Tarot Topics Newsletter 1/21/2015

Tarot Topics celebrates the New Moon, January 21, 2015. Enjoy a free tarot webinar tonight, try a New Moon Tarot Spread, and discover the different between the tarot Moon and the Lenormand Moon!

The Moon

Many spiritual cultures observe the phases of the moon. The Jewish calendar is based on lunar phases. Some traditions of Yoga have special observances during certain moon times. In the mundane world, it’s believed that the full moon affects our moods and behaviors.

January 21, 2015 is the New Moon. In many cultures, the New Moon is a time to plant seeds. That is, to set your intentions for what you would like to see manifest in the coming month.

When the moon is full, we celebrate our bounty, and hold the vision for continued success.

When the moon is waning, we rid ourselves of the habits and thoughts that no longer serve us.

Many people believe the power of the moon is a constant ally in our journey through life.

What seeds will you plant this New Moon?

Two Moons: The Tarot Moon and the Lenormand Moon

It’s not surprising that the Moon gets a role in the two most prominent card divination systems, tarot and Lenormand. But how do we interpret these cards? Are there any similarities between the tarot Moon and the Lenormand Moon?

Let’s take a look.

In tarot, the moon is in the last third of the Major Arcana, making it a more spiritual card.

There are several different traditions regarding the tarot Moon. For some, this card can appear as a warning of treachery, or hidden enemies.

For others, the Moon indicates illusion, lunacy and dangerous fantasies.

For many others, the Moon is about embracing your spiritual path, and solving some of the spiritual mysteries of life. The Moon encourages use of intuition, and psychic development.

The Moon can be associated with cycles, secrets, mysteries, dreams and nightmares.

One thing all these different interpretations for the Moon have in common is this. No matter how you look at it, things in the light of the moon look differently than they do in the daytime. Not everything we see is as it seems. When the Moon appears in a reading, we must look deeper, whether to solve a mystery, find a traitor, listen to our intuition or find our spiritual path.

The Lenormand system is much simpler than tarot. Each card has a correspondence to a playing card. As we consider the Lenormand key words for the Moon, we will see that a few of them are indeed similar to the tarot Moon, but a few are substantially different.

The Lenormand Moon is card 32, and associated with the Eight of Hearts, meaning small joys, sincerity, and satisfaction. These concepts are very different from the mystery of the tarot Moon!

Some key words for the Lenormand Moon include emotions, romance, arts, and intuition.  A very popular key word for this card is very different from the tarot Moon. That key word is fame. The Lenormand Moon can speak of fame, recognition and acknowledgement. This card can describe famous artists, and predict success at work.

The Lenormand system is much more literal than tarot. Since the Moon rules the night, the Lenormand Moon card can refer to things that happen at night, such as romance, and creative entertainment. Most artists perform in the evenings. Most lovemaking happens at night.

The moon is an important spiritual symbol, and an important archetype in both tarot and Lenormand.

The Week in Review

Changes to my website have continued this week. Look how my 78 Poems Project is coming along!

This week, on my Personal Blog, I shared some thoughts about what I call “Oddball Cards”.

On the Community Blog, I shared my latest fun tarot project, called “Poetry in Tarot.”

From Around the Web

Since this issue of Tarot Topics is all about the moon, here are some websites to help you learn more!

Just about everything you would want to know about the phases of the moon is available at Moon Connection.

Of course, the moon is important in astrology. Here is some great information about the moon from Café Astrology.

From About.com, here is a New Moon Manifestation Ceremony, and other resources for working with the moon in healing ceremony.

New Moon Tarot Spread

Here is a three-card tarot spread to try this week, or any time of the New Moon.

Card One: What seed am I planting?

Card Two: How shall I nurture it?

Card Three: What fruit will it bear?

You might find this spread will speak to you about goals you have already set. It might also make you aware of some unintentional energies you are setting in motion, or some new opportunities available to you.

What’s up on the Psychic Café?

This past week we featured a very early episode of the Psychic Café, which includes conversations with Marcy Currier and Lourdes Starshower.

Marcy is an artist, healer and tarotist. She’s working on a tarot deck that features adorable frogs, called “The Mystical Frog Tarot”.

