Thank Your Younger Self

This week we are talking about holding our younger self in gratitude.

Every day, I see memes asking us to advise our younger selves. What would you want your younger self to know? What do you wish someone had told you when you were younger? These questions can be light-hearted and thought-provoking.

Something I have never seen is a prompt about what you are grateful for in your younger self. What did you do when you were younger that has served you well over the years? What did you do that put you on a good path? Was there something that seemed like a mistake then but turned out to create a golden opportunity?

If you could go back and thank your younger self for something, what would it be?

Viewing our past through a lens of gratitude changes things. So often, we hang on to past regrets. We look at our younger selves and wish we had done things differently.

When we hold our young selves with gratitude, we automatically hold our young selves with compassion.

That compassionate, grateful vision of the journey that brought us here is a gift to the present and future self.

Amy Forman might be entertaining at an upscale corporate party or family celebration on any given weekend. Sometimes, she is hired to read tarot. Sometimes, she makes balloon animals. Occasionally, she performs as a belly dancer, hoop dancer, or mermaid. Sometimes, she offers lip print readings.

Lip print reading is a fascinating new divination technique uniquely suited to the party environment.

At StaarCon 2024, Amy will offer a two-part Friday Intensive entitled The Art of Reading Lip Prints. You will spend the first session learning the technique and the second session practicing and seeing how it works. Whether you join in person or online, you can learn this simple, easy, and fascinating divination technique.

A Tarot Spread for Regret and Gratitude

Is there something in your past that is hard for you to process? Is there a decision you made years ago that proved to be unwise?

It is unlikely that any adult would answer these questions negatively. We all have regrets.

The question is, can we find gratitude as we reprocess the past to heal and get closure?

Here is a tarot spread to help you do that.

Let Card One represent the situation you regret.

Let Card Two represent your actions in that situation.

Let Card Three represent the reason for your actions.

Let Card Four represent the regrettable outcome of that situation.

Let Card Five show you something good that came from that situation.

Creation and Divination

Here is a way to create a simple oracle based on your own life so far. The process of creation will be insightful and healing. The oracle you make will be as unique as you are.

Make a list of the important things that have happened in your life, both pleasant and unpleasant. Then, make a list of things that you have learned from those events. Make a list of your regrets and your gratitudes.

Get a pack of index cards.

Write one item for your lists on each card. Or, if you are artistic, draw a symbol or simple image to represent each item.

Once your cards are complete, use them as a personal oracle. You can draw a card for insight or to answer questions.

What Might Have Been

How we process our regret from the past makes a difference for our present and our future. That's what this week's newsletter is about.

My mother often recited a verse in response to expressions of regret about the past.

For of all sad words of tongue or pen,

The saddest are these: 'It might have been!’

I hear her voice in my head saying these words at the tarot table when helping clients process their past regrets. I never say these words aloud to my clients. That would not be any more helpful to them than it was to me all those years ago.

What fascinates me is how often our regrets are intensified by the firm belief that if one thing had been different, some other important thing would have turned out so much better.

The movie The Butterfly Effect handily refutes the notion that a single different choice would always create a better outcome.

We can use tarot to challenge our beliefs about past regrets and gain a new perspective. For example, if someone blames their in-laws for their failed marriage, a tarot reading could reveal a different truth. Hearing that new truth could allow health and closure.

A funny thing happened when I Googled the origin of this verse my mother often repeated. I was thrilled to find a delightful story along with the source.

According to Wikipedia, the verse is from a poem written in 1856 called “Maud Muller.” The poem is about two young people from different stations in life who, despite a great attraction, don’t become a couple. Instead, each endure unhappy marriages. The poem's premise is that they would have been happier if they had chosen one another.

A younger contemporary of the poet wrote a parody sequel where the couple got together and lived unhappily ever after. The closing line of this poem is witty satire.

More sad are these we daily see:

‘It is but hadn’t ought to be.’

