Look for the Glimmers!

A glimmer is the opposite of a trigger. A glimmer gives us hope and joy when we need it. This week, we are looking for the glimmers!

I have learned a new word usage that I really like and want to share with you. We are all familiar with the concept of mental health triggers. Triggers are words, topics, thoughts, and images that can stimulate an unpleasant emotional reaction.

A glimmer is the opposite of a trigger. In this modern slang usage, a glimmer is something that stimulates a positive, hopeful, joyful emotional reaction.

A glimmer can be something that reminds you of a good thing that happened in the past. A glimmer can be something that feels uplifting for you in the moment.

We look for trigger warnings to avoid exposing ourselves to something that could hurt us or slow our healing.

What would happen if we started to look for glimmers? What are the signs of hope around us? What can you see, hear, find, or think about that could give you a momentary sense of joy?

What are things that reliably bring you cheer?

For me, looking for glimmers is a spiritual practice. I believe that the Universe sends us all sorts of signs. Sometimes we want to interpret those signs as a specific piece of advice. I worry that we often interpret these signs based on our fears and desires. We think hope is about getting what we want and avoiding what we don’t want.

I think it can be helpful to find the glimmers of joy and embrace the energy of hope without tightly defining what the realization of that hope might look like. The more that our glimmers allow us not only to hope but also to trust, the more uplifted we can be.

StaarCon 2024 is excited to welcome some of the most well-known and well-loved teachers and creators to share their wisdom with us. We are also happy to discover those who are new to our international community with something great to share.

Her presentation “Strega Strategies” at StaarCon 2023 was inspiring and enlightening. We are so excited that Teri has agreed to join us in 2024, and we cannot wait to learn more from her!

Which Tarot Cards Speak of Hope?

While we can find hope in any tarot card and any tarot reading, some cards specifically offer a hopeful message. Some cards, like the Star and the Nine of Cups, are obviously hopeful.

Many other cards can be interpreted in a hopeful way, depending on the context in which they appear.

Here are three tarot cards not typically associated with hope that can sometimes surprise you with a hopeful message.

The Four of Pentacles is often associated with selfishness and miserly behavior. Yet, the Four of Pentacles offers a hopeful message when it can be interpreted to encourage healthy boundaries and good self-care.

The Moon is traditionally a card of mystery, treachery, and hidden enemies. Yet, it is also a card that encourages our psychic development and spiritual growth.

The Seven of Pentacles in the Waite-Smith Tarot is associated with the Irish Potato Famine. Yet, it can also be an admonition to tend your garden with care in anticipation of a harvest.

When we look at these three cards, we can understand that many, most, or all tarot cards can speak of hope in some way. As an exercise, pull a card at random. No matter what the card is, find a way to see a hopeful message for yourself within it.

The Week in Review

Tonight on my YouTube channel I will teach a free livestream tarot class. The class is Tarot Spread Techniques. Join us, or watch the replay, and learn great ways to create, perform, and interpret tarot spreads.

From Around the Web

Listen to a radio show about tarot in Connecticut from Connecticut Public Radio. You may know that I got my start as a tarot reader in Connecticut!

Back in 2014, James Ricklef shared a three-card tarot spread for finding hope. This spread is a perfect fit for our topic this week.

I am so excited to see that so many new people are coming to tarot meetups and joining tarot groups. If you are new to tarot and looking for a tarot resource, Joan Bunning’s Learning the Tarot website is amazing!

Creation and Divination

When we look for hopeful signs and joyful reminders in our day-to-day lives, we will undoubtedly find them. We can also find these signs within our tarot decks.

Use your creativity to ask questions and interpret cards to give you the glimmer you need. This requires advanced tarot skills because of the specific context of the question.

For example, suppose you asked for something that would give you a sense of joy, and you received the Three of Swords. How can you interpret the Three of Swords in a way that gives you a joyful moment? You might place the sorrow of the Three of Swords in the past and find joy in the healing you have accomplished. You might see the swords in the image as hard truths you are embracing and find joy in your capacity.

