Looking for Love

We come out of the womb and into the world seeking love. Yet, we also enter the world fully capable of giving and receiving love. I often tell nervous parents-to-be not to worry about their emotional capacity to welcome their child because children bring love with them.
As a tarot professional, I am often both disturbed and amused by the prevalent fallacy that most of the work I do is related to romance. Of course, I love doing readings about relationships, but not every relationship reading is about a romantic relationship. We have relationships and relationship problems in many contexts throughout life. Our friends, family members, and co-workers can all bring joy and sorrow to us, just as our romantic relationships can.
Many people have a great deal of fear that they won’t find a romantic partner or that their relationship won’t work out. They characterize not being in a relationship as ‘being alone’. This does not make sense to me. Being single is not synonymous with being alone or with being lonely. This fear can sabotage new relationships and lead us to enter into unhealthy ones.
All relationships are complicated. One of the reasons there is often a greater focus on romantic relationships is that they can be the most complex of all human relationships. If a relationship goes well, we become family to one another. Yet, it can be challenging to create a new family when we each have preconceived notions of what a family should or should not be, based on our upbringings and experiences.
The excitement of a new romantic relationship is intoxicating. When we connect with someone special, we immediately imagine a future that may not happen. The heartache we feel when it doesn’t work out is exacerbated by losing the vision of what we had imagined.
Although relationships are complex by nature, I believe they are further complicated by the fact that many of us lack sufficient self-love. If we speak to ourselves as kindly as we speak with our friends, we learn to love ourselves better. That leads to better choices in relationships.
Things that happen in childhood can teach us to seek out the wrong partners and bad friends, and encourage us to misbehave or tolerate bad behaviors. The more we develop self-awareness, the more intentional we can be in our relationships.
Love is all around us, and romantic love is not always the most important love for us to seek. The more we can nurture the energy of love within our hearts and develop a good understanding of ourselves, the more likely we are to have healthy relationships and a happy life.

StaarCon Virtual and StaarCon 6
Here is some important information about what comes next for the StaarCon AfterGlow, and StaarCon 6.
The initial concept for StaarCon was to host a traditional three-day tarot conference in a hotel in Palm Beach Gardens in January 2021. When the pandemic struck, we had to make a decision. Should we postpone our conference, or move it online? When we found Accelevents, we knew we could have a great online experience, and we did.
When we were able to meet in person, we realized we did not want to give up the added benefits of the virtual platform. Thus, for the past four years, we have been learning the best ways to do something that had never been done before, a fully hybrid tarot conference.
While one of our core missions has always been to offer a wide range of topics at StaarCon, we have enjoyed expanding into all aspects of divination, magic, spiritism, art, and creativity. We are no longer simply a tarot conference; we are a conference of exploration, creativity, and spirituality.
We have come to understand that the hybrid experience is different for everyone. Some attend online only, some come to the conference in person but stay connected on Accelevents all year, and some come to the conference and don’t spend much time using the online portion.
We are committed to offering accessibility, and part of that commitment is providing affordable options. In 2020, when we sought a suitable online alternative to a hotel conference center, we were delighted to discover Accelevents. Now, we are creating our own virtual platform that will work with our website, StaarCon.com. This will reduce confusion, enhance functionality, and enable us to offer more programming and more flexible ticket options.
The StaarCon 5 AfterGlow will continue through January 20, 2026. Before the close of the AfterGlow, tickets will be available to join the new online platform. We will begin offering new content and sharing some recordings from prior years immediately.
In this way, StaarCon virtual experience will begin online immediately after the StaarCon 5 AfterGlow ends.
Look for announcements of what we will be offering and how to get tickets coming soon.
There is something special and irreplaceable about our in-person gatherings. Over the next year, we will be working to create a wonderful in-person experience for StaarCon 6, to be held in 2027. Expect more of what you have loved in the past, and some great new offerings, all at an affordable price. The live, in-person experience will be shared with the virtual community on the new virtual platform, and recordings will be available to all StaarCon 6 attendees.
We are excited about what we have built together over the past five years, and we look forward to creating StaarCon 6 with you.

Tarot cards with a focus on the Lovers.
What Tarot Teaches About Love
We can learn so much about love and relationships when we study tarot. One card that has a particular message for us is Major Arcana 6, the Lovers. In the Waite version of this card, Adam and Eve are depicted as the archetypal divine couple, or syzygy. An angel watches over them. Eve is looking at the angel, and Adam is looking at Eve.
The Lover’s counterpart by numerology is Major Arcana 15, the Devil. Here we see these same two characters, now imprisoned by the devil character, and by their own choice.
The profound lessons we can learn from the Lovers and its stark relationship to the Devil stand in contrast with the hordes of querents on social media who just want to know when they will find love or if they will reunite with their exes.
When we consider the Lovers, we recognize that it is associated with Gemini and is therefore related to the element of Air. We might think the Lovers should be an emotional Water card or a passionate Fire card, but that is not the case. Air is about communication, integrity, and intelligence. The way we communicate and act, as well as the decisions we make, are the most important factors when it comes to finding and building good relationships.
When we think about the Devil, we often consider the ways we become entangled in unhealthy behaviors. When we examine the Waite Devil image, we see that the chains around the necks of Adam and Eve are loose, and their hands are free. They are there by choice. How often do we stay in bad relationships willingly? And then, once we finally break free, how often do we wish we had done so sooner?
Each tarot card has many lessons for us, and many can teach us what we need to know to love ourselves and find and maintain the love we desire. We learn further when we dig deeply in a tarot reading, moving past surface questions of desire and into deeper questions of true contemplation and understanding.

Communities
Are dating apps online communities for singles to meet one another? In some ways, I suppose they are.
As someone who has been married for almost thirty years, I have never needed to use a dating app. Yet, I know a great deal about them because I talk with so many who do. I also know a lot about modern dating coaches for the same reason.
Some dating coaches create online communities for their followers and clients. Very often, they have a specific formula for love they want to sell you. I have seen a great deal of wisdom from some of them, and a considerable amount of questionable guidance from many.
When I was single in the 1980s, we met each other in bars and at parties. I’m not sure that beer goggles are recommended for good first encounters. Today, many people long to meet potential candidates organically, rather than through an app, a dating service, or a coach.
As someone who has been a full-time tarot reader since before the advent of home computing, I can say the following with confidence. Dating is scary, no matter what. The chances of long-term success are not predicated on where and how we meet someone. But if we want to make friends, we need to be available to meet people. If we want to find a romantic relationship, we need to do the same.
My mother used to say, “There really is someone for everyone.” The context made it both amusing and somewhat unkind. She would say this when she met an odd person and discovered they had a spouse, often one who was equally unconventional. I am not sure it is true that there is someone for everyone, but I know that if we want to have good people in our lives, we have to be open and proactive.
Being proactive can involve joining clubs and participating in community activities, as well as online communities and apps. There is never a need to be without friends, and if we want romance, actively seeking it can’t hurt and might result in something great.
