Play

We often hear that “play is the work of children.” What we don’t hear often enough is how important play is for adults. When we are young, we learn through play. The same is true when we become older.

Taking time to be playful is also important to our physical and emotional well-being. This time of year offers many opportunities to step outside of our routine and do something silly or fun.

Make sure that, during this busy holiday time, you take time to play!

The Tarot Fool: Honoring the Inner Child

Numbered card 0, the tarot Fool, is the star of the story told by tarot. As such, the Fool is the card that represents each one of us on our journey through life. The Fool is often pictured at a crossroads, or about to walk off a cliff. Although he does not know what lies ahead, he proceeds forward unconcerned. His attitude is merry and carefree.

Often, when the Fool figures in a reading, he reminds us to be playful, and to honor our inner child. The Fool encourages us to take the leap of faith, even if we are unsure of the outcome.

Recently, someone said something to me that made me think of the Fool. She said that to experience joy, we must be fully present in the moment, rather than worrying about the past or the future.

We when adopt a playful attitude that honors our inner child, we are able to experience joy in the simple moments of our lives.

Often, the Fool is a tarot card that can help us do that.

The Week in Review

This week, on my Dark Forest blog, I wrote An Open Letter to Self-Published Creatives. We reviewers and bloggers are happy to help promote your projects. You just need to ask the right way!

On my personal blog, Tarot Trends, I wrote a short, inspirational piece about how we envision the future.

On our Tarot Topics Community page, I wrote about the process of finding your inner tarot reader.

On my 78 Magickal Tools blog on PaganSquare, I posted “Tarot Magick for the World.”

From Around the Web

From Conjure in the City, here is an interesting post about how to spot psychic scams and spellcaster frauds. Let me be clear that I do not necessarily believe or endorse every point in this post, but I believe it is an interesting perspective. I also believe that we do need to be aware of psychic fraud, and keep ourselves safe from those who try to take advantage.

From Carrie Paris, here is an interview with James Wells and a special tarot spread about activating your creative gifts.

For last-minute holiday shopping, here is a source for 300 different affordable tarot-themed art prints!

Resources for Tarot Play

There are many games and activities you can enjoy with your tarot cards, even beyond the techniques of divination, meditation, manifestation and personal growth with which you are already familiar.

My book, “Tarot Tour Guide”, offers a number of interesting games and exercises to help you play with your cards.

There are many other great resources to help you think outside the box and have more fun with tarot.

The book, “Tarot Games” has been a go-to of mine for years. Written for the feminist community for use with the Motherpeace Round Tarot, many of these games translate well to groups large or small, with any type of tarot decks.

Here are two interesting books I haven’t read. Each offers unique ideas for tarot fun.

365 Tarot Activities” could be used in daily tarot study.

The Tarot Activity Book: A Collection of Creative and Therapeutic Ideas for the Cards” has a wealth of interesting tarot exercises.

The Tarot Game” is an actual board game played with tarot cards!

How do you play with tarot?

Learning Tarot: King of Swords

The King of Swords is the highest expression of the Air energy in the Minor Arcana.

The King of Swords can represent an adult man, perhaps born under an Air sign (Geminin, Libra, Aquarius).

The King of Swords can also be a trustworthy man, or a gentleman with honorable intentions.

The King of Swords can also be a good communicator or an authority on ethics, integrity, technology, science or communication, of any gender.

The King of Swords may refer to an institution, such as a bank, a university or a corporation. The King of Swords may indicate be a leader, specifically a leader who speaks in favor of doing the right thing.

The King of Swords may remind you to speak your truth and honor your integrity. The King of Swords may encourage you to step into a leadership role.

The King of Swords may speak of you, or someone else, as an exemplar, that is, an example to the community of the honorable way to be.

This concludes our journey through the suit of Swords, the Air suit. Next week we will begin our journey through the suit of Pentacles.

Your One-Card Weekly Reading

Your One-Card Weekly Reading is the Sun.

Appropriate as we approach the Winter Solstice, the card I draw for us this week is Major Arcana 19, the Sun.

The Sun is a card of brilliance and happiness, and reminds you to seek joy during this holiday season.

The Sun also commands you to use your skills and abilities for the betterment of the world. Do not let anyone steal your peace, or your power. Do not let anyone, or anything, cast a shadow on your inner light.