What if you receive a card typically associated with joy or happiness? That can also be challenging because a card with the keyword ‘joy’ will not bring a moment of joy simply because of its keyword. You must dive more deeply into the card to find a specific joyful message for yourself.

This exercise utilizes your creativity and strengthens your tarot skills as you find glimmers within your tarot deck.

To Be the Bigger Person

This week we explore ways to handle difficult people, and how tarot helps us do that.

AdobeStock_398730006-2500x1750.jpg

When we speak of ‘being the bigger person’, we are not speaking of body weight or size. ‘Being the bigger person’ is an expression that speaks of magnanimity, compassion, and forgiveness.

Being the bigger person means that we do not respond to pettiness, rudeness, or immaturity in kind.

Most of us were raised to believe that there is inherent moral goodness in being the bigger person. It can also be in our own best interest to be generous and compassionate. When our personal brand includes a reputation for rising above petty behaviors, there are rewards. We earn the trust and respect of those around us.

Sometimes it feels draining to always be the one to have to rise above the bad behavior of others.

“Why do I always have to be the bigger person?”

“Must I give a pass to this sort of behavior?”

These are questions that arise at the tarot table quite often.

It is understandable to be frustrated with the bad behavior of others. It is normal to struggle against the desire to fight fire with fire.

There is a deeper issue here, too. Being the bigger person should not mean being forced to tolerate abuse. Being the bigger person does not mean allowing others to push past our boundaries.

There is a certain amount of strategy involved in deciding how we need to react to insult, overstepping, or unfair behavior. It matters who the perpetrator is to us. Their intentions matter, and their capability to understand the harm they have caused matters.

Sometimes we need to be the bigger person because we simply are the bigger person. We can take spiritual comfort in the fact that we have a greater capacity for kindness and understanding than some other people do.

Sometimes being the bigger person means having the courage to stand up to a bully, come to someone’s defense, or call out a harmful behavior.

Sometimes strategy dictates that we pick the reaction that is likely to give us the best outcome.

What it means to be the bigger person may change according to the situation. Yet, there is one thing that never changes. That is our need to be clear about the motivation for our own responses. When we need to respond to something unpleasant, we need to check in with our higher self. Are we being reactive, or proactive? Are we acting out of hurt, or out of wisdom?

What is the best possible outcome for this situation, and how can we achieve that?

In the end, that is what it means to be the bigger person.

Tarot Helps Us Do the Right Thing

When we have a moral quandary and are not sure how to respond to a difficult interpersonal situation, tarot can help!

It is a good practice to ask helpful questions of the cards, and to pull a single card, or a few cards, to answer each question.

When the issue is with a person, you might ask questions about what is motivating that person, or the best way to hand that person.

You might ask questions about what the best possible outcome is, and how to achieve that outcome.

You might even as a question as general as “What is the right thing for me to do in this situation?”

If you are feeling sad, angry, or bitter, you can ask the cards for ways to process your feelings.

Cards for Your Consideration

Which tarot card might ask us to be the bigger person? I think there are many! Major Arcana 8, Strength, comes to mind as a card of compassion. The Six of Pentacles might tell us to be charitable.

There are also cards which tell us to have good boundaries, such as the Seven of Wands and the Four of Pentacles.

Justice, the Ace of Swords, and the Knight of Swords tell us to do the right thing. Sometimes the right thing means standing up, sometimes it means drawing a boundary, and sometimes it means being gracious and forgiving.

Compassionate Detachment

The mindset that creates a great psychic reading can help anyone interact with others more effectively.

AdobeStock_185701570-2500x1667.jpg

Compassionate Detachment

We all need boundaries.

Years ago, I coined the term “compassionate detachment” to describe the state of mind that a good tarot reader must maintain in order to access intuition, help people, and stay healthy. Over time I have come to realize that this state of mind is actually necessary for everyone, not only those who work closely with others, or who engage in the psychic arts.

Getting to the mental space of compassionate detachment isn’t easy. You have to start from a place of compassion for all people.

