Do we ever perform magic to create significant change? I think sometimes we do, but it is usually for something specific, such as fertility magic to assist in becoming pregnant or money magic to assist in finding a new job.

Sometimes, we have the need for change but don’t know what change we want. I think it could be dangerous to manifest unspecified change. Here, I think it is better to ask for direction.

Divination is great magic for finding direction, but so is meditation. When we open our minds to the universe and ask for nothing other than a push in the right direction, positive change can come quickly!

Tricks and Treats

When we say that someone is haunted, very rarely do we mean to imply that they are having ghostly visitations. Rather, we are haunted by our memories and the injuries of our past. This week, we are putting those old ghosts to rest.

Children in costume trick or treating.

Not surprisingly, I love the spiritual and secular aspects of spooky season. I also love discovering the origins of all our holiday traditions. For example, the tradition of trick-or-treating originated from the custom of leaving sweets on doorsteps to placate the spirits who came back to seek vengeance on Halloween.

We humans often try to bargain with the energies we see as spiritual forces. That bargaining is something I think about often.

This week, though, I am contemplating the metaphor of appeasing our ghosts.

Beyond the concept of ghosts as actual spirits, we also use the term to describe things of our past with which we haven’t made peace. When we say that someone is haunted, very rarely do we mean to imply that they are having ghostly visitations. Rather, we are haunted by our memories and the injuries of our past.

To extend this metaphor, I think many of us are constantly tricked by the ghosts of our past. We often pay homage to what has hurt us rather than doing the painful work of healing.

Consider the person who grew up in an abusive family but puts their abuser on a pedestal or the person who blames others for their problems rather than taking responsibility for their own healing. It is impossible to heal when we cannot see or know the truth about our past.

Even those of us lucky enough to have avoided terrible trauma still have hurtful memories that cause us to believe negative and untrue things about life and about ourselves.

As we honor our ancestors and enjoy spooky season this month, let’s do what we can to put our personal ghosts to rest. We do that by unpacking and reprocessing past events, being gentle with our younger selves, and realizing that some things that we were taught and told might not be the truth.

Ask Tarot for the Truth

Many tarot spreads have a position for the past or recent events. Yet, most tarot spreads do not offer positions to help us deeply unpack and reprocess the past, so we often have to ask the right questions and create our own spreads.

What are the best questions to ask the cards when we are trying to understand something from the past? We want to discover the truth rather than the mythology that has sprung up about the past. That means we are asking the cards to show us what is true about something or someone. For example, we can ask questions such as the following.

What was this person’s intention when they did this?

What were the factors present at the time that caused me to make this choice?

How did those long-ago events affect my life?

What is true about this situation?

What can I know about this?

Making Magic

Can magic help us release the ghosts of our past? Yes, but we need to be careful to avoid spiritual bypassing and what therapists call “magical thinking.”

In psychology, magical thinking is the belief that our thoughts and actions directly influence external events.

But, wait a minute, isn’t that what we magical people know to be true?

This is where critical thinking is paramount.

We know that magic works and can make a difference. Yet, we also know that the magical and the mundane must work together. If we are doing magic to heal, we must also do the daily tasks that promote our healing and avoid the things that hurt us.

I believe that tarot is a fabulous magical tool for helping us understand and release our personal hauntings. Yet, we must show up for the deeply emotional work that goes along with understanding tarot and ourselves. The efficacy of our magic will be directly affected by the depth of our emotional presence.

Count Your Fears

Since some fears are real and helpful, and others are false and hurtful, how can we manage our anxieties so that we can be protected but not limited?

A child afraid of the dark.

A child afraid of the dark.

I have always loved the expression, ‘count your blessings.” I use this as a spiritual directive to enumerate the things in life for which I am grateful. I think the exercise of making lists can be magical and healing as well as practical.

Gratitude is such an important practice. Yet, we must also acknowledge all our feelings, including fear.

In the spiritual community, fear is often met with shame. Someone once told me that fear is “False Evidence Appearing Real.” Certainly, we do sometimes have anxieties about things that don’t exist. Yet, fear is a survival mechanism that keeps us safe. It is important that we avoid real things that can hurt us, and fear helps us do that. We do not need to feel ashamed of our fears.

On the other hand, some people use their fears as a shield to protect them from the rigors of personal growth. I think it is these behaviors that cause well-intentioned spiritual people to suggest that fear is never real or appropriate.

Since some fears are real and helpful, and others are false and hurtful, how can we manage our anxieties so that we can be protected but not limited?