Lourdes is a tantric healer and belly dancer. The interview includes some fabulous footage of Lourdes dancing with fire on a rooftop.

If you haven’t seen this show yet, make sure watch it on my YouTube channel, or on my website.

New to the YouTube archive, and featured this week, is my show from September 1, 2013 on PEN. This show features a conversation with Kim Wilborn of The Guardian Gateway. At the time, we were promoting a Tarot Telesummit. Recordings of that telesummit, along with material on many interesting topics, are just a few of the interesting products and services Kim offers.
The second half of the show is a discussion of the Major Arcana. This will be of specific interest to students of tarot.

You can watch the show on the Christiana’s Psychic Café Facebook page beginning Sunday night, or on my YouTube channel

Learning Tarot: Three of Pentacles

In tarot, the number Three suggests a success, that is, the fruit of a particular labor. In the Three of Pentacles, we see work being done successfully.

There is some disagreement amongst tarotists about the interpretation of the Three of Pentacles. Clearly, it is about work. Some see this card as the master craftsman. Others feel it is a card of apprenticeship.

Most agree that the Three of Pentacles speaks of recognition and accomplishment in a specific career or trade.

Since a key word for this card is work, or works, this card can appear to suggest that a particular plan or solution is a good one, because it will work.

Key words for the Three of Pentacles include work, works, craftsmanship, apprentice, professionalism, recognition, advancement, and promotion.

When you look at the Three of Pentacles, do you see a master, or an apprentice?

Next week we will learn an important lesson about resource management with the Four of Pentacles.

Your One-Card Weekly Reading

Your one-card reading this week is the Fool! It’s time for an adventure, a new journey, or the beginning of something new.

It might be time to take a risk, or a leap of faith. You may need to make a decision about what comes next in your life.

The Fool also reminds us to be joyful, and to trust that the future will unfold as it should.

This week, honor your inner child. Make fun a priority, and be prepared to start a something new!

The Four Elements and the Major Arcana

The four elements of life are Earth, Air, Fire and Water. They each have metaphysical properties as well as physical properties.

The four elements correlate with the four suits of the Minor Arcana of the tarot. They also correlate with individual cards of the Major Arcana.

The term “Major Arcana” means “Greater Secrets.” The twenty-two cards of the Major Arcana contain the most spiritual messages and lessons of the tarot, and tell the story of our journey through life.

When we learn the elemental associations for each of the Major Arcana cards, we have a clear way to understand these important cards.

This 75 minute webinar will help the tarot student more fully understand the four elements. It will provide a deeper way to comprehend each of the Major Arcana cards. The student will be able to more fully interpret the Major Arcana cards, whether reading for self or others.

A New Year

There are so many wonderful traditions from around the world for celebrating the New Year. At the same time, there are those who remind us that the change of the calendar is arbitrary. Perhaps New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day don’t carry the power and meaning we give them.

I disagree. Even though the dates on our calendar don’t correlate our New Year with an astrological event, our New Year has power because we, the citizens of the planet, have agreed to give it power.

Think about it. Every nation of the planet rings in the New Year at midnight. We celebrate with resolutions, intentions, divinations, a kiss, and a song about friendship. That so many of us do this with the intention of creating a better year makes the New Year a very magickal time indeed.

What kind of magickal New Year celebration did you do? Is there more you want to do this month to help make 2015 your best year ever?

What kind of magickal New Year celebration did you do? Is there more you want to do this month to help make 2015 your best year ever?

Tarot Divination and Manifestation for the New Year

Have you done a tarot reading for your 2015? Have you tried a tarot manifestation? You can use many techniques. Here is a technique for both divination and manifestation in one sitting. Try it before the end of January.

Shuffle your deck, and, using any method to pick the cards, pick fourteen cards, and lay them out in this way.

The first card represents 2014. The next twelve cards represent each of the twelve months in order, starting with January. The final card represents 2015 overall.

Look at your cards and interpret them. What do they tell you about the coming year, and about the year you are leaving behind?

Now it is time to use these cards to manifest wonderful things for 2015.

Look first at the card for 2014 and the card for 2015. Do you like the energy of these cards? Do you want these energies in your life? If you do, take a moment to welcome these energies with gratitude.

