Everybody Lies
Two men shake hands, one with hidden fingers crossed.
The television series “House” aired from 2004 to 2012. I had heard about it because I don’t live under a rock, but I had never seen an episode until it came to streaming services. I watched the entire series recently and learned a lot from it.
Dr. House’s most famous catchphrase is “Everybody lies.” This is important to him as a diagnostician because patients don’t tell the truth about their lives, which makes finding an elusive diagnosis more challenging.
We can learn something from Dr. House.
As children, we receive a mixed message about telling the truth. Lying is bad, but families keep their secrets. We must always tell the truth unless that truth feels unkind.
I distinctly remember my mother explaining the confusing concept of a ‘white lie’ to me when I was about seven. I did not like that adults lied about Santa, the Tooth Fairy, and the Easter Bunny. When I raised my family, I found ways to keep the fun of the mythology without lying to my kids.
As children, we are taught that there are many kinds of lies, and only some are bad. Yet, we are also taught that dishonesty is always wrong. We are sometimes taught to feel shame for who we are and encouraged to present ourselves inauthentically. If we grow up in a household where emotional abuse is normalized, we often learn to lie to ourselves.
Is it any wonder that everyone lies?
Most of us seek integrity when choosing friends, community, and partnerships. If everyone lies, how can we discover who the honest people are?
First, we must all realize that we lie to ourselves. Self-honesty is hard to maintain consistently. We often lie to ourselves to protect someone who has hurt us rather than face the truth. We might lie to ourselves to make ourselves small because we do not believe in our capacity. We might also lie to ourselves by exaggerating our capacity and abilities or by erroneously releasing ourselves from things that are truly our responsibility.
Although most of us have a moral code that says honesty is best, we must understand why people lie and recognize that not all lies are malicious. The biggest lie we tell ourselves is that we never lie and never want to be around people who lie.
I think we need to be clear about the difference between malicious lies and other kinds of untruths. If we avoid malicious lies and those who spread them, we will have better experiences with the people around us. If we are sensitive to the untruths we and others believe, we will have a better opportunity for healing.
If we adopt a policy like Dr. House and assume that people may not be telling the truth, how does that change how we move through the world?
So often, we base important decisions on what other people tell us. If we know that everybody lies, we will make decisions based on what we know to be true for ourselves rather than being unduly influenced by others.
If we understand that many lies do not come from a place of malice, we can remove the judgment that creates bad feelings and get to the truth.

Finding the Truth with Tarot
Many cards speak of truth, trust, and communication. The High Priestess is a keeper of secrets. The Magician, associated with Mercury, can discuss communication and miscommunication. Justice, when reversed, can discuss a situation that feels unfair, perhaps caused by dishonesty.
Since the suit of Swords is associated with Air, we can say that this entire suit is about truth and trust and the lack thereof. Perhaps that is why so many Swords images are so often distasteful. Of special interest in the suit of Swords is the Seven of Swords, nicknamed ‘The Thieves’ Card.’ Does this mean the Seven of Swords will always reveal a dishonest person? Not always. We may receive the Seven of Swords when we do not trust ourselves when we should.
The Ace of Swords commands us to tell the truth and do the right thing, as does the entire Swords Court.
The Seven of Cups can remind us to stay grounded in reality even as we imagine and manifest our future.
At the tarot table, clients often lie to themselves as they lie to their readers. Sometimes, clients will intentionally lie to their readers as a test. In my experience, individual cards do not often convince me that my client is not telling the truth. I get the evidence I need when the majority of the cards tell a story drastically different from the story the client is telling.

Communities
Spiritual communities like churches, covens, reiki circles, and tarot groups share something in common. As spiritual groups, they offer healing. As groups that offer healing, they attract people who need healing.
Unhealed people are often complicated and can be disruptive to the community. As community members and leaders, we must always be aware of the balance we must maintain.
We must be able to welcome and support those in need of healing unless or until their presence causes damage to members of the group or the group process.
Over the years, I have seen many groups mishandle this balance, usually because they have the best intentions.
I have also seen that when group leaders take the time to work with troublesome individuals one-on-one, the situation usually resolves well. Either the individual is able to become a valuable group member or they find another group that suits them better.
The worst thing a community can do is ignore difficult behavior in the hope that it will go away on its own.
