How We Perceive Choices

Much of how we perceive our history and tell our stories is influenced by our understanding of the choices available to us and the process we use when making decisions.

It is alarming to me how often, at the tarot table, I see that people are unaware of the agency they have in their own lives. This can show up in a number of ways. Sometimes, after a difficult life path decision does not receive full support from family members, people second-guess themselves, wondering if they made the right choice. In these cases, the cards often reflect that there was no other possible path. In fact, calling the pivot, or course correction, a ‘choice’ feels like a misnomer. The cards often say, “What other choice did you have?” In these cases, people fail to use their agency to stand up for themselves and their path.

I also often encounter people with the opposite problem. That is, people who cannot perceive that there are options open to them that could reduce their suffering or open up new avenues for success. It sometimes feels that people are stuck in their own way because they are unwilling to imagine any possibilities other than the one they are living in.

In both cases, our perception of our options and decision-making capabilities is significantly influenced negatively by our worries and anxieties. If we can identify and address those concerns, we will have fewer regrets from the past and greater agency to make the choices that give us the best advantage for the future.

Exploring Choices with Tarot

There are a few tarot cards that speak about choices, and a few tarot techniques that can help you explore your decision-making process.

From my perspective, the three tarot cards that speak most directly about choices are the Two of Swords, the Seven of Cups, and the Lovers. Each of these cards also has unique qualities. The Two of Swords advises us to make decisions with the head rather than the heart, and to eschew the opinions of others in favor of our own logic. A keyword for the Two of Swords is ‘Peace,’ which asks us to be at peace even when we do not know which path to take, and to be at peace with the decisions we have made.

The Seven of Cups offers us an array of possibilities, some of which are far better than others. We have options, but we must be careful of the consequences of our choices. We must be aware, too, of which options are real and which are borne of fantasy.

The Lovers is most often used to consider and describe relationships. Yet, one of its most important aspects is decision-making. This card speaks to our ability to decide whom and what we want to be in relationship with, and what we would prefer to be without.

When faced with a decision-making question in a tarot reading, it can be helpful to ask the cards, “What factors should I consider when making this decision?” or, “What is most helpful for me to know as I make this decision?”

Often, I will pull cards for each option to see how each choice might play out and what needs to be considered.

Tarot cannot make decisions for us, but we can certainly use the cards to help us explore our options and make the choices that will serve us best.

Communities

We all seek the support of like-minded people and the opportunities to engage in community activities. Unfortunately, there are many communities that prey on our desires for inclusion and connection.

One huge warning sign is that predatory communities will use coercive tactics to get you to join them. We all want to feel welcome when we join a new group. Yet, there is a clear line between welcoming participation and requiring participation.

Whether a community is religious, spiritual, charitable, or creative, it is important to choose people to gather with who make us feel uplifted and engaged, rather than shamed or unworthy.

If a group you are spending time with does not feel right for you, there should be no problem with you questioning or leaving the group. The more a group fights to keep you, the bigger the warning is that you need to leave.