In mundane things and spiritual things this week, find what makes you happy, and share your happiness with others.

Gifts

So many cultures’ winter holidays include a tradition of gift giving. For many people, the giving and receiving of presents becomes the singular focus of the season, and a source of stress. I think we can keep the holidays holy and still enjoy the tradition of giving gifts, as long as we give from our hearts and within our means.

Sometimes the gifts we give aren’t things that come from stores. Sometimes we can use our own gifts and talents to create something meaningful for the people we love.

Sometimes, the greatest gift we can give to someone is our time. Sometimes, our presence in someone’s life is the best present we could give.

Five Cards We See During the Holidays

Many people have similar experiences and expectations of the holidays, and not all of them are pleasant. When we perform readings for others or ourselves during the holiday season, we may see some holiday themes reflected in the cards. Here are five tarot cards that can have particular meaning during the holiday season.

Six of Cups: This card can speak of reunions, old friends, nostalgia and a return to one’s childhood home. This can be a very pleasant card, but can also indicate an unhealthy longing for the holiday times of the past, or a disappointment that traditions and families have changed so much. This can also indicate the revisiting of painful family dynamics.

Three of Cups: We often call this “The Party Card,” and there are plenty of parties to attend this time of year. This card can predict fun times and social interaction, but it can warn against over-indulgence.

Hierophant: This card can speak to the religious traditions of the season, as well as family expectations and family traditions. Often families have difficulty during the holiday season because of different family members’ expectations regarding the keeping of traditions.

Ten of Pentacles: This is another card of family tradition, and suggests the opportunity for generations to gather. This card can speak of enjoying ones’ home. During the holidays, this card might refer to entertaining in ones’ home or the joys and woes of decorating ones’ home.

Six of Pentacles: Anytime you see this card, it can refer to charity. At this time of year, our thoughts often turn to helping those less fortunate. This card can also refer to the process of gift shopping or exchanging gifts. It can also talk about the anxiety inherent in gift giving.

When you see these cards appear in your readings over the course of the season, be aware of the possibility that they may be referring to the holiday season.

The Week in Review

This week on my Dark Forest Blog I wrote about my new favorite sport; riding my tricycle!

On my Tarot Topics Community Blog I wrote about a surprising aspect of my career. I am often asked to speak about tarot in unlikely places. I’ve learned to cultivate this, and for a good reason. Read “Be an Ambassador for Tarot.”

On my personal blog, Tarot Trends, I wrote about the second meeting of the Tampa Bay Area Tarot Meetup, and something important I learned there.

From Around the Web

I really enjoyed this post from Jenna Matlin at Queen of Wands Tarot. She explains her unique process of working with a Celtic Cross Spread. I think you will find this fascinating.

Do you think tarot and yoga go together? Here is someone who is working on a yoga sequence inspired by the Major Arcana! See what you think about “Taroyoga.”

From Lisa Boswell, here are her ideas of ways to use tarot to answer “yes or no” questions.

Creative Tarot Gift Giving Exercise

Every holiday season I share some ideas about how we can use tarot to help in our holiday gift giving. Of course, you can simply think of a person you need a gift for and pull a card or two. Interpret the cards in a way that points you to a unique, thoughtful and appropriate gift. This is a simple and practical way to utilize tarot during the holidays.

Here is another, more complex tarot gift-giving exercise.

We all have our own special gifts and talents. It is nice when the gift we give someone comes from our own hand and heart; something we can make or a service we can provide.

If you would like some great ideas for gifts that you could make or do yourself, simply think of an intended recipient. Then, ask this question. “What gift or talent do I have that I could share with this person?” Pull a card, or a few cards, at random. Let the cards inspire you to create the perfect gifts!

Learning Tarot: Queen of Swords

The Queen of Swords has a bit of a bad reputation. Older tarot books will tell you “don’t trust this woman.” In traditional tarot, the Queen of Swords often represented a childless woman, an unmarried woman, a widow, or a bitter, sharp-tongued woman.

This is an example of the misogynistic roots of tarot. The Queen of Swords is the Queen of Air. Air is the element of intelligence, truth and communication. Today we understand the Queen of Swords as a woman who speaks the truth.  A few hundred years ago, people did not always appreciate an intelligent woman offering her opinion!