If either these cards represent something you don’t like or don’t want, turn the card upside down to reverse the energy, and dismiss these energies from your life.

Now take all twelve of your month cards, and from them choose the energies that you would most like to cultivate. That could be all twelve, or only one or two. Take these cards that you have chosen and spend some time with them, in meditation, while focusing on your intentions for 2015.

In divination, the tarot will show you the energies that are available to you. In manifestation, you will expand the energies you find most helpful, and diminish the ones you don’t.

The Week in Review

On the Winter Solstice, the Tarot Blog Hop did an exciting exercise where twenty-four of us each performed the same spread. The synchronicities are amazing. You can read mine, and then follow the links to see what my fellow bloggers did.

On my Dark Forest blog, check out my counterintuitive advice for happiness, “Stop Trying to be a Good Person.”

On my Tarot Topics Personal Blog, we have some great guest posts. Joanne Matthew shared a wonderful piece of holiday tarot creativity called “22 Gifts.”

Linda, from Treasures of Tarot, shared a great way of using tarot for the New Year called “A New Take on the New Year’s Resolution.”

My contribution to the community blog was a video and written blog in my “Answers to your Questions about Tarot” series. This time the question was about comparing the Emperor and the Hierophant.

From Around the Web

This fabulous post from Tabitha Dial at Spiral Nature is crafty, tarot-centric and spiritual. Why don’t you try “Crafting a Tarot Wreath”?

Here’s Jean Redman’s take on the numerology of our New Year. I always appreciate Jean’s grounded wisdom.

Since we are talking a bit about numerology, here is a post from Katrina Wynne, another tarotist I admire. Read “Arithmology, Arithmancy, and Numerology in Tarot”.

Year Cards: From the Chariot to Strength

Did you know that, with numerology, we can determine a Major Arcana card to describe the energy for the year? We do that by adding together the digits of the year until we come to a single digit.

2014 is a Seven year, associated with the Chariot. 2015 is an Eight year, associate with Strength.

I see the Chariot as a card of personal mastery. I see Strength as a card that encourages people to work together and compromise. For me, the transition from Chariot to Strength may indicate an increase in our ability to plant seeds for peace and unity on the planet, in our communities and within ourselves this year.

Look at your Chariot, and your Strength card. Can you think of ways the Chariot made itself known in 2014? How do you think Strength will influence 2015?

What’s up on the Psychic Café?

Christiana’s Psychic Café began in December 2012, as a live weekly webcast on the Para Encounters Network. Although PEN is no longer broadcasting as it once did, the Psychic Café continues to bring you the best in informal and informative conversation with some very interesting people.

Our first new show of the New Year will debut on Facebook on Sunday, January 11 at 9 pm. Watch it then, or enjoy in on my YouTube channel.

I am very excited to announce that my first guest of the New Year is Benebell Wen, author of the brand new 874-page book, “Holistic Tarot.” Benebell will be joining me from her home in California to discuss her work with tarot and her ground-breaking first book.

I am very much looking forward to my conversation with Benebell Wen, and to many other great guests in 2015 on Christiana’s Psychic Café.

Learning Tarot: Ace of Pentacles

It is wonderful that, in our first newsletter of the New Year, we begin our journey through the suit of Pentacles.

The suit of Pentacles is also called the suit of disks, coins, or stones. We associate the element of Earth with the suit of Pentacles.  Earth rules our resources, our material goods and physical well-being. Therefore, the cards of the Pentacles suit will refer to our resources, our work, our homes, our health, our money.

As with all the Aces, the Ace of Pentacles can speak of a new beginning, an essence or a source.

Typically, the Ace of Pentacles can indicate new money, a new job or a change at work. It could also indicate a new sense of grounding, or a new commitment to health and well-being.

The Ace of Pentacles may remind you to pay attention to your daily tasks, or to find a greater connection to nature.

Sometimes, the Ace of Pentacles can predict a pregnancy!

Next week, we will continue our journey as we learn to balance our resources with the Two of Pentacles.

Your One-Card Weekly Reading

Your first one-card reading for the New Year is the Four of Wands. In Lisa Hunt’s Animals Divine Tarot, the Four of Wands is “Ladybug.”

