Sparklers in the shape of the numbers 2023 in a glass container at the beach.

This is the last newsletter of 2022. Next week you can expect a new feature as we update Tarot Topics for 2023.

I want to thank you for being a part of my world over this past year. I hope it has been a good year for you, and I wish you and your family all good things in the coming year.

I am excited for a new year, for StaarCon 2023, for new offerings on my YouTube channel, and the fulfillment of some long-term projects. I hope that over the course of this new year you and I will have a chance to work together with readings, mentorship, or classes.

I love New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. I love the hope inherent in a new year, the opportunity for a fresh start, and the celebration of the accomplishments of the year gone by.

On New Year’s Eve the entire world does magic together as we all bid goodbye to the old and welcome the new.

May the magic of this time bring you closer to your goals, closer to your loved ones, and closer to your own authentic happiness and wellbeing.

Happy New Year!

Tarot for a New Year

Numerology creates a specific Major Arcana tarot card for each year. 2023 is the year of the Chariot. We will be contemplating what this means during a few sessions at StaarCon 2023. In the meantime, it is good to ask yourself what the Chariot means to you at this time, and how this card can guide you during the year.

A few years ago, I created a process for entering a new year called LEAP, which involves some deep work and introspection. Out of that process comes a tarot spread that I will share with you here.

This is an eight-card spread, based on the letters in the word ‘leap’. Use this spread to help you leap into 2023.

Pull one card for each question.

Learn: What do I need to know about myself and my life as I enter 2023?

Evolve: How can I leave hurtful patterns and shift into a new way of thinking?

Activate: How can I awaken the spiritual gifts within myself?

Participate: How can I show up for myself?

Lighten up:  How can I find the healing and power in humor, laughter and letting go?

Energize: What is my source of strength and limitless energy?

Attune: How do I hear my guidance from spirit?

Prosper: How do I create, accept, and expect my success?

Always a Journey

This week I share some thoughts as I travel throughout the Northeast on Tarot Tour. Life is always a journeys and never a destination.

A woman walking down a grassy path

We use the word ‘journey’ to talk about travel. We also use this word to discuss a metaphoric journey, such as our educational journey or our journey with an illness.

Poets, philosophers, and songwriters have written about life as a journey.

I think this is a good way to think about life. Rather than cataloging our mistakes and heartbreaks, we can see each difficulty and each joy as an important part of our journey.

Ralph Waldo Emerson is credited with the well-known expression, “life is a journey, not a destination”. While setting goals is good, the only goal we are sure we will meet is to be present on the journey.

When we remember that life is always a journey, we remember that travel is sometimes arduous, sometimes smooth, sometimes fun, and sometimes educational. We can be prepared for whatever we might encounter on the road ahead.

The Fool tarot card

The Fool’s Journey is Your Journey

When we learn tarot, we often speak of the cards as “The Fool’s Journey”. This term was coined by Eden Gray in the late 1960s. The concept that the Fool is the star of the story told by tarot, and the other seventy-seven cards represent the experiences and lessons along the Fool’s Path is now considered a primary way of understanding tarot.

We can learn a lot about our own journeys in life by studying the Fool’s journey.

Sometimes divination and study can go hand in hand.

Shuffle your tarot deck. Ask for a card that helps you understand something about your journey in life. Pull one card at random. Think about what the Fool learns from that card. Then consider how that card makes sense on your own journey.

What the Court Cards Want You to Know

On Wednesday, June 29, 7 pm to 9 pm, join us for a hybrid tarot class about the tarot Court cards. You can attend in Person in Palm City or online on Zoom.

The sixteen Court cards, typically called Pages, Knights, Queens and Kings, can be some of the most confusing cards in the tarot deck.

This is because these cards are very versatile. They can reference the people around you. They can also reference parts of yourself. They can behave like any other tarot card and offer advice, comment, and prediction.

In this two-hour class you will learn easy ways to understand and work with these sixteen cards.

You can join us in person or online. Every student will receive access to a recording of the class. Visit EventBrite to purchase your ticket.

The class will be available at cardandcraftacademy.com after July 8th.

Visit christianagaudet.com for more information!

The Chariot tarot card

Guidance on the Journey

Can tarot cards that traditionally reference travel also be interpreted to represent the journey through life, or any metaphoric journey? I would say yes, though some more than others.

For me, the Chariot is a card that often indicates travel. All four Knights can speak of travel as well. The World can speak of international travel.

Traditionally, some people see the Six of Swords as travel, as well as the Eight of Cups. I am less likely to interpret those cards as a literal trip.

The card that most often will speak to me of the journey of life, or a metaphoric journey, is the Fool.

Which cards often speak to you of travel? Which cards indicate a need to view life as a journey, or to focus on a metaphoric journey? How much overlap exists for you between these groups of cards?

When it comes to how the cards speak to each of us, we all have our own personal relationship with each card. Yet, we will all have cards in our personal tarot vocabulary that reference each aspect of life. Literal travel and metaphoric journeys are often themes in tarot readings, even if the cards that express these things may differ from reader to reader.

When we discuss literal travel in a reading, we might be predicting a vacation, or a business trip. When we discuss a metaphoric journey we may be using the cards to help frame a chapter in life in order to find ways to cope, or ways to make the most of a specific undertaking.

Little Bites

We solve big problems a little at a time.

AdobeStock_292539831-2500x1674.jpg

You may have heard the Chinese proverb that “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step’”.

This week at the tarot table I have talked with so many people who are feeling overwhelmed, for a variety of reasons.

Though their situations were different, the ultimate question was the same.