I think the solution is to count your fears. Make a list of all the things that you worry about. Then, go through the list, making decisions about each fear one by one. Is this fear real? What can I do about it?
Scratch off the fears that aren’t about anything real. Then, you are left with actual concerns. Make a plan for how you will deal with each one. If there is no practical solution, prayer and acceptance are reasonable options.
It is impossible and unsafe to live a life that is truly fearless. Yet, if we take the time and energy to understand and manage our fears, we can live life fearlessly and joyfully.

Fear and Tarot

Tarot generates a lot of needless fear and some legitimate fears.

Some people fear tarot because they believe that tarot is inherently evil. Obviously, nothing could be further from the truth.

Some people fear getting a tarot reading because they don’t want to be scammed. Sadly, that is a legitimate fear because a lot of scam artists use tarot to rip people off. Nicely, it is easy to find and work with tarot readers who have legitimate reputations and community support.

Some people, even tarot readers, fear certain cards in the deck. It is important to know that every card in the deck gives important messages.

Some tarot students fear reading for others because they don’t trust their skills yet. The way around this is to be clear that you are still a student.

Some people fear getting a tarot reading because they think they will hear bad news about their future. Typically, a good tarot reading will be helpful and will offer suggestions to make your future what you want it to be. Yet, it is also true that we will sometimes hear things we don’t want to hear. Healing comes when we are able to discern unpleasant truths, face them, and find solutions.

Making Magic

Making lists and crossing items off them can be a magical act.

When we write something on paper, we make it real. When we write a solution to a problem, we have taken a magical step as well as a practical one.

This is why many magical rituals involve writing things and burning the paper as a way of releasing what we don’t need or attracting what we do.

Listing your fears won’t make them worse. However, making an effort to solve and release them can be a magical exercise with helpful results.

Before Us

To understand where we are, we need to understand how we got here.

Concept illustration of a family tree.

The word ‘before’ can mean at least two different things. When we speak of time, ‘before’ means in the past. When we speak of the present, ‘before’ means what is in front of us.

At this time of year, our thoughts often turn to those who came before us – our ancestors. We might wonder what past generations would think of what we have before us – the difficulties we face that can seem insurmountable.

Many people find comfort in the stories of their ancestors. The problem, of course, is that not all of our ancestors were admirable people. In mediumship, I have learned to believe that, after leaving this life, people find healing and become better than they were. Regardless of their actions in life, our ancestors are available to us now in spirit for wisdom, support, and guidance.  In recent years, primarily due to the ground-breaking work of Nancy Hendrickson, we tarotists have been using tarot to learn about our ancestors and work with them in deeply spiritual ways.

We have all heard the admonition that if we do not remember our history, we are doomed to repeat it. Yet, history is a tricky subject. Whether political, cultural, or familial, history is often misrepresented, misreported, and misremembered. Primary source material can be helpful as we try to make sense of the past.

As children, we are often told things about ourselves and our families that we need to unpack and revisit as adults. If we fail to reprocess these beliefs, we often struggle to have healthy relationships. That’s because many of us were taught to respect people who truly were not worthy of that respect.

In tarot spreads, there is very often a position for the past. I have wondered if it is necessary to consider the past in every tarot reading. Yet, as the expression goes, we didn’t just fall out of a coconut tree. Wherever we are and whatever we are doing is happening in the context of all that came before us.

To understand what we are facing now, we must understand what has come before us and how we got here. Divination, research, and asking the hard questions help us do that.

Understanding our history, personally and collectively, is a spiritual matter as well as a fact-finding mission. Yet, we also must deal with shameful aspects of the past. Sometimes, we minimize and deny. Other times, we hyperfocus and catastrophize.

We must find a way to understand and speak of the past clearly and honestly without fear of shame. Only then are we able to create our best possible future.

Ancestral Healing in the Cards

Many tarot cards can discuss the need for ancestral healing and assist us in ancestral magic.

Of course, the Empress and Emperor can be parents, and the Court cards can all be family members.

The Ten of Pentacles is a card that speaks of generations, legacy, ancestors, and progeny.

The Six of Cups speaks of the past.

Any time you perform a tarot reading, regardless of the question or topic, it is possible that generational and ancestral concerns may appear in the cards. It may be loved ones in spirit who want to say hello or traumas of the past that are the root cause of current problems.

In tarot, as in life, to understand where we are, we need to understand how we got here.

Making Magic

Much of the magic we do is healing magic. Much of what we must heal is generational trauma. Can the very ancestors who are the architects of our pain help us heal?

I believe so because of the power they receive and cultivate after leaving this life. I think we can even call on the spirits of the very people who hurt us in life for help in healing if we feel moved to do so.

In our society, we often discuss breaking generational patterns. When we heal from generational trauma, we create something better for those who will come next.

I also believe that when we do our work to heal our generational wounding, that healing energy travels to our ancestors as well as to our progeny.