The Queen of Swords in a reading may refer to a woman who has borne some pain, or a woman who is not afraid to speak an unpleasant truth or to do the right thing in a difficult situation.

The Queen of Swords may appear in a reading to remind you to speak your truth, to follow your conscience or to make a rational choice.

The Queen of Swords may also refer to a woman born under an Air sun sign, that is, Gemini, Libra, or Aquarius.

Next week we will meet the final character in the Swords Court, the King of Swords.

Preparations!

The holiday season is upon us once again. It’s the time of advent calendars, guest lists, shopping lists and travel plans. Everyone is doing something, creating something or planning something. Excitement is in the air!

Already, we look ahead to next month, and prepare to greet a new year of possibilities.

As we prepare for the holidays ahead, let’s also take time to prepare our minds and hearts for the wonderful things in store for each of us. So often, we look to the future with apprehension.

What would happen if we simply made preparations for wonderful things to happen?

Prepare for the Unexpected!

Tarot can help us be prepared for things we might know even know are coming. As a single card reading, or at the end of a longer reading, consider pulling a card about the unknown future.

You can ask a question such as:

What should I be prepared for in the next three months?

What unexpected thing is coming my way soon?

What do I need to focus on now to prepare for the future?

What should I expect from my job this year?

What sort of people will I meet in the next month?

Asking the right questions helps us be prepared for anything!

Advent Tarot Spread

When I was a child, we made Advent wreaths in Sunday School. There were four candles in a tin foil pie plate, one for each Sunday in Advent. The first three candles were white, the last one, the Christmas candle, was red.

Here is a tarot spread based on that Advent wreath. Arrange a square of four cards, starting with the upper left hand and moving to the upper right. Let the third card be the lower right, and then the fourth card with be the lower left.

Use this spread whenever you are preparing to bring something wonderful into your life, whether it is something you know about, or whether it is something you are trying to manifest.

Let the first three cards in the square give you information about what you need to do to prepare for and manifest your goal. Let the fourth card give you information about the goal itself.

You can use this spread at any time of the year to help you set and attain your goals!

Learning Tarot: Knight of Swords

The Knight of Swords is the swiftest of the four Knights. When describing a person, the Knight of Swords is fast moving and fast acting.

Sometimes the Knight of Swords will appear in a reading to encourage you to do something swiftly, or to let you know that something will happen very quickly.

The Knight of Swords can appear in a reading to discuss the pursuit of truth, either in a philosophical or mundane way.

The Knight of Swords refer to a younger person, especially someone who is intelligent, and a good communicator.

Key words and phrases for the Knight of Swords include speed, youth, travel, revelation, pursuit, truth, communication, right action.

Sometimes, the Knight of Swords appears in a reading to remind you to do the right thing. Sometimes the Knight of Swords encourages communication.

The Knight of Swords might indicate a trip, especially a trip to conduct research, learn something or communicate something.

Next week we will continue our journey through the Swords Court when we meet the Queen of Swords.

I’m Traveling Northeast in March and August!

I had such a wonderful time on my Northeastern Tour last August. The only frustration was I didn’t have time on the calendar to accommodate everyone who wanted to host a psychic house party with me! In 2015 I will remedy this by scheduling two trips. I will be in Connecticut from March 20th to March 29th, and again from August 7th to August 23rd.

Psychic house parties with me will be available in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts during those trips. Please give me a call or send me an email if you would like to reserve your date now.

While I am always available to serve you with phone and Skype readings, the opportunity for in-person readings is limited. If you live in the Northeast, don’t miss your chance to meet with me in person in 2015!

Harvest

Most cultures have an annual festival to celebrate the harvest. In our modern world of food distribution, we don’t always think about how our ancestors might have feared the coming winter, or how a great harvest might have ensured their survival and assuaged their fears.

In the United States, our Thanksgiving holiday is a time for people to enjoy food and fellowship together, and to give thanks for our bounty.

When we think of our “harvest” this year, many of us count our success in terms of material resources. There are other resources we cultivate and harvest. These resources are not always so tangible or easily quantifiable. These resources include friendship, knowledge, creativity and health.

What are you harvesting during this time of giving thanks?

