Is Fear Fun?
Spooky stuff can be fun, but it also helps us process our real fears and traumas.
There are cultural traditions everywhere that involve having fun with scary things, as we do during Halloween. A lot of people enjoy scary movies and thrilling carnival rides at any time of year. Horror stories are some of the best-selling books each year. This is proof that many people enjoy being scared. Why is that?
I think people like spooky fun because there are so many truly scary things in life. Horror stories, haunted houses, and scary movies are clearly not real. Allowing ourselves to be scared in a safe environment, by something we know is not real, may give us strength to deal with our real fears, and to process our actual traumas.
Fear is an interesting thing to unpack. We all feel fear that hurts us and holds us back from doing the things we want and need to do. We also feel fear that protects us and helps us stay safe.
These sorts of real fears are not fun at all, and only some of them are necessary.
This Spooky Season is a great opportunity to think about the fear that we have that is not real and does not serve us. There is no better time to release the fear that holds us back, so we can fully step into our personal power.

StaarCon 2023 is January 20-22, with a thirty-day AfterGlow on Accelevents. During the AfterGlow all ticketholders will be able to view and review recordings of StaarCon 2023 presentations, attend scheduled events with StaarCon presenters, shop in the online expo and gather with friends in the StaarCon lounges.
This year I am particularly excited with the wide range of topics we will be covering at StaarCon. Whether you are a professional reader, an aspiring pro, an enthusiast, or a curious beginner, there will be plenty for you to learn, do, and experience. Beyond tarot, we will be exploring Lenormand, astrology, numerology, divination with natural objects, crystals, mediumship, and much more.
You can attend in person in West Palm Beach or online on Accelevents. You can join us for one day, two days, or the whole weekend. We hope to see you there!
Tarot for When We are Afraid
We often do a reading, either for ourselves or with a friend or professional, when we are afraid. Tarot will often be able to tell us if the thing we are afraid of will happen, and whether it will be as bad as we fear. Tarot can also tell us how to handle our anxiety, and, if necessary, how to get through a difficult time. Tarot can help us find meaning in difficulty, just as tarot can help assuage unnecessary fear.
Sometimes it is best not to ask tarot if the thing you fear will come to pass. Rather, it is often better to ask a question such as, “What do I need to do right now to help the situation?” or “How can I find the strength to deal with this?”
If there is a situation that I am unsure of, I often like to do a two-card spread. The first card is, “This is the best this situation can turn out to be”. The second card is “This is the worst this situation can turn out to be.” The cards that appear here can be quite enlightening.
If we are having a tough time, we can turn to the cards for comfort. You can simply ask the cards to give a comforting message and pull a card. See what comfort you can find in the image that appears.

Guidance on the Journey
Many misinformed people are afraid of tarot, and many people are afraid of specific tarot cards. There are cards that have names and images that can be scary. However, are there any tarot cards that truly advise us to be afraid?
The Fool asks us to take a leap of faith. When reversed, the Fool can be an admonition to be cautious. The Moon and Temperance can both advise caution. The Seven of Swords can warn of treachery.
In context, any card or card combination might warn against a specific action. But do any of these cards speak specifically of fear?
The Eight and Nine of Swords might speak of anxiety and worry. In these cards we can perhaps see fear. Yet very often these cards appear when we need to release anxiety and find a solution to our worry.
From my perspective, there are quite a few cards that speak of caution and patience. There does not seem to be a single card that advises or welcomes fear.
This may be a lesson we can learn from tarot. There are times that faith should outweigh fear. There are times to be careful. There are times to be on our guard. There are times we must confront our own worry. There are certainly things that we need to avoid. In life, the function of fear is to help us avoid things that can hurt us. The voice of tarot, however, does not usually seem to advise fear. Rather, it advises the wise decisions that safely move us forward.

