The Biggest Mystery

Everyone loves a good mystery! Many people use spirituality to explore or explain the more profound mysteries of life and death. Yet, in the final analysis, we understand that no living human can prove that their beliefs are more accurate than anyone else’s.
We may think that what happens after death is the biggest mystery we face. I believe there is one that is even bigger and more important, and that is to discover who we are now, while we are alive.
While some take self-discovery to a level that becomes self-absorption rather than enlightenment, most of us would do well to spend more time finding the answer to that important question, ‘Who am I?’
Self-discovery takes time and happens in layers. If you grew up in a high-control household, solving the mystery will be more difficult for you since you were likely not allowed to have likes and dislikes of your own. Sometimes, we need to actively allow ourselves the time and energy for self-exploration and discovery.
Self-discovery can happen in numerous ways. Divination systems, such as tarot, can be immensely helpful, as can therapy, journaling, talking with good friends, and meditation. Trying new activities or giving a second try to activities you attempted in the past may yield delightful results.
It is also important to receive new information about yourself without self-recrimination. If you are doing self-discovery correctly, some of the things you discover won’t be your favorite, but will still be helpful to know and accept. And, if you discover a difficult trait, you can work to change it. Self-discovery almost always turns into self-improvement.
Discovering who you are will allow you to be a better friend to yourself. Often, our sense of self is shaped by the criticism of others. At the tarot table, people reveal that they believe they are lazy, or selfish, or have other difficult traits, when I have not seen anything of this nature in the cards. When I ask them why they believe this about themselves, it is always because a parent or partner repeatedly told them. Part of self-discovery is releasing the negative stories other people have said about you and embracing what is true.
Because we are always changing and growing, self-discovery is never a finite endeavor. There is always something new to reveal as we work, over time, to solve the biggest mystery and create a sense of identity that works for us.

The Moon: Card of Mysteries
Major Arcana 18, the Moon, is one of the most mysterious and complex cards in the deck. A good key phrase for this card is, “All is not how it appears.” This can lead us on a quest for spiritual truth, or it can warn us to find the hidden enemy.
The Moon reminds us that everything looks different at night. We must look deeply and seek truth.
The Moon invites us to solve a mystery, or at least to acknowledge that we do not know everything, even if we think we do.
When we study this card, we must consider that we are all called, to some degree, to seek a spiritual path. That path is always treacherous. When we look for spiritual truth, we will inevitably run into spiritual bypassing, spiritual narcissism, fundamentalism, magical thinking, and other follies. We must be able to discern our path and stick to it. The Moon offers us the ability to say no to the bad and yes to the good, and to know the difference between the two.
When the Moon appears in a reading, it can suggest timing, indicating that something will occur in a month or at night. The Moon may give us a warning to look deeper and not trust something on the surface level. The Moon also asks us to look within ourselves to find our answers. In this way, the Moon is an advocate for self-discovery.
When the Moon appears, we know that a mystery is at hand. We must look to the other cards and to our own intuition to solve that mystery. Sometimes, the mystery is our own self-discovery!

Communities
Many communities form to help members grow and heal. Perhaps the most famous such community is Alcoholics Anonymous, which has helped many people recover from addictive behavior. Many self-help groups now utilize the Twelve Steps because they offer a model for personal responsibility, support, and healing. One of the great things about most Twelve Step meetings is that they are available free of charge.
Many therapists offer group therapy, which can be an affordable and effective way to heal or to manage issues like depression and anxiety. Sometimes, finding safety and commonality in a group of strangers is the most affirming thing possible.
Not everyone struggles with something that would require a community to help with healing. Yet, throughout a lifetime, many of us encounter situations that lead us to these types of support groups, whether in person or online.
When we gather in community for mutual healing, we also help one another in the process of self-discovery, as we cannot fully heal ourselves if we do not understand ourselves. Very often, the moment we realize we need help is also the moment we recognize the need for a deep dive into self-understanding.