“How do I handle this?”

While the cards had specific and individual advice for each person, they all each received a similar message as well. That message is a bit of wisdom that is good for all of us to remember.

When facing a daunting task, don’t tackle it all at once. Don’t get ahead of yourself in figuring out how you are going to manage the things that will come in the future. Look at what is on your plate today, right now, and take it in manageable little bites.

Some people call it taking ‘baby steps.’ I don’t love that analogy. Babies take small, wobbly, faltering steps because they don’t know how to walk. Addressing something that feels overwhelming in little bites takes wisdom and mastery.

It is easy to feel overwhelmed when we look at the whole of a thing, whether that thing is starting a business, catching up on piled up work, going through a divorce, or healing from a loss. Yet, when we focus simply on one task at a time, our mission becomes bearable and doable.

It can take some finesse to figure out what the little bites are, and what in what order they must be done. That’s where divination, counseling, or a trusted expert can help.

It’s important to remember this, too. The bigger the task, the better the reward will be when we get through it. When we are suffering, it is hard to consider that there will come a time when we will feel joy once more. When we are overwhelmed, it is hard to know that there will come a time when we will be able to relax. Yet, when we chew through our difficultly in little bites, eventually we will get to the other side of it.

Learning Tarot in Little Bites

One task that can seem daunting is learning the seventy-eight cards of tarot, and then learning the intricate art of seeing how those cards work together in a reading. There is so much to know and remember, even beyond what we must intuit.

Like most daunting tasks, the best way to learn tarot is in little bites. Here are three ways to do that.

Card of the Day (COTD)

Every day, preferably at the same time, draw a card at random. Look up its meaning in numerous sources, look at the image, thing about what the card might mean to you in this current moment, and other ways this card may have spoken to you at other times in your life. Journal about the card. Later on, look back and see how this card was reflected in your day or week in ways you might not have expected.

Tarot in Sections

Learn tarot one section at a time. You can start with the Majors only. Learn these twenty-two cards and do readings with only these cards. Then you can learn the Minors either by suit or by number. When you feel comfortable with a new section, add them in to your readings. Eventually you will be reading with the full deck.

One Card a Week

Put your tarot deck in order. Each week, starting with the Fool and moving forward in order from there, study one card. See how the energy of that card shows up over the course of the week. During the week, read everything you can about that card, and work to form your own understanding of it. After seventy-eight weeks, you will have a very clear understanding of the tarot cards.

Cards for Your Consideration

When confronting overwhelming tasks, the Sevens of tarot offer a great deal of wisdom and insight.

In tarot, I see the number Seven as related to the journey of the individual, and the journey within. These cards each describe something we can do for ourselves that no one else can do for us.

The Seven of Cups reminds us to use our imagination to consider what is available to us and warns us against fearful imaginings.

The Seven of Wands reminds us that we are able to multi-task, and strong enough to stand against multiple attacks and superior odds.

The Seven of Pentacles instructs us to tend our garden tirelessly, knowing that it will one day bear fruit.

The Seven of Swords asks us to be on the alert against treachery, but also remind us to think craftily to solve our problems.

The Chariot affirms that we are the masters of our destiny, and able to bring together what we need to move forward.

You Don't Have to Fit in to Be Comfortable

Being different isn't always easy.

AdobeStock_313458532-2500x1667.jpg

Something that I often see at the tarot table is that many people feel that they just don’t fit in with the people around them. This can happen in the workplace, the neighborhood, or even amongst folks who gather around a shared interest or concern. Some people even feel that they don’t fit in with their own family of origin.

People often describe this feeling of not fitting as uncomfortable and awkward. Many of us remember being teenagers and trying to fit in with a particular group of kids, sometimes to the point of doing things we knew we shouldn’t do. Never did that work out very well!

There is only one solution to this problem of feeling different than the people who are around you. That solution is deceptively simple.

Just be okay with who you are, and the fact that you are different. Find ways to appreciate the people around you, even though they are different than you. Hold appreciation for the things about you that make you unique.

The more you can appreciate your own differences, as well as those who are different from you, the more comfortable you will be with those around you.

Remember that being different isn’t bad. Own and celebrate the things that make you different and unique. The space that you hold within your workplace, or family, or friend group, is even more important because of your uniqueness. It means that you can’t be easily replaced.

Sometimes we are made to feel uncomfortable because our differences cause others to be uncomfortable with us. As hard as that it, the solution is to lean in a bit more, and let people get to know us. It is in that process that we become able to find common ground, even with those who aren’t very much like us at all.

I had an aunt who used to say something very wise. “It would be a pretty boring world if everyone were all the same,” she would tell me. Those words have always been a key to being comfortable being myself, especially around people who are different from me.

Cards for Your Consideration

There are a few cards in tarot that speak of integration and fitting together. Sometimes these cards can describe a process of making something work. Sometimes they can talk about that awkward feeling of finding ways to fit in with people who are different from you.

Of course, the Fool advises each of us to simply be who we are on our journey through life. Here are three other Major Arcana cards that can speak of the ways we integrate with others.

The Lovers

The Lovers is, very often, not about romantic love. Rather, it can speak to the process of integrating opposites, and seeing the difference between one thing (or person) and another.

The Chariot

If you look at the steeds on most Chariot images you will see a reference to opposites pulling together in unison in order to move forward. This reminds us of the importance of working together with different people.

Temperance

Temperance speaks of blending ingredients in order to make something bigger and better than the sum of its parts.

In moments when you feel that you are not fitting in, look to these cards to see the value of bringing your unique qualities to a group.