The Four of Wands reminds you to enjoy your living space, and value it as sacred. Are you happy in your home? Is it time to redecorate, or invite friends over to enjoy your space with you?

This card can also be an indicator for romance. If you have a great partner, take time to enjoy each other this week. If you are looking for a great partner, this card is an auspicious sign of good things to come.

This week, remember that a wonderful home isn’t made from the finest bricks and stone. A wonderful home is made from love, passion, friendship and creativity.

So often, we spend so much time supporting our home that we forget to enjoy our home. This week, make your home, and the people in it, a priority!

Play

We often hear that “play is the work of children.” What we don’t hear often enough is how important play is for adults. When we are young, we learn through play. The same is true when we become older.

Taking time to be playful is also important to our physical and emotional well-being. This time of year offers many opportunities to step outside of our routine and do something silly or fun.

Make sure that, during this busy holiday time, you take time to play!

The Tarot Fool: Honoring the Inner Child

Numbered card 0, the tarot Fool, is the star of the story told by tarot. As such, the Fool is the card that represents each one of us on our journey through life. The Fool is often pictured at a crossroads, or about to walk off a cliff. Although he does not know what lies ahead, he proceeds forward unconcerned. His attitude is merry and carefree.

Often, when the Fool figures in a reading, he reminds us to be playful, and to honor our inner child. The Fool encourages us to take the leap of faith, even if we are unsure of the outcome.

Recently, someone said something to me that made me think of the Fool. She said that to experience joy, we must be fully present in the moment, rather than worrying about the past or the future.

We when adopt a playful attitude that honors our inner child, we are able to experience joy in the simple moments of our lives.

Often, the Fool is a tarot card that can help us do that.

From Conjure in the City, here is an interesting post about how to spot psychic scams and spellcaster frauds. Let me be clear that I do not necessarily believe or endorse every point in this post, but I believe it is an interesting perspective. I also believe that we do need to be aware of psychic fraud, and keep ourselves safe from those who try to take advantage.

Resources for Tarot Play

There are many games and activities you can enjoy with your tarot cards, even beyond the techniques of divination, meditation, manifestation and personal growth with which you are already familiar.

My book, “Tarot Tour Guide”, offers a number of interesting games and exercises to help you play with your cards.

There are many other great resources to help you think outside the box and have more fun with tarot.

The book, “Tarot Games” has been a go-to of mine for years. Written for the feminist community for use with the Motherpeace Round Tarot, many of these games translate well to groups large or small, with any type of tarot decks.

Here are two interesting books I haven’t read. Each offers unique ideas for tarot fun.

365 Tarot Activities” could be used in daily tarot study.

The Tarot Activity Book: A Collection of Creative and Therapeutic Ideas for the Cards” has a wealth of interesting tarot exercises.

The Tarot Game” is an actual board game played with tarot cards!

The King of Swords is the highest expression of the Air energy in the Minor Arcana.

The King of Swords can also be a trustworthy man, or a gentleman with honorable intentions.

The King of Swords can also be a good communicator or an authority on ethics, integrity, technology, science or communication, of any gender.

Your One-Card Weekly Reading

Your One-Card Weekly Reading is the Sun.

Appropriate as we approach the Winter Solstice, the card I draw for us this week is Major Arcana 19, the Sun.

The Sun is a card of brilliance and happiness, and reminds you to seek joy during this holiday season.

The Sun also commands you to use your skills and abilities for the betterment of the world. Do not let anyone steal your peace, or your power. Do not let anyone, or anything, cast a shadow on your inner light.

In mundane things and spiritual things this week, find what makes you happy, and share your happiness with others.

Gifts

So many cultures’ winter holidays include a tradition of gift giving. For many people, the giving and receiving of presents becomes the singular focus of the season, and a source of stress. I think we can keep the holidays holy and still enjoy the tradition of giving gifts, as long as we give from our hearts and within our means.

Sometimes the gifts we give aren’t things that come from stores. Sometimes we can use our own gifts and talents to create something meaningful for the people we love.

Sometimes, the greatest gift we can give to someone is our time. Sometimes, our presence in someone’s life is the best present we could give.

