Accidental Guidance

Sometimes answers come when we ask the right questions. This is true when discussing both mundane and mystical things. But determining the right questions can be challenging. We don’t know what we don’t know, and sometimes our imagination does not stretch to all the possibilities.
I am sometimes irritated by people who believe that a tarot reading is simply an answer to a question, rather than a full spirit-led conversation. Sadly, some of the people who think this are tarot readers themselves.
I have a principle that guides me in tarot reading and life. That principle is that we do best when we stay open to all possibilities, so we can always be prepared for the worst and present for the best. In life, this means remaining fluid and flexible. At the tarot table, this means to read the cards beyond the questions. There have been many times that, in retrospect, the most important things that came out of a client session were not on the client’s list of questions.
The universe has a way of speaking to us, providing keys and clues, often when and where we least expect it. I believe that we continually receive spiritual guidance, whether we seek it through divination, meditation, or by paying attention as we move through life.
Sometimes it feels that the universe is breadcrumbing us by withholding the answers we most desire. We need to trust the guidance we receive, even when we are unsure of the following steps, and we need to trust that everything will be clear when we need it to be. Sometimes this means sitting with something that feels uncomfortable.
When you are unable to hear your guidance or are unsure if you are interpreting your guidance correctly, a consultation with a good reader or a new oracle might give the insight you need. Yet, it is equally important always to remember that guidance can come to us anywhere and at any time. This ‘accidental guidance’ is often the most powerful of all because it affirms the presence of spirit in our lives.
Hollywood (and the Old Testament) lead us to believe that a soundtrack and special effects should accompany spiritual insight, mediumship, and psychic downloads. The truth is, the voice of spirit is often subtle yet persistent. The voice, or the nudge to pay attention, can be very quiet. Yet, if we choose to ignore it, that feeling can nag at us. I’ve learned that it is always best to pay attention to that little voice, or slight tug at my attention. This is often how guidance we need but didn’t ask for first becomes apparent.

Allowing Intuition to Lead
You may have heard me say how much I dislike it when tarot readers and teachers tell people to trust their intuition without providing further instruction. It is so easy to confuse the voices of fear and desire with that quiet voice of guidance.
Yet, if we do not allow intuition to guide us when practicing divination, we will miss out on a great deal of the guidance the reading has to offer us. This is also true in life. If we do not stay open to the signs and synchronicities around us, we may miss warnings, inspiration, and opportunities.
Intuition is enhanced in divination when we invoke spirit and create sacred space before commencing the reading. In life, it becomes easier to hear and follow our intuition when we remain open to it. Sometimes, our intuition leads us to a loved one in spirit, or an opportunity to receive a channeled message.
Prayer, meditation, yoga, and breathing techniques are all ways to enhance intuition. In divination and in life, we need to allow intuition to speak when it needs to, not only when we have a question and want an answer.