The Temple Within
We can discover within ourselves a temple within we communicate with the divine.
The dictionary defines the word ‘temple’ as a building devoted to the worship, or regarded as the dwelling place, of a god or gods or other objects of religious reverence.
In many modern spiritual communities, we do not have actual buildings devoted solely to spiritual worship. Some churches meet in school auditoriums. Tarot gatherings happen in cafes and conference rooms.
We learn to create sacred space where and when we need it. We erect an energetic temple for our spiritual practice, whatever that may be, wherever that may be.
We can also do a great deal of spiritual growth and healing by creating sacred space within our mind’s eye.
Not everyone feels that they are good at visualization. Yet, with practice, we can all learn to activate our imagination and visualize the temple within.
The third eye, or brow chakra, is the seat of our eyesight, our intuition, and our imagination. We can enhance our ability to visualize by activating the brow chakra. Do this by breathing into the brow chakra, anointing the brow with oil (lemon, rosemary, and lavender are particularly good), or holding a crystal to the brow (amethyst and celestite are good choices).
In your mind’s eye, picture yourself walking toward your own sacred temple. Or picture yourself building your temple. With practice, you will be surprised by the details that appear. You will see and experience things that you do not consciously try to create.
A temple within is a place where you can find personal healing. It is a place where you can confer with your spirit guides. It is a place where you can meet with your loved ones in spirit. It is a place where you can manifest your journey forward.
October is the time to connect with our ancestors, and with our ancestral magic. There is no better time to work on finding, or building, your own internal sacred space.

The Fool is arguably the most powerful card in the tarot deck. This is because the Fool is the star of the story told by tarot. The Fool represents each one of us on our journey through life. The Fool beckons us to explore tarot, and to explore our own life’s journey.
We can use the Fool to help us on our inner journey of creative visualization, meditation, and manifestation.
Simply take your Fool card and look at it with a soft gaze. Imagine yourself as the Fool on your journey. Explore what it feels like to be the Fool. Where does this journey take you?

Always a Journey
This week I share some thoughts as I travel throughout the Northeast on Tarot Tour. Life is always a journeys and never a destination.
We use the word ‘journey’ to talk about travel. We also use this word to discuss a metaphoric journey, such as our educational journey or our journey with an illness.
Poets, philosophers, and songwriters have written about life as a journey.
I think this is a good way to think about life. Rather than cataloging our mistakes and heartbreaks, we can see each difficulty and each joy as an important part of our journey.
Ralph Waldo Emerson is credited with the well-known expression, “life is a journey, not a destination”. While setting goals is good, the only goal we are sure we will meet is to be present on the journey.
When we remember that life is always a journey, we remember that travel is sometimes arduous, sometimes smooth, sometimes fun, and sometimes educational. We can be prepared for whatever we might encounter on the road ahead.
See Me in the Tampa Bay Area
I will be in the Tampa Bay Area June 23 through June 27. During that time, I am available for house calls, psychic house parties, and private sessions by appointment at my AirBnB in Wesley Chapel.

Arwen will be presenting an interactive tarot workshop to help readers of all levels of experience find deeper meaning in their tarot interpretations.
Mark your calendar now for StaarCon 2023, January 20 through 22.
The Fool’s Journey is Your Journey
When we learn tarot, we often speak of the cards as “The Fool’s Journey”. This term was coined by Eden Gray in the late 1960s. The concept that the Fool is the star of the story told by tarot, and the other seventy-seven cards represent the experiences and lessons along the Fool’s Path is now considered a primary way of understanding tarot.
We can learn a lot about our own journeys in life by studying the Fool’s journey.
Sometimes divination and study can go hand in hand.
Shuffle your tarot deck. Ask for a card that helps you understand something about your journey in life. Pull one card at random. Think about what the Fool learns from that card. Then consider how that card makes sense on your own journey.

