Six is the First Perfect Number
This week we take a deep dive into the power and meaning of the number Six.
Welcome to Volume 6, Issue 6 of the Tarot Topics Weekly Newsletter. Given the sixes this week, I thought it would be fun to do a deep dive into the number Six, and its meaning in different traditions, as well as in tarot.
To be honest, whenever I think of the number Six, I think first of the poem, Now We Are Six, from the book of the same name by A.A. Milne, the creator of Winnie the Pooh. I still have that poem memorized. While I doubt the author had the divinatory study of numbers in mind when he wrote it, the poem does a good job giving some possible basic meanings for the six numerals, ending with, “But now I am six, I'm as clever as clever. So I think I'll be six now for ever and ever.”
The Pythagoreans felt that Six symbolized high ideals.
They also pointed out that Six is the first perfect number. Mathematically, a perfect number is a positive integer that equals the sum of its proper divisors, excluding the number itself. Six is the lowest of these perfect numbers, and therefore the first.
Perhaps there are metaphysical ways in which Six is also the first perfect number. When I was first learning tarot, I learned Three as the number of first fruits, Four as the number of comfort and safety, Five as the number of expansion, and Six as the number of victory. From this perspective, Six would be the first number to express complete success.
In Kabbalah, Six is Tiphereth, or Beauty. The Chaldeans heralded the number Six as caring and giving.
When we dig into the meanings of the number Six in different traditions, we find some common themes emerge. Those themes include family, nurturance, connections, and reciprocity.
This, along with the concept of victory as I first learned, is helpful to consider when we look at the Six cards in tarot.
The Lovers, of course, is a card about relationships. The Six of Cups is about our childhood, and our relationship with the past. The Six of Pentacles is about sharing, the Six of Swords is about forward motion, and the Six of Wands is about victory after battle.
Within each of these cards we can find beauty, connections, family, victory, and, in each, a certain kind of perfection.
If Six is your birth number, or life path number, you are likely to be a nurturing and caring person, and one who works to build connections to friends, family, and community.
In all systems of divination, I am fascinated by the unlikely but perfect marriage of science and myth, logic and intuition, systems and random. We can see the relationships of diviner and tool, human and spirit, and reader and querent in the number Six as well, and in all the Six tarot cards.
The StaarCorner

Tarot Exercise with the Tarot Sixes
Here is a way to get to know the tarot Sixes a bit better. There are six (no kidding) tarot cards associated with the number Six. Take them out of your deck. They are The Lovers, The Devil, the Six of Swords, the Six of Wands, the Six of Cups, and the Six of Pentacles.
In the lead article in this newsletter, we learned a few keywords associated with the divinatory meaning of the number Six. Look at each of these cards and determine the ways in which the following keywords describe each of these cards.
Relationships
Connections
Beauty
Victory
Can you find each of these keywords in each of these cards?

StaarCon presenter Marion Kirk has shared a great new blogpost about saying ‘no’ as a tarot reader. If you read for others, either casually or professionally, you need to see this!
The first Tarot Blog Hop of 2023 is out! It’s wrangled by Kimberly Essex. You can check out the theme, and then follow the master list to see what five tarot bloggers had to say about the topic of beginning again.
Of course, it had to happen, and Teen Vogue has the story. There is a new tarot deck inspired by Taylor Swift called The Taylor Tarot!
Creation and Divination
Do you have a way of expressing your creativity that involves divination? Send me your poems, your art, your stories, and your crowdfunding links!
This week I will share poems that I wrote for two of the four Minor Arcana Six cards. Where or not one is a good poet, the act of writing about each card strengthens our understanding of the card, and our connection to the energy of the card.
Six of Cups
The journey back home before journey’s end
Memories shared, a reunion of friends.
Honored history and those who have passed
Looking with longing at what didn’t last.
When the sweetness of youth joins the great march of time
Some things will decay, but some things still shine.
Six of Swords
Silent on the waters slipping into the black night
An angel guides this journey toward the distant shore's true light.
Rising above turbulence with intent both calm and clear
Higher thought commands this boat, and the stars by which to steer.
Navigation born of science, and logic points the way
Leaving stormy seas behind as you sail toward the new day.