This poem and its sequel parody perfectly illustrate how we struggle to get closure to the past because of the stories we tell ourselves. We cast ourselves as the villain rather than giving ourselves grace. We forget that we always did our best with what we had. We imagine things would be so much better if a different decision had been made.

Common sense, spiritual wisdom, and divination often combine to point the way back to obvious truths. It's impossible to know for sure what events would have followed a different decision or if that outcome would have been better than what occurred. Treating ourselves with grace and understanding, rather than shame and guilt, helps us process the past and move forward.

Perhaps the most important thing is to try to view our entire past, both good and bad, as leading us toward a brighter future. This enables us to live with acceptance rather than regret. Then we can focus on what is, and what will be, rather than what we think might have been.

Processing the Past with Tarot

Many popular tarot spreads have a position for the past. For example, the three-card spread Past, Present, Future has a card that speaks to the querent’s past as its first position.

Many larger spreads have positions like recent past, foundation, unresolved issues, etc. Although we often think of divination in terms of future prediction, divination can be equally helpful in understanding the past.

Sometimes we formulate specific questions about the past. Sometimes we have questions about what really happened to which no living being has the answer. Then, tarot can help fill in the blanks and give us an idea of what happened or why something happened.

Sometimes we wonder if the decision we made was the right decision. We can use the cards to determine what might have happened in different scenarios. This often leads us to the understanding that what happened was the best thing that could have happened.

When we see a past position in a tarot spread, there are options about how to interpret the card that falls within it. Is the past five minutes ago or five years? A good rule to remember is that whatever appears in the spread will be pertinent to the current moment. That means whatever the past card references is still important or influential now.

Science is only beginning to understand the amount of trauma each person experiences and the effect that trauma has on our well-being. Tarot is a great tool to help us understand and process our past trauma so that we can nurture our best lives possible.

Creation and Divination

Storytelling is a creative, dramatic art. Interestingly, Pamela Colman Smith, the artist of the world’s most popular tarot images, was a professional storyteller.

Using tarot cards to tell stories, whether in divination or as a creative prompt, is an exercise that quickly helps us become great tarot readers.

We are all storytellers, even if we do not actively engage in creative performance or divination.

We are all storytellers because we all keep a running autobiographical narrative in our heads.

The problem is that we need to acknowledge that the way we tell our stories is a choice and a perception rather than a set of immovable facts.

Who is the villain, and who is the hero? What was the motivation? What really happened? Every day, we make choices about how we tell the stories of our past, how we understand our present, and how we see our future possibilities.

This means that we each have a god-like power to change how we perceive our past, control some of the energies around us each day, and create the future we want.

What gives us this power?

This power comes to us when we recognize that how we tell our stories influences our well-being, experiences, relationships, and success.

Look for the Glimmers!

A glimmer is the opposite of a trigger. A glimmer gives us hope and joy when we need it. This week, we are looking for the glimmers!

I have learned a new word usage that I really like and want to share with you. We are all familiar with the concept of mental health triggers. Triggers are words, topics, thoughts, and images that can stimulate an unpleasant emotional reaction.

A glimmer is the opposite of a trigger. In this modern slang usage, a glimmer is something that stimulates a positive, hopeful, joyful emotional reaction.

A glimmer can be something that reminds you of a good thing that happened in the past. A glimmer can be something that feels uplifting for you in the moment.

We look for trigger warnings to avoid exposing ourselves to something that could hurt us or slow our healing.

What would happen if we started to look for glimmers? What are the signs of hope around us? What can you see, hear, find, or think about that could give you a momentary sense of joy?

What are things that reliably bring you cheer?

For me, looking for glimmers is a spiritual practice. I believe that the Universe sends us all sorts of signs. Sometimes we want to interpret those signs as a specific piece of advice. I worry that we often interpret these signs based on our fears and desires. We think hope is about getting what we want and avoiding what we don’t want.