What the Court Cards Want You to Know
On Wednesday, June 29, 7 pm to 9 pm, join us for a hybrid tarot class about the tarot Court cards. You can attend in Person in Palm City or online on Zoom.
The sixteen Court cards, typically called Pages, Knights, Queens and Kings, can be some of the most confusing cards in the tarot deck.
This is because these cards are very versatile. They can reference the people around you. They can also reference parts of yourself. They can behave like any other tarot card and offer advice, comment, and prediction.
In this two-hour class you will learn easy ways to understand and work with these sixteen cards.
You can join us in person or online. Every student will receive access to a recording of the class. Visit EventBrite to purchase your ticket.
The class will be available at cardandcraftacademy.com after July 8th.
Guidance on the Journey
Can tarot cards that traditionally reference travel also be interpreted to represent the journey through life, or any metaphoric journey? I would say yes, though some more than others.
For me, the Chariot is a card that often indicates travel. All four Knights can speak of travel as well. The World can speak of international travel.
Traditionally, some people see the Six of Swords as travel, as well as the Eight of Cups. I am less likely to interpret those cards as a literal trip.
The card that most often will speak to me of the journey of life, or a metaphoric journey, is the Fool.
Which cards often speak to you of travel? Which cards indicate a need to view life as a journey, or to focus on a metaphoric journey? How much overlap exists for you between these groups of cards?
When it comes to how the cards speak to each of us, we all have our own personal relationship with each card. Yet, we will all have cards in our personal tarot vocabulary that reference each aspect of life. Literal travel and metaphoric journeys are often themes in tarot readings, even if the cards that express these things may differ from reader to reader.
When we discuss literal travel in a reading, we might be predicting a vacation, or a business trip. When we discuss a metaphoric journey we may be using the cards to help frame a chapter in life in order to find ways to cope, or ways to make the most of a specific undertaking.

Connecting with Your Inner Child
Inner child work helps us to heal from early trauma. When we connect with our inner child, we can remember who we are, and move forward with the energy that made us joyful in your youth. We can move forward without the burden of our traumas. Tarot can help us in this process.
In modern psychology, ‘inner child work’ is an approach created by Carl Jung. With inner child work we recognize childhood trauma in order to heal as adults.
Most people realize that many of our fears, difficulties, and unpleasant patterns in our adult lives stem from what we learned, witnessed, and experienced during childhood. I often say that many of us spend most of our lives recovering from the first twenty years.
Those who grew up in seriously dysfunctional families, or who had health issues or upheaval due to tragedy are aware of their childhood trauma. Those who had more idyllic childhoods often do not recognize that they, too, have childhood trauma. They, therefore, may find it harder to do the inner child work that could help them in their adult lives.
I also believe that we can connect with our inner child to find our sense of personal identity, authenticity, and purpose by identifying the things we naturally did and enjoyed as children.
So many people I speak with are longing to understand who they are, what makes them happy, and what makes them feel that they are living a meaningful and purposeful life. I believe that inner child work can help all of us remember who we are.
There are many ways to do inner child work. You can engage a therapist to help you. You can write your inner child a letter. You can do a meditation where you communicate with your inner child.
Many of us in the divination community are exploring ways that divination can assist us as we work to connect with, and give voice to, the inner child.

Giving Voice to Your Inner Child
One way to do inner child work with tarot is to allow your inner child to speak through tarot.
You can do this simply by asking the right questions and interpreting the card that appears in the context of that question.
Here are some questions to get you started.
What is a childhood trauma that needs to be healed?
What is something my inner child wants me to know?
What is something I enjoyed as a child that has become an important part of my identity?
How can I be more playful?
How can I honor my inner child at this time?
See Me in the Northeast

Guidance on the Journey
Which tarot cards might instruct us to work with our inner child, to honor our inner child, or to listen to our inner child?
In context, any tarot card might give voice to the feelings and needs of the inner child. Yet, there are a few cards that could appear in any reading, at any time, and beckon you to do the work to connect to your inner child.
Here are some of them.
The Fool asks you to honor your inner child.
The Sun asks you to be fearless in your joy, just as a child does.
The Pages ask you to remember the desires of your youth, and who you have always been.
The Six of Cups asks you to remember and revisit your childhood.
The Ten of Cups and the Ten of Pentacles can speak of your family, and your childhood home.