Looking Back and Moving Forward
This is a sacred time, when we remember the past and look to the future.
It is the first week of a brand-new year!
January is a special month for me because of StaarCon, now just a few weeks away. As we focus on producing StaarCon, this newsletter will be slightly abbreviated. Look for new features in February!
At this time of year, we often spend time looking at the past, whether with nostalgia, fondness, regret, or grief. At the very same time, we are looking forward, making plans, resolutions, and intentions.
To stand in a specific point of time and look both backward and forward can be a sacred thing. We can honor the past and learn from it. The past reminds us that the present moment is fleeting and precious. We can plan, hope, dream, and manifest for the future, all in this single sacred moment.
Our spiritual practices of mindfulness, meditation, yoga, and divination can help us as we learn from the past and create the future. In tarot, the Six of Cups often speaks of the past. The Two of Wands can speak of setting plans and goals. But which card helps us to remember the present moment? Perhaps all seventy-eight cards, the whole of tarot, can help us stay present and mindful, especially at this sacred time of looking back and forward .
The StaarCorner
Whether you join us in person or online, StaarCon 2023 has so much to offer. With over fifty presentations, great shopping opportunities, and great community, StaarCon 2023 can be a life-changing experience for you.
The presentations you attend live, whether in person or online, will be a wonderful opportunity to learn and interact with your community. The recordings of classes you missed that you view during the AfterGlow will allow you to learn at your own pace.
This fully hybrid conference really offers the best of both worlds.
You can join us for one, two, or all three days. The lounge events during the AfterGlow are open to all ticketholders!

Two Cards for the New Year
At this time of year, it is powerful to do both tarot divination and tarot manifestation. An easy way to think about the difference between these two techniques is this. When you divine with tarot, you pull cards face down, at random. When you manifest with tarot, you pull cards face up, consciously choosing the cards whose energy you want to manifest or remove.
The two cards for the new year are simple. The first card is what you want to leave behind in 2022. The second card is what you want to welcome in 2023.
If you do this as a divination by pulling the cards at random, you are letting the universe guide you and give you your focus. If you do this by choosing the cards face up, you are making a conscious decision, and using the energy of tarot to help you manifest your goals.
Try both these techniques this week. Use the full potential of tarot to give your year a great start!

What Never Stops
Time is always passing, and always changing us. Yet some things remain eternal.
I have a big birthday coming up this fall. It’s one of those numbers that ends in zero and feels impossible. At the very same time, I am having so much fun with my new grandbabies, who are now no longer preemies, and are developing and growing and learning every day.
All this has me thinking about the different stages of life, what changes, what ends, and, maybe most importantly, the things that never stop.
There are so many differences between people of different ages. Yet, there are some things that can and should go on forever in our lives.
I get frustrated with people who use age as an excuse to refuse to learn new things, when our curiosity and ability to learn and grow (absent of cognitive decline, of course) should never stop.
I feel sad for people who have stopped feeling love for their partners, when our ability to love never stops, and has the potential to deepen over time.
I can tell you that as I grow older, I have no desire, and no plans, to stop the work I do, which is so important to me and defining of my life.
Of course, there are some things we smartly and logistically become too old to do. There is a privilege that comes with each age which allows us to relinquish certain thoughts, responsibilities, and activities. Beyond that, though, I am much more interested in the things that bring us so much joy they never stop, and we never want them to stop.
What are the things that never stop for most of us? Our love of family, our enjoyment of nature, our creativity, and our inspiration. For some of us, our work. For others, travel.
What are the things you never want to stop doing and enjoying?
Whatever our current age, the more we focus on our eternal and ongoing passions, the more engaged and vital will be, for as long as we live.
The StaarCorner
We are super excited that Kooch Daniels will be presenting at StaarCon. Kooch studied numerology with Sri Harish Johari. She has been a professional tarot reader for many years.
Her presentation at StaarCon will be “Finding Tarot Secrets in Your Birthdate”.
This hands-on combination of tarot and numerology will be interesting and approachable for diviners of all skill levels.
Kooch is an author who has presented at many conferences, including The Reader’s Studio. We are delighted that she will be joining us at StaarCon 2023.
Tickets are now available. You may join us in person in West Palm Beach or online on Accelevents.
What to Keep, and What to Let Go
As we get older, there is always the question of what to keep and what to let go. This process starts when we are toddlers and continues throughout life. If there is an activity, relationship, or ideal that we think we might be outgrowing, tarot can help us determine whether we need to lean in or let go. We can simply think of the thing in question, and pull some cards to see what value, or what danger, it holds for us going forward.
We can also, at any time, perform a simple two-card spread. Let the first card be what happens if you let something go, and the second card be what happens if you keep it.