I think it can be helpful to find the glimmers of joy and embrace the energy of hope without tightly defining what the realization of that hope might look like. The more that our glimmers allow us not only to hope but also to trust, the more uplifted we can be.

Her presentation “Strega Strategies” at StaarCon 2023 was inspiring and enlightening. We are so excited that Teri has agreed to join us in 2024, and we cannot wait to learn more from her!

Which Tarot Cards Speak of Hope?

While we can find hope in any tarot card and any tarot reading, some cards specifically offer a hopeful message. Some cards, like the Star and the Nine of Cups, are obviously hopeful.

Many other cards can be interpreted in a hopeful way, depending on the context in which they appear.

Here are three tarot cards not typically associated with hope that can sometimes surprise you with a hopeful message.

The Four of Pentacles is often associated with selfishness and miserly behavior. Yet, the Four of Pentacles offers a hopeful message when it can be interpreted to encourage healthy boundaries and good self-care.

The Moon is traditionally a card of mystery, treachery, and hidden enemies. Yet, it is also a card that encourages our psychic development and spiritual growth.

The Seven of Pentacles in the Waite-Smith Tarot is associated with the Irish Potato Famine. Yet, it can also be an admonition to tend your garden with care in anticipation of a harvest.

When we look at these three cards, we can understand that many, most, or all tarot cards can speak of hope in some way. As an exercise, pull a card at random. No matter what the card is, find a way to see a hopeful message for yourself within it.

I am so excited to see that so many new people are coming to tarot meetups and joining tarot groups. If you are new to tarot and looking for a tarot resource, Joan Bunning’s Learning the Tarot website is amazing!

Creation and Divination

When we look for hopeful signs and joyful reminders in our day-to-day lives, we will undoubtedly find them. We can also find these signs within our tarot decks.

Use your creativity to ask questions and interpret cards to give you the glimmer you need. This requires advanced tarot skills because of the specific context of the question.

For example, suppose you asked for something that would give you a sense of joy, and you received the Three of Swords. How can you interpret the Three of Swords in a way that gives you a joyful moment? You might place the sorrow of the Three of Swords in the past and find joy in the healing you have accomplished. You might see the swords in the image as hard truths you are embracing and find joy in your capacity.

What if you receive a card typically associated with joy or happiness? That can also be challenging because a card with the keyword ‘joy’ will not bring a moment of joy simply because of its keyword. You must dive more deeply into the card to find a specific joyful message for yourself.

This exercise utilizes your creativity and strengthens your tarot skills as you find glimmers within your tarot deck.

You Are Too Sensitive!

If people tell you that you are too sensitive, this week's newsletter is for you! This week we are thinking about boundaries, psychic protection, and why your sensitivity is a strength, not a weakness.

Has anyone ever accused you of being too sensitive? Your answer is probably yes if you are a psychic, tarot reader, medium, intuitive, empath, or energy worker.

Your answer is likely yes if you were raised in a chaotic situation because you had to learn to sense the shifting energies around you.

If you are neurodivergent, either diagnosed or undiagnosed, your answer is also likely to be yes.

As sensitive people, we need to learn to process the world around us in ways that work for us.

Sometimes we may need to learn not to take things personally when they aren’t meant that way. Sometimes, people accuse us of being overly sensitive simply because they would rather not cease their hurtful behavior. When that happens, boundaries become the next line of defense.

Boundaries are essential for everyone. Diviners, intuitive, empaths, and energy workers especially need to be mindful of energetic boundaries, also known as psychic protection. Verbal boundaries help us deflect the hurtful words and behaviors of others and protect ourselves from further mistreatment. Yet, we also must be able to protect ourselves energetically. Psychic protection is essential during divination and energy work. It is equally important when we are out in the world doing our mundane tasks.

Boundary setting is a skill that most of us were not taught as children. Psychic protection is a skill that needs to be stressed more in tarot classes and divination gatherings. We must actively learn the skills to protect ourselves from emotional and energetic injury. We must also reject the criticism that we are ‘too sensitive.’ Instead, removing ourselves from people who do not honor our boundaries is usually best.