Let that sink in for a moment; that’s ALL people. That’s not just people you like, or people who are kind to you, or people who act in a way that pleases you, or people who believe what you believe, or people who haven’t hurt you; that’s everybody.

The easiest way for me to get to that state of mind isn’t by being logical or rational, it’s by focusing on my heart chakra and sending my breath there. It’s a meditative process. Try this exercise so you can see what I mean.

Focus on your breathing. Make your breath as full and as deep as possible. Then, turn your attention, and with it, your breath, to your heart. Picture that you are breathing directly into your heart. With each inhalation, as your chest expands with air, feel your heart expand with love. Imagine that your heart is growing bigger and bigger, just like the Grinch’s heart does in How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

With each exhalation, release the anger, fear and hurt that has built up in your heart.

Then, as you breathe in, focus on holding compassion for all people. Understand that hurt people hurt people, and that those who have hurt you, and those who have hurt the people you love, and those who make decisions with which you do not agree, may be acting out of their own lack of love.

As you breathe in, feel gratitude for your own capacity to love. Recognize that you have enough love in your heart to share with those who haven’t enough.

Now, as you exhale, release your need to care about, or control, what happens next, in your life, and in the lives of those you care about.

Wait, doesn’t that sound like a contradiction?

Of course, we need to care about ourselves, and about others. Of course, we need to be engaged in our future, and the future of our planet. But for this one moment, release your need to care and control. Breathe in love, and as you breathe out, release your attachments. Recognize that you can pray, hope and wish for good things, without being attached to the outcome. Know that in this one moment, all that matters is your breath, and your ability to hold love for all.

As you breathe, come to a place where you can trust that whatever happens, the world will continue to turn. Come to a place where you can trust yourself, no matter what happens.

Now, affirm your right to say no to whatever doesn’t feel good and right to you. As you breathe in, feel your own power to make decisions for yourself. As you breathe out, release any attachment to the opinions of other people. As you exhale, let your breath surround you to create around your energy field a boundary of safety and protection.

It is from this loving, detached, protected place that we are best able to help others, and to help ourselves.

Boundaries are super important. So many of us feel guilty when we say no. Yet, we feel even worse when we let people walk all over us. It is impossible to be a compassionate person without maintaining healthy boundaries.

When someone tries to make you feel guilty, hold them in compassion, detach from your desire to please them, and keep your boundaries firm. Forgive people for their manipulation, but, at the same time, don’t let yourself be manipulated. Recognize that your boundaries serve not only to make you safe, but also to make safe the very people who try to push past them. When you stop another person from hurting you, you are helping them as much as you are helping yourself.

Practice this meditative breathing exercise and remember to use compassionate detachment in your interactions with people. This will make you more effective, healthier and happier, no matter the nature of your relationships with others.

Mercury Retrograde in Leo and Cancer

This summer’s Mercury retrograde is from July 7 through August 2. Its shadow is felt for two weeks prior, and two weeks after. Each Mercury retrograde is different, and this one has some particularly interesting qualities. We will experience its energies playing out nationally and internationally as the drama of Leo collides with the sensitivity of Cancer, while Mercury retrograde’s tendency for miscommunication could reflect many of us feeling thrown into a righteous tizzy over small things that seem to take on an overblown sense of importance. The emotionally charged reactions to a Disney movie, and the misremembered history that made airports central to revolutionary war strategy give us a small taste of what could be in store for us over the next few weeks.

I’ll leave politics, arts, and culture to the pundits. My job during this summer’s Mercury Retrograde is to help you make the most of the opportunity this time affords you. This particular Mercury retrograde is a time to heal your heart, soothe your soul, and remember who you are. This summer, you can learn to use your energy where you can be most effective, release unnecessary drama and emotional attachments from your life, and harness your creativity in a way that will bring you lasting success and satisfaction.

I’ve developed a special tarot session at a special price to help you work with the unique energies available during this Mercury Retrograde. Your Summer 2019 Mercury Retrograde session is a half hour in length, and available at the discounted price of $50. During this time, we will work together to help you remember who you are and what is important to you, reclaim your creativity, release your attachments and motivate you to move forward on your important projects.