This week I am teaching two free classes on YouTube. Last night I finished my Major Arcana series with the Final Seven Cards. You can watch the replay if you missed it! Tomorrow night we will explore how Venn diagrams help us understand tarot.

Erika Robinson shared a recent blogpost that is poignant, instructive, and an altogether great read.
Guidance on the Journey
There are many tarot cards that help us understand our relationship to time. For example, the Hermit and Temperance can both remind us to take our time, and to be patient.
The Six of Cups may speak of nostalgia, or a longing for the past. In some contexts, the Six of Cups could remind us of the essence of who we are, no matter how much time has passed.
The Knight of Pentacles may speak of the slow passage of time. The Knight of Swords and the Eight of Wands may both recommend swift action and speak of things that happen quickly. The Wheel of Fortune and the Eight of Pentacles may both speak of things that repeat time after time.
What cards might speak of the things that do not change and do not stop over time? I think this is a very personal question because it could be different for everyone. It is interesting to note, however, that the infinity symbol, or lemniscate, appears on four different cards in the Waite Smith Tarot. Those cards are the Magician, Strength, the World, and the Two of Pentacles. Perhaps these cards may give us a clue about the things that remain eternal for us all.

Connecting with Your Inner Child
Inner child work helps us to heal from early trauma. When we connect with our inner child, we can remember who we are, and move forward with the energy that made us joyful in your youth. We can move forward without the burden of our traumas. Tarot can help us in this process.
In modern psychology, ‘inner child work’ is an approach created by Carl Jung. With inner child work we recognize childhood trauma in order to heal as adults.
Most people realize that many of our fears, difficulties, and unpleasant patterns in our adult lives stem from what we learned, witnessed, and experienced during childhood. I often say that many of us spend most of our lives recovering from the first twenty years.
Those who grew up in seriously dysfunctional families, or who had health issues or upheaval due to tragedy are aware of their childhood trauma. Those who had more idyllic childhoods often do not recognize that they, too, have childhood trauma. They, therefore, may find it harder to do the inner child work that could help them in their adult lives.
I also believe that we can connect with our inner child to find our sense of personal identity, authenticity, and purpose by identifying the things we naturally did and enjoyed as children.
So many people I speak with are longing to understand who they are, what makes them happy, and what makes them feel that they are living a meaningful and purposeful life. I believe that inner child work can help all of us remember who we are.
There are many ways to do inner child work. You can engage a therapist to help you. You can write your inner child a letter. You can do a meditation where you communicate with your inner child.
Many of us in the divination community are exploring ways that divination can assist us as we work to connect with, and give voice to, the inner child.

Giving Voice to Your Inner Child
One way to do inner child work with tarot is to allow your inner child to speak through tarot.
You can do this simply by asking the right questions and interpreting the card that appears in the context of that question.
Here are some questions to get you started.
What is a childhood trauma that needs to be healed?
What is something my inner child wants me to know?
What is something I enjoyed as a child that has become an important part of my identity?
How can I be more playful?
How can I honor my inner child at this time?
See Me in the Northeast
I will be available for private readings by appointment in Madison, Connecticut, and house calls and psychic house parties in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New York, beginning May 26 and ending June 5. To schedule with me, please call or text 561-655-1160.
On June 5th at 6:30 pm I will be teaching a tarot class at True Bikram Yoga. This class is available in person in Madison and online on Zoom. You can learn more and sign up for this class online on the True Bikram Yoga website.

Guidance on the Journey
Which tarot cards might instruct us to work with our inner child, to honor our inner child, or to listen to our inner child?
In context, any tarot card might give voice to the feelings and needs of the inner child. Yet, there are a few cards that could appear in any reading, at any time, and beckon you to do the work to connect to your inner child.
Here are some of them.
The Fool asks you to honor your inner child.
The Sun asks you to be fearless in your joy, just as a child does.
The Pages ask you to remember the desires of your youth, and who you have always been.
The Six of Cups asks you to remember and revisit your childhood.
The Ten of Cups and the Ten of Pentacles can speak of your family, and your childhood home.