Our sensitivities may have come to us due to trauma, genetics, or destiny. Our sensitivities can sometimes make life difficult. The better we learn to manage how we experience the energies around us, the more we can use our sensitivities to enjoy what is beautiful, create what inspires us, and divine the truth around us.

The StaarCorner

One of the most important aspects of tarot and divination conferences is the opportunity for fellowship. New friends who speak our language and share our interests offer us immense comfort and courage as we grow, learn, and explore.

StaarCon separates itself from all other tarot and divination conferences because of the fellowship opportunities we offer in person and online.

You can enjoy the resort hotel with your conference friends if you join us in person. You can take the free shuttle to Rosemary Square and experience the restaurants, shops, and nightlife, making lifelong memories with your colleagues.

If you join us online, you will see that Accelevents offers a robust conference environment that allows on-demand video and text chat and networking with all your conference friends.

Every virtual and in-person ticketholder has access to the conference on Accelevents during the pre-conference time, the conference, and the 365-day AfterGlow. This means that in-person attendees can use the Accelevents app or website to plan their conference priorities and connect with other conference-goers, both virtual and in person.

A fascinating aspect of StaarCon is the lounge events on Accelevents. During the conference, attendees can meet virtually in the lounges to enjoy meals, beverages, and conversations together.

During the year-long AfterGlow, all attendees can watch recordings of the conference sessions they missed at their leisure. We will also have scheduled events in the lounges. Some StaarCon presenters will teach monthly or quarterly classes. There will also be a lounge for attendees to meet in groups at their convenience for conversation and study.

Attending StaarCon, whether in person or virtually, allows you to learn from our top-notch educators and, perhaps most significantly, to spend quality time with your tarot buddies.

Find a Response with Tarot

The next time you feel hurt by someone’s words or actions (or lack thereof), use tarot to help you understand what has happened and formulate a response.

Ask questions like, “What was the intent of that comment?” “What did they think my reaction would be?” “What should I take away from this?” “What is my best response?” “What do I need to know about this situation?”

Pull a card or cards for each question, using whatever tarot techniques you prefer.

As you contemplate what has happened and use tarot to fill in the black spots, you can understand and find a way forward. The time you take to work with the cards will allow you to recover from your internal emotional reaction and thoughtfully create an appropriate external reaction.

Creation and Divination

So much psychic work, energy healing, and magic involves the skill of creative visualization. Creative visualization uses the ability to create a scene in your mind’s eye that is clear and detailed.

When we visualize something clearly and put our energy into it, we raise energy that can turn thought into something more tangible.

Sometimes creative visualization allows us to see and feel what is present but not generally observed. For example, we may not all see the glow of chakras on ourselves or our friends. Yet, with visualization, we more easily see and feel the chakras that are always part of us.

My psychic protection technique involves creative visualization. Here is how it works.

I start by breathing into the root chakra. From there, I send energy from the root chakra down my legs into the floor and down to the earth. I curl my energy into the earth like a root, and as I inhale, I bring energy from the earth into the root chakra. With each inhalation, I breathe the energy up the spine, paying particular attention to any area that does not flow easily.

If I am preparing for a reading, I pay special attention to the throat and the brow so that I may be able to see what I need to see and say what I need to say.

When I reach the crown chakra at the top of the head, I allow the energy to gather and then release to heaven. At this moment, I am connected to both earth and heaven. It is with this unlimited supportive energy that I conduct my readings.

Yet, more protection is still needed. I return my attention to the crown chakra, where I allow the energy to flow up and out in all directions, falling like a fountain, returning to the earth, and cycling up through my root, up my spine, out my crown, and covering me fully in protective energy that is constantly replenished and renewed by the earth.

This is but one way to work with the power of creative visualization to raise energy and create psychic protection. Whether you use a technique like this for psychic work or simply to move more comfortably through the world, you will find psychic protection can make a huge difference for you.
