When Fiction Tells the Truth

Not everyone reads for pleasure. Yet, most of us enjoy a good story, whether it’s a movie, a television show, or a novel. I love to read fiction. Sometimes, friends have told me that they did not expect a novel to lead them to personal growth or spiritual truth. They are pleasantly surprised when this happens. I recall reading fiction as a child, such as A Wrinkle in Time and The Chronicles of Narnia, and discovering profound meaning and insight within them.
I often recommend that clients read certain books or watch specific movies to help bring something important to light. As children, we often imagine ourselves as superheroes from our favorite stories. We may be doing more than developing our imagination in those moments.
Perhaps, when we are inspired by fiction as children, we learn a powerful tool we can use at any age to inform and transform ourselves. Biblically, we know that Jesus taught in parables, using short stories as metaphors for his lessons. Aesop’s Fables were meant to teach valuable life lessons.
Much of our spiritual study stems from in-depth, thought-provoking books and podcasts. Sometimes, a good story is more than entertainment; it’s a creative way to open ourselves to a new energy that brings growth and healing.

Stories in Tarot
Tarot is all about stories. In a tarot reading we look to find the story being told by the cards. When we learn tarot, we find the stories in the suits and within the Major Arcana.
We know that the Fool is the star of the story told by tarot. The other seventy-seven cards represent the people the Fool will meet, the lessons he will learn, and the things he will do.
The story of the Fool’s Journey in tarot has become foundational in tarot understanding.
Fiction writers use tarot to inspire stories and help with character development. There are so many ways that stories are told with tarot.
Tarot helps us reflect on the stories we tell ourselves that do not serve us. Perhaps most importantly, tarot helps us discover new, more authentic stories.

There are book groups, film clubs, and writers’ groups in almost every town and city. Whether your goal is to make friends, have meaningful discussions, have fun, or a combination of all, meeting people to share ideas is a great way to grow and be part of a community.
I am often asked to provide short tarot readings at monthly book club meetings. I am usually impressed with the way the members are reflective, intelligent, and fun-loving.
I have also belonged to some good writers’ groups. The accountability and inspiration that comes from meeting with those who share your goals and struggles cannot be overstated.