A Mercury Retrograde session with me is only available July 7 through August 2. Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for healing and insight! Call or text 561-655-1160 to book yours!

The Week in Review

This week I was happy to review a really interesting new tarot book, Tarot for Troubled Times, by Shaheen Miro and Theresa Reed. You can read the review on my website.

This article uses different words to describe compassionate detachment, but the ideas are the same. Check out these 10 Rules for Reading Tarot for a Friend.

Cards for Your Consideration

This week let’s consider some alternative meanings for two cards. Both of these alternative meanings have become operative in my reading practice. Once I saw these possibilities for these cards, I couldn’t unsee them.

The first is Major Arcana Eight, Strength. Typically pictured as a woman and a lion, we often see this card as affirmation of our own strength to bear what we must and do what we need to do. This can be a card of tempering our wild nature, and that is where my preferred meaning comes in to play. The woman has tamed the lion not with brute force, but with love. Because of this, one of my favorite keywords for Strength is compassion. We must have the strength that the woman has, to recognize the lion’s wild nature, and not fear it. We must recognize our own inner lion, yet when that lion wants to roar, we very often must subdue its angry nature, and instead respond with gentleness.

The second card is the Four of Pentacles. Widely known as the card of the miser, this is often interpreted as selfishness, or a need for frugality. Very often, though, the Four of Pentacles can instruct us to be self-full, and to keep good boundaries. Many times, this card figures prominently in readings for people who come from families with poor boundaries. This card advises us to keep healthy boundaries without guilty or regret.

The next time you see these cards in a reading, consider if these interpretations might add value to your reading!

The Power of Self-Care

Make your own self-care a priority, and join the free Card Reading Magic telesummit!

In medicine, self-care is the regimen a patient must follow on their own.

In personal healing, self-care includes anything you do with the intention of taking care of your well-being, whether body, mind or spirit.

Sometimes I find that my need to take care of my body feels at odds with a perceived need to take care of my spirit with chocolate cake!

In many cultures, and especially here in the United States, people seem to take pride in denying themselves care. Perhaps we feel we appear stronger if we do not admit to needing care.

Often, we pack our lives with so many commitments that we can’t seem to find the resources to focus on our own self-care.

In reality, self-care is good time management. The better we feel, the more efficiently we use our time.

Taking time for self-care is also an enforced break from our routine. That, in itself, has value.

There are many possible self-care activities. Exercise, massage, cooking, yoga, tarot, gardening, meditation, journaling, dancing, socializing, spa treatment, ceremony and playing music could all be considered self-care. As you can see, some activities take time and money, others can easily be incorporated in to daily life.

Whatever you invest in your own self-care will be returned to you many times over.

Body, Mind and Spirit Self-Care Spread

Here’s an easy three-card spread designed to help you understand your self-care needs and habits.

Simply pull one card for Body, one for Mind and one for Spirit.

Interpret the card in each position in context of your need for self-care in that area.

Perhaps a card might indicate a self-care activity that would be helpful. Perhaps a card my reveal a particular resistance to self-care. Maybe a card would congratulate you on your approach to self-care in that area.

Perform this spread on a regular basis as a way of making sure you are showing up for yourself.

The Four of Pentacles Urges Self-Care

Many people see the Four of Pentacles as selfishness. Eden Gray called this the “Card of the Miser”.

Modern tarotists often see the Four of Pentacles as depicting a “lack mentality”.

All of these can be appropriate interpretations of the Four of Pentacles.

At the same time, there is another interpretation that works for this card, and can sometimes shed new light into a reading.

Sometimes, we can interpret the Four of Pentacles as advice for self-full-ness, rather than a warning against selfishness.

The Four of Pentacles can advise us to hold better boundaries, or to make our own needs a priority.

Sometimes, we feel selfish when we are really being appropriately self-full. The Four of Pentacles asks us to contemplate this balance in our lives.