Two Ways to Create Your Harvest with Tarot

What do you want to harvest in your life? Here are two ways to use tarot to help you create your own bountiful harvest. One involves manifestation, the other uses divination.

To manifest your harvest, simply look through your tarot deck and pick the cards that represent the energies you want in your life. Focus on the cards, and invite their energies in. You can keep the cards under your pillow overnight or in a special place in your house. The next morning simply shuffle them back into the deck. The energies of the cards you choose with attract similar energies into your life.

To perform a divination about your harvest, simply pull two cards at random. Let the first card represent what you want to harvest. Let the second card represent what you need to do to make that happen.

Tarot is a tool that allows us to work with the Universe to become co-creators of our lives. Through manifestation, divination and meditation, tarot helps us create the harvest we desire.

The Week in Review

This week on my Dark Forest blog, I wrote about my papaya tree. If you’re from Florida, having a papaya tree isn’t a big deal. For me, it is a source of delight.

On my Tarot Topics Community Blog, I shared some Minor Arcana tarot exercises. These are great for journaling, or for work within a group.

On my personal blog, Tarot Trends, I wrote about Tarot Archetypes, and whether or not it’s acceptable for tarot artists to change the archetypes. I would love to know what you think!

From Around the Web

In honor of Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday, here are some entrepreneurs who have some wonderful and affordable gifts.

If you ever attended Christiana’s Psychic and New Age Fair back in the 1990s in New England, you may have met Ed and Sonja Mondazzi. Now Ed and Sonja are the proprietors at Discount New Age Books. You will not believe the great prices you can find here on books, tarot cards and other spiritual supplies.

Recently I’ve discovered the joys of potpourri. I’ve ordered a number of items from The Herb Lady, and have always be thrilled with the products and the service.

I simply love aromatherapy products from Helene Martz at Intuitive Goddess. You can find some great gifts on her Etsy site.

Harvesting Tarot

Tarot is a wonderful resource, and one that I am extremely thankful to have, both personally and professionally.

There is so much wisdom within a tarot deck for you to harvest, and so many available resources to help you find that wisdom.

If you want to harvest more tarot wisdom, consider some of these great free tarot resources.

1. Tarot YouTube Channels:

Many tarot instructors have great YouTube channels, with all sorts of videos to help you learn about tarot.

2. Internet Broadcasting:

There are a great number of internet radio shows, podcasts and webcasts based on tarot. You can hear interviews with deck authors, tarot readers and tarot instructors.

3. Tarot Websites:

Many tarotists keep blogs, and make card meanings and tarot spreads available free on their websites.

A simple search on a term like "learn tarot" will give you a great start.

As busy as you may be during this holiday season, and as chock-full of knowledge as tarot is, you can still find the resources you need to harvest all the wisdom tarot has to offer!

Learning Tarot: Page of Swords

In tarot, the Court cards, that is, the Pages, Knights, Queens and Kings, can represent people, predict events or suggest actions.

Typically, Pages are young people, or students. As the Air Page, the Page of Swords is very interested in precise communication. The Page of Swords is a good student who wants to learn and communicate the truth.

Swords, as the suit of Air, represents the powers of the mind, such as intelligence, integrity and communication. Since Pages are students and communicators, the Page of Swords is one of the strongest references to learning and communication in the seventy-eight cards.

When you see the Page of Swords in a reading, decide if this card represents a younger person in your querent’s life.

The Page of Swords could also represent an aspect of your querent. The Page of Swords might indicate the need to go to school, learn new things, or make a greater effort to communicate.

The Page of Swords might encourage writing or research; anything that determines and communicates what is true.

After the devastation of the Nine and Ten of Swords, the Page offers a refreshing opportunity to release the hurt of poor communication and poor integrity and to move forward, armed with the truth.

Next week, we will continue to explore the Swords Court when we meet the Knight of Swords.

Your One-Card Weekly Reading

Your one-card reading this week is Justice.

Justice reminds us to do the right thing, even when it is difficult to do, and even when doing the right thing won’t result in our immediate favor.

Justice reminds us that everything balances out in the end. We can’t expect to be treated fairly, by others, or by the Universe.

Justice reminds us that things will happen that are not fair. Without anger and fear, we must maintain our faith that justice will be served in the end.

Justice reminds us that doing the right thing is its own reward.