Five Cards We See During the Holidays

Many people have similar experiences and expectations of the holidays, and not all of them are pleasant. When we perform readings for others or ourselves during the holiday season, we may see some holiday themes reflected in the cards. Here are five tarot cards that can have particular meaning during the holiday season.

Six of Cups: This card can speak of reunions, old friends, nostalgia and a return to one’s childhood home. This can be a very pleasant card, but can also indicate an unhealthy longing for the holiday times of the past, or a disappointment that traditions and families have changed so much. This can also indicate the revisiting of painful family dynamics.

Three of Cups: We often call this “The Party Card,” and there are plenty of parties to attend this time of year. This card can predict fun times and social interaction, but it can warn against over-indulgence.

Hierophant: This card can speak to the religious traditions of the season, as well as family expectations and family traditions. Often families have difficulty during the holiday season because of different family members’ expectations regarding the keeping of traditions.

Ten of Pentacles: This is another card of family tradition, and suggests the opportunity for generations to gather. This card can speak of enjoying ones’ home. During the holidays, this card might refer to entertaining in ones’ home or the joys and woes of decorating ones’ home.

Six of Pentacles: Anytime you see this card, it can refer to charity. At this time of year, our thoughts often turn to helping those less fortunate. This card can also refer to the process of gift shopping or exchanging gifts. It can also talk about the anxiety inherent in gift giving.

When you see these cards appear in your readings over the course of the season, be aware of the possibility that they may be referring to the holiday season.

The Week in Review

This week on my Dark Forest Blog I wrote about my new favorite sport; riding my tricycle!

On my Tarot Topics Community Blog I wrote about a surprising aspect of my career. I am often asked to speak about tarot in unlikely places. I’ve learned to cultivate this, and for a good reason. Read “Be an Ambassador for Tarot.”

On my personal blog, Tarot Trends, I wrote about the second meeting of the Tampa Bay Area Tarot Meetup, and something important I learned there.

From Around the Web

I really enjoyed this post from Jenna Matlin at Queen of Wands Tarot. She explains her unique process of working with a Celtic Cross Spread. I think you will find this fascinating.

Do you think tarot and yoga go together? Here is someone who is working on a yoga sequence inspired by the Major Arcana! See what you think about “Taroyoga.”

From Lisa Boswell, here are her ideas of ways to use tarot to answer “yes or no” questions.

Creative Tarot Gift Giving Exercise

Every holiday season I share some ideas about how we can use tarot to help in our holiday gift giving. Of course, you can simply think of a person you need a gift for and pull a card or two. Interpret the cards in a way that points you to a unique, thoughtful and appropriate gift. This is a simple and practical way to utilize tarot during the holidays.

Here is another, more complex tarot gift-giving exercise.

We all have our own special gifts and talents. It is nice when the gift we give someone comes from our own hand and heart; something we can make or a service we can provide.

If you would like some great ideas for gifts that you could make or do yourself, simply think of an intended recipient. Then, ask this question. “What gift or talent do I have that I could share with this person?” Pull a card, or a few cards, at random. Let the cards inspire you to create the perfect gifts!

Learning Tarot: Queen of Swords

The Queen of Swords has a bit of a bad reputation. Older tarot books will tell you “don’t trust this woman.” In traditional tarot, the Queen of Swords often represented a childless woman, an unmarried woman, a widow, or a bitter, sharp-tongued woman.

This is an example of the misogynistic roots of tarot. The Queen of Swords is the Queen of Air. Air is the element of intelligence, truth and communication. Today we understand the Queen of Swords as a woman who speaks the truth.  A few hundred years ago, people did not always appreciate an intelligent woman offering her opinion!

The Queen of Swords in a reading may refer to a woman who has borne some pain, or a woman who is not afraid to speak an unpleasant truth or to do the right thing in a difficult situation.

The Queen of Swords may appear in a reading to remind you to speak your truth, to follow your conscience or to make a rational choice.

The Queen of Swords may also refer to a woman born under an Air sun sign, that is, Gemini, Libra, or Aquarius.

Next week we will meet the final character in the Swords Court, the King of Swords.
