The Correct Collaborators

Three People Collaborating on a Project.

Three People Collaborating on a Project.

Even the most solitary and self-sufficient people cannot do everything on their own. We all need help from time to time, even when it is hard to ask. I know many people who are much happier to help others than to ask others for help.

Very often, the energy changes a bit when we think of our helpers as collaborators. In the workplace, we are often required to collaborate with colleagues who aren’t a great match for us. Yet, the feeling of synergy that comes from creating something with a work partner can be magical, and the results can be impressive.

In our personal lives, we often collaborate with service professionals, salespeople, and medical professionals. I know we don’t usually view a visit to the doctor as a collaborative experience, but it very much is. We must work with our health care professionals to achieve the best results.

To thoughtfully assemble your team of helpful professionals is to invite collaborators to help make your life as good as it can be. When we choose friends, project partners, and life partners, we need to think about that process as choosing collaborators, and we need to remember to partner well with others to work together toward our common goals.

No matter how individualistic one may be, the old expression that no one is an island is very true. We need each other. The more we invite collaboration and focus on finding the right people to collaborate with, the better we are.

Questions For the Cards

Whether you are hiring someone to work on your home, finding a new doctor, or choosing a writing partner, the cards can help you find the right people and make the best of the partnerships in your life.

Asking if someone would be good to work with is less helpful than trying to figure out what is true about this person and their skills, and how the two of you would work together.

For example, if your boss has assigned a shared task to you and a coworker you don’t typically get along with, you could ask the following questions.

  • What skills does this person bring to this task?

  • What should I do in order to make this person comfortable with me?

  • How is this person likely to fulfill their responsibilities for this task?

  • What can I do to make sure this task is done properly?

If you are looking for a collaborator, you can ask the following questions.

  • What are the qualities I am looking for?

  • How can I find the right person?

If you have chosen a new service person or collaborative partner, you can ask questions like this.

  • What should I be aware of about this person?

  • What can I do to make this a successful project?

Tarot Wisdom For the Week

Many tarotists see the Three of Pentacles as the card that speaks of collaboration most prominently. I have to admit that I have rarely, if ever, seen the concept of collaboration in this card. Yet, I know that I am definitely in the minority.

I also know a few people who interpret the Three of Pentacles as a pregnancy or a new baby. Both of these interpretations come from the Waite-Smith image. We see collaboration in the image because three people are discussing the work that needs to be done. One holds a tool, two seem to be conferring, and one of the two holds something that looks like design plans.

Those who see a pregnancy or baby in this card have told me that it is because the image is happening inside a church, so they think of baptism. Someone once said they thought the drawing being held by the character in front was actually a baptismal font. While I truly do not believe that is what A.E. Waite and Pamela Colman Smith planned for this image, there are ways one could legitimately interpret the Three of Pentacles as a pregnancy prediction.

We know that the Empress is card Three of the Major Arcana, and is related to the element of Earth. The Three of Pentacles is obviously also card Three, and an Earth card. In tarot numerology, Three is the number of production. Earth, of course, can be about physical things. So, numerically and elementally, the Three of Pentacles is very similar to the Empress. Isn’t it funny that people felt this Empress energy in the Three of Pentacles image without consciously thinking about the element and number?

At this point, you may be wondering how I see the Three of Pentacles, if I don’t think of either collaboration or pregnancy. In the Waite image, I see a craftsperson hired to do work for the church. He is standing on a stool with a tool while the two hiring him explain what they want him to do.

For me, the Three of Pentacles is about being fairly paid and recognized for your good work. I see this card as predicting or describing a great career or a special event, such as a promotion or a testimonial, in which skills are recognized and rewarded.

In Spiral Tarot, the Three of Pentacles is pictured as a prima donna ballerina taking a final bow. The audience has thrown flowers to signify their appreciation.

I see the Three of Pentacles as a master craftsman. I see this card as encouraging creative people to take their talent seriously and make a career of it.

The Crowley-Harris-Thoth keyword for this card is ‘Works’. I think this card tells us that we are capable of great works. In the Waite image, I think the craftsman is collaborating with the people who hired him. I also think that all great works require collaboration.
