On the Road Again
Illustration of a travelling bus.
There have been times in my life when I traveled throughout the United States often. Before the pandemic, I frequently traveled to the Northeast for both business and pleasure. When I was much younger, I traveled the country following the music and magic of the Grateful Dead.
Traveling has always been a combination of business and pleasure for me. When I traveled to follow the Grateful Dead, I sold crystals, beaded jewelry, and clothing in venue parking lots across the country.
This summer I had the chance to travel to a place I had never been before. I spent the weekend near the George Washington National Forest in Virginia, and it was positively uplifting.
This week, I will return to the Tampa Bay Area for the first time in several years. It is a short trip, but I am looking forward to it.
I do not enjoy cruises or luxury vacations, but I do enjoy an opportunity to work and play in a place that is different than my home. There is something special about the process of travel, and about being in new places, seeing old friends, and making new ones.
I think, too, that when we take ourselves out of our usual routine, we open ourselves to new ideas and new inspirations. It’s also true that we can gain a clearer understanding of our own sense of self when we observe what it feels like to be in a different environment. A day or two in a different location can bring us clarity and perspective, as well as an enjoyable time.

Traveling with Tarot
I learned to read tarot while traveling in the back seat of an old car from state to state. I have read tarot in parking lots, on car hoods, in nightclubs, on military bases, and just about anywhere else you can think of. Tarot comes with me wherever I go and has since I first owned a deck.
Tarot has been the reason for most of my travel over the past many years, whether for a conference or a private reading engagement. Even if I were traveling for pleasure, there would always be a few tarot decks in my suitcase. I was delighted when tarot decks in tins became a thing about ten years ago. This makes traveling with your cards easier than ever!
There are a few tarot cards that can predict or discuss travel as well. The Chariot, of course, can speak of transportation and vehicles. While the Six of Swords is not technically a card of travel, the Waite depiction has created the key phrase of ‘travel over water’, which is now sometimes associated with this card. I also think about the Eight of Wands and all the Knights as cards that can reference travel.
Tarot author Eden Gray coined the term ‘The Fool’s Journey’ to discuss the archetypes of the Major Arcana and the way their story unfolds. I believe that the Fool travels through each of the suits of the Minor Arcana as well.
Whether we are discussing the metaphoric and archetypal journeys within the cards themselves, using the cards to discuss our travels, or traveling because of the cards, tarot seems to connect to travel in a lot of different ways for me.

Communities
In the 1980s, I was part of an unintentional traveling community of music lovers, and it was a lot of fun! Before cellphones and social media, we would travel and meet each other along the way, helping one another when needed.
Of course, there have always been nomadic societies. In Western culture, traveling communities are not the norm but do exist. Full-time RVers often travel as a community.
In South Florida, where I live, there are communities of snowbirds who travel from colder climates to enjoy our lovely weather during the winter.
We also have communities that travel to meet one another, like StaarCon and other conference communities.
We often think of travel as a way to escape our local community for a moment. Yet, sometimes travel offers the opportunity to be part of new interest group or new group of friends.
